Luke 1:54-55 Dear children of God, brothers and sisters in Christ, and guests, two more days, and it will be Christmas. Today is the last Sunday of Advent. Our reflection on expectation is almost over. And, as one approaches the end of something, there s always a glance back over what has been. How has the anticipation of the coming of the Christ been? What does the past say about the present and the future? This morning we pay attention to the closing verses of the Song of Mary. In those closing words Mary does just that: look back to the past to understand the present and the future. As the mother-to-be of our Lord and Saviour stood on the threshold of a new era, she sings of the greatness and goodness of God. Sings, for the greatness and goodness of God is worth a song. God has not abandoned His people, He has come true on His promise. And thus we will be encouraged as we look forward to the coming of our Lord and Saviour, to the Return of Jesus Christ on the clouds of heaven. We don t know how close we are. But the past does give us certainty in the present and for the future. We listen to the Good News of Salvation this morning with this theme: The LORD be praised for His covenant faithfulness. We ll consider three things: (1) Mary sang with historical awareness; (2) Mary sang with Bible knowledge; and (3) Mary sang with great amazement. (1) Mary sang with historical awareness. We ve read together what happened prior to the moment when Mary sang her song. The angel Gabriel had been to see Mary. He brought her the good news of a very special pregnancy. Greetings, you who are highly favoured. Highly favoured, Mary was highly favoured. She was someone who would receive special grace from God. She s someone important. Mary didn t get it and so Gabriel explained it to her. And then note the reaction of Mary. Most would swell up with pride if they were told what Mary was told. Not Mary. Gabriel might have called her highly favoured, her response is I am the Lord s servant. Now Mary was not an unemotional, rationalizing human being. On the contrary, if one takes into consideration all the snippets of information we can glean from the Gospels, we see a woman who is emotionally involved with her surroundings. The appearance of an angel is already intense. Being told that you re going to be pregnant, that s even more intense. Certainly for a young girl, scholars assume Mary would have been in her mid- to late teens. Being told that you re pregnant without the involvement of a man, that s mind-blowing. Being told that you re to carry and give birth to the promised Redeemer, the Messiah of God s people, that s, that s even more than mind blowing. What to do? Gabriel had given a hint, by telling Mary that her relative Elizabeth was pregnant too. That too was remarkable, for Elizabeth was generally considered too old to have a child. Being relatives we don t know how Mary knew, she d be able to talk with Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah. Zechariah, he might be of help to Mary too. After all, Zechariah was a priest. Like what a minister is today. Mary went from Nazareth to the village where Zechariah and Elizabeth lived. When she arrived, Mary again discovered how special she was. Elizabeth greets her in a marvelous manner: Blessed are you among women. Once again Mary is placed on pedestal. Once again she was praised. And once again Mary reacts with humility. Her song expresses that humility. She was thankful to God for what He has begun to do. The verses express Mary s amazement at how God has chosen her, a poor girl from Nazareth, to be the mother of the Saviour of the world, the mother of the Son of God. One would expect God to have chosen someone important for this. But no, God used weakness and poverty to reveal His strength and greatness. Mary is truly thankful for what is happening to her.

But Mary s song travels beyond her personal blessings. Mary is not