1 THE PARISH NEWSLETTER CREATED BY ST. BONAVENTURE PARISHIONERS FOR THE COMMUNITY June-July 2013 Volume 1 Issue 4 PASTOR S UPDATE At this writing, a date for the beginning of construction of the gathering and youth area of the church building has not been set. There have been some glitches in the process, but it looks like they have all been worked out. I guess that is not so unusual when it comes to construction. With that in mind, it seems like we will begin around the first week of June, and construction will continue until about the time of Thanksgiving. The architects have told us that we will be able to use the church on all of our weekends and I am happy about that. During the week we will have daily Mass in Ambrose Hall like we did when the church roof was being replaced. We may need to use the neighboring churches of Assumption or Nativity for funerals during this time, but that will require further conversation and planning. As you know, one primary objective of this construction is to build a much larger gathering space than we now have. When our church was built in 1967, the post-vatican church had not yet developed our present practice of fellowship and communal gathering. This new space will help us to focus on how we can become a more welcoming and hospitable community. Building the kingdom of God in our corner of the world is at the very heart of our mission and reason for existence. To that end, in early May, 17 people from our parish went to a hospitality workshop sponsored by the Archdiocese to help us reflect on the quality of hospitality in our parish and how we could continue to grow in this area. We saw that there were many things we do fairly well and other areas that need some attention and development. Examples of both abound. Some of the things we do well include: social gatherings that are meaningful and effective; communicate parish events in a welcoming/positive way; provide liturgical aids; greet everyone at Mass; visit parishioners who are homebound; provide facilities and grounds that are handicap accessible; invite parishioners of other cultures to positions of leadership; offer a new parishioner welcome event. Things we could do better are: call people by name; intentionally get to know new parishioners; seek to sit by people you don t know or have them sit by you; provide child care/ nursery for parents of small children; personally invite parishioner involvement via phone calls and personal visits; mingle with parishioners who are not like oneself; learn about the cultures of parishioners from other countries. As you can see, hospitality is not a narrow but a wide-ranging area of parish life that involves the life of the entire parish and the way people experience the vibrancy of the community. It is also the responsibility of each parish member to do his/her part to build the community into a warmer and more welcoming environment. We can get comfortable with who we are and who we know and the way we do things. Personally, I like comfort. If comfort, however, plays too much of a role in our lives, we soon get stagnant and in a rut, and it does little to build our community and advance the kingdom of God, and building the kingdom of God in our corner of the world is at the very heart of our mission and reason for existence. I look forward to the new space we are building because it will provide us with the resources to do so much more with hospitality and fellowship (as well as providing an area for our youth). I also look forward to the way we continue to grow as a parish. It is not something that happens overnight or by accident. We are being intentional about it with our parish staff and leadership, and we will continue to engage the entire parish in this endeavor as the future unfolds. Fr. Volunteers are always welcome and needed. Please contact Joan at if you are able to help. Our patron, St. Bonaventure, is called the Seraphic Doctor of the Church. St. Bonaventure is known for his leadership of the Franciscans and his great intellectual contributions to theology and philosophy. St. Bonaventure was born in Bagnoregio in Tuscany, Italy, in Sources recount that in his youth, St. Bonaventure was cured of a dangerous illness by the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi. He entered the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor in After making his vows, he was sent to complete his studies in Paris. He was taught first by Alexander of Hales, an English doctor and Franciscan, and later by John of Rochelle. While in Paris, he became good friends with St. Thomas Aquinas, with whom he received the degree of Doctor. He also developed a friendship with St. Louis, King of France. In 1257, St. Bonaventure was chosen to serve as the superior of the Friars Minor. In this position, which he filled for 17 years, he brought peace to the order. His impact was so great that today he is sometimes referred to as the second founder of the Franciscans. Taking on the leadership position after a period of extraordinary expansion for the order, St. Bonaventure worked to preserve a spirit of unity. He calmed the threat of internal dissension that arose over differences in interpreting the message of St. Francis of Assisi. Central to this work was his understanding that the study of philosophy and theology did not oppose the call to poverty that was so central to Franciscan spirituality. He is sometimes referred to as the second founder of the Franciscans Wishing to present an authentic image of the life and teaching of their founder, he zealously collected documents about St. Francis of Assisi and heard testimonies of those who had actually known him. From this information, he compiled a biography of the saint that was adopted as his official biography by the General Chapter of the Friars Minor in In 1273, he was appointed by Pope Gregory X as Cardinal and Bishop of Albano. The Pope also asked him to help prepare the Second Ecumenical Council of Lyons, an ecclesial event aimed at re-establishing communion between the Latin and Greek Churches. St. Bonaventure worked to prepare the Ecumenical Council, but never saw its completion. He died on July 15, 1274, while the council was still in session. He was canonized in 1482 by Pope Sixtus IV. In his General Audience on March 3, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the life of St. Bonaventure. He called to mind the great works of literature, art, philosophy and theology that were inspired by the Christian faith during the time period in which the saint lived. Among the great Christian figures who contributed to the composition of this harmony between faith and culture, Bonaventure stands out, a man of action and contemplation, of profound piety and prudent government, Pope Benedict said. The Pope called on the faithful to take note of the central role that Christ always played in Bonaventure's life and teaching, and to imitate the way in which the whole of his thinking was profoundly Christocentric. Would you like to know more about St. Bonaventure and other Franciscan Saints? Visit us, The Secular Franciscan Order, as we meet monthly to explore the spirituality of the Franciscans and learn to live a way of life following Jesus in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi. As an established Order in the Church, we are men and women, married and single, age 18 and over, who meet to learn, grow and serve one another and all of creation. We meet on the second Sunday of each month in the Activity Bldg., Room 4, from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

3 3 Communications Update Have you visited the new St. Bonaventure web site recently? Updates have been made to the site to make it easier for you to access information about upcoming events, to register for those events, or to hear past homilies. Father Richard s weekly homily is uploaded onto YouTube and made available for you on Sunday. So if you are sick, out of town, or simply want to listen to Father s homily again at your leisure, you can replay his message each week. There is also a link to review the readings, psalm, and Gospel of the day. From select Communications from the left menu, then choose Homilies, video or audio. Or go directly to YouTube and search for FrRichardKaley. Once on his YouTube channel, you can click the Subscribe button just after Fr. Richard s name. Then each week you will receive a link to access each new homily once it is posted. This new evangelization initiative will help you better understand the gospel message each week and be better prepared to share your thoughts and reflections with others. Welcome New Parishioners! It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made summer and winter. (Psalm 74: 15-17) Though the lakes are a little slow to open this year, the brooks and streams have begun to flow and new life is bursting forth all around us! Spring is here and we are grateful! It seems whenever we anticipate the arrival of something wonderful like spring and summer (which required a little extra patience this year) we are especially happy to embrace it! As we approach this season of warmth and sunshine, more of your time might be spent at the pool/lake, family picnics, the ball park, other outdoor attractions, or on vacation. The American Heart Association has some helpful tips for a safe and heart healthy summer: Hydrate-It is important to drink plenty of fluids (especially water) before, during, and after activity when temperatures and humidity are high. For low-cal flavor, add slices of your favorite citrus fruit/melon/cucumber/mint to a pitcher of cold water. Protect your skin from the sun with wide brimmed hats and sunscreen with SPF of at least 15. If spending time in the water, a higher SPF is recommended with reapplication every 2 hours. Avoid strenuous activity when temps are high, especially during the hours of 12-3 when the sun is strongest. This is very important for the elderly and the very young as well as those with compromised health. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses. This is an area which is gaining increased medical attention as some diseases of the eyes are being linked to excessive sun exposure. Give your diet a berry boost. Blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries are rich in antioxidants and fiber. Fruits and vegetables are more plentiful in summer and make excellent snacks and smoothies. Look for farmers markets in your area. Gardening is "grounding" and decreases stress and the same can be true of yoga and many other outdoor activities. Take time to vacation and relax with family and friends as well as time for quiet moments with your heavenly Father. Sleep. Strive to obtain 7-8 hours of deep rest each night. Wishing you a very blessed summer! Becky Running, Parish Nurse

5 5 Stewardship - A Way of Life We are in the process of forming a Stewardship Committee here at St. Bonaventure and are looking for additional members. On Saturday, April 20 Father Richard, Deacon Jon, Ben Krippner and I attended the annual Archdiocesan Stewardship conference. The morning began with Mass followed by a presentation by Fr. Darrin Gurr from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Fr. Gurr s vision of stewardship focused on three areas: 1. Gratitude Stewardship begins by realizing that everything we have comes from God. Every breath we take is in fact a gift from God. Our day should begin with gratitude to God. We go to Mass not to get something out of it but to put something in. What we are putting in is our gratitude to God. We have an inner desire to express gratitude. 2. Generosity God made us generous because God is generous. Our goal in life is to be just like God; therefore we will be happy when we are generous as God is generous. Instead of Give until it hurts it should be changed to give until it feels good, according to Fr. Gurr. Stewardship does not have to do with the needs of others, it has to do with the needs inside of us to be like God, who is generous. In general, people give because they have an inner desire to be generous which must be fulfilled. 3. Living in the Present Too often we live in the past, or look forward to the future, instead of celebrating the present. Acknowledging that God is present in everyone and everything is the beginning of a joy filled day. At the conclusion of the workshop, all participants received a copy of The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic by Matthew Kelly. This book is available in our parish library. The four signs of a Dynamic Catholic are: Prayer, Study, Generosity and Evangelization. Through his research, Kelly found that 7% of Catholics are significantly more engaged in these areas than the other 93% of Catholics. The book explores the traits of the 7%. Prayer is just like generosity in that we are happiest when we pray. We are being who God wants us to be! God is calling us continually, on a daily basis, to enter into prayer with Him. Each day we choose whether or not we are going to be wise stewards and spend time in prayer. Kelly shares the difference between Dynamic Catholics and everyone else is that Dynamic Catholics have a routine when they sit down to pray. Kelly s book offers a guide to provide structure to our prayer time. Beginning the day in prayer, and eagerly responding to God s call will change our life, St. Bonaventure parish and the entire world. If you are interested in learning more about what it means to be a steward or if you would like to share how being a steward has changed your life, please contact me: Mickey Redfearn, ext. 14 or mickeyr@saintbonaventure.org. CLASSROOMS REMODELED On December 3, 2012, the work began to remodel the classrooms in the Activity Building. The project is expected to be completed very soon. Here are the highlights of the extensive work that has been completed: 1. Painted all eight classrooms and closets floor to ceiling. 2. Sanded, stained, varnished and applied poly to all chalkboard woodwork. 3. Removed some chalkboards from walls and installed cork boards. 4. New crucifixes, holy water fonts & clocks installed in each classroom. 5. Installed new bulletin boards after staining and applying poly. 6. Repaired and caulked all cracks/broken blocks. 7. Removed stain & varnish from various woodwork. 8. Repaired and replaced all broken hooks in the hallway. 9. Repaired broken benches. All this work was generously completed by various Building and Grounds volunteer workers, along with others. We would like to gratefully THANK these volunteers and may God s Blessings be with them! 6 6 Dear St. Bonaventure Family, Farewell from Rachel I have some bittersweet news. In early June, I will be moving to New York and entering into a new and developing chapter of my life. I am filled with joy and excitement to receive all that God has in mind for me. However, I have come to love my ministry here at St. Bonaventure, and so it is with a sense of sadness that I share this news with all of you. From the bottom of my heart, I can say that this parish is more to me than a workplace. When I was offered the job in early October of 2011, I felt an overwhelming sense of God s providence at work. I truly have come to feel at home here, and so I will forever give thanks to God for St. Bonaventure Catholic Community and the blessing it has been for me in my own walk with Jesus. As I offer up to the Lord the vision which has been established, the seeds which have been planted, and the work that has been started, I trust that He who has begun a good work will carry it on until completion (Philippians 1:6). Thank you, all of you, who have welcomed me to this community with open arms. Although I may be considered to be the one sent to you, it was all of you whom Jesus really sent to minister to me. I will cherish you in my heart forever. In the words of St. Thomas More, Pray for me as I will for thee that we may merrily meet in Heaven. May St. Bonaventure, St. Francis, and all of the Franciscan saints intercede for us as we continue onward in the power of Christ crucified. In the pierced hearts of Jesus and Mary, Rachel Olson \ A special blessing for high school seniors will be held on Sunday, June 2 nd at the 10:00 a.m. Mass A cake reception will occur after Mass. Seniors, please wear your graduation gown and meet in the Marian Area at 9:45 a.m. If you have questions contact triciak@saintbonaventure.org or OUR CATHOLIC TEACHINGS Have you memorized the new translation of the Nicene Creed yet? One of the recommended goals during this Year of Faith is for each of us to memorize the new words in the Nicene Creed, which is said every weekend during Mass. It is not a new prayer, but rather a more accurate translation of what we have said for many years. For example, we now begin with I believe rather than We believe because the first-person singular is the correct translation of the Latin word Credo. This new translation not only matches what other languages were already praying, but it also allows us to make a personal statement of belief, just like we do when we renew our Baptismal promises by responding I do. If you want to know more about the translation, our St. Bonaventure website has a link to the Archdiocese. Search Nicene Creed and you will find a more detailed explanation. BEFRIENDER MINISTRY NEW! TO ST. BONAVENTURE The BeFriender National Office describes this ministry as "a listening ministry of care. Based on a model of faith and mutuality, this ministry seeks to heal hearts, energize communities, and to transform a suffering world primarily through listening and presence." I recently had the wonderful opportunity to attend a week long BeFriender Facilitator training workshop at the St. Paul Cathedral. I learned a lot and met many wonderful people, some of whom already have active BeFriender ministries in their church. They shared beautiful stories of how this ministry is touching lives for God in beautiful ways! We hope to begin training our present "We Care" ministers and our new volunteers to this ministry in the upcoming months. If you feel called to share your listening presence with those in our parish who are homebound or if you would like to know more about his important ministry, please call Becky Running, Parish Nurse at (952) or beckyr@saintbonaveture.org

7 7 Deacon Jack Weiland: I have been a deacon of the archdiocese for the past sixteen plus years. I was assigned by the Archbishop to St. Bonaventure in June of 2012, and I couldn't have been more warmly welcomed. I really love being at St. Bonaventure and serving as one of your deacons. My responsibilities thus far are serving as deacon of the weekend masses and then the Word and Communion service the following Monday, which I share with Deacon Jon DeLuney. My primary responsibility away from the altar is planning, guiding and teaching in the RCIA program which we do in partnership with Nativity of Mary. Just recently my wife, Judy, and I are scheduled to be a mentor couple for those planning marriage at our parish. My other ministry outside the parish is bringing Communion to the MN Veteran's Home residence once a month, visiting those who request it, and doing one or more Word and Communion liturgies monthly. Deacon Jon DeLuney: I have been assigned at St. Bonaventure as a permanent deacon since my ordination in 1999 at the Cathedral in St. Paul. My main duties are to serve at weekend Masses and Monday Communion services. Joan and I lead baptism classes and I have the privilege of baptizing children. I preside at weddings, wake, funeral and graveside services when assigned. We lead Martin Luther Care Center Communion Services once a month and Joan coordinates the nursing home ministry teams. I am also a field advocate for parishioners who are seeking an annulment and I visit the homebound. YOUR PARISH RECORDS While reviewing our Parish database, I discovered a great many young adults are still listed as dependents of their parents. Those who will be 23 years of age or older after July 1 (which is the beginning of our parish fiscal year) are requested to register as an adult in the parish, if you have not already done so. This will enable us to get a more accurate account of the parish census by age categories. I also discovered that there are some families who have had their children baptized at another parish (for a variety of reasons) and have not notified our parish of these additions to their families. Parish Secretary Following through on the goals of the Parish Strategic Plan created in January of 2011, top priority was given to Family and Youth Ministries. A Young Adult Core Team has been formed and events planned. The need to identify who the young adults are in our parish is the next phase. Joan DeLuney If you feel you or your family members fall into either of these categories please contact me either by joand@saintbonaventure.org or phone on Tues, Wed or Thurs to update your information on our parish family database. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions concerning either of these matters. POINT OF VIEW By Peggy Peterson CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION WALK TODAY WITH JESUS, EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
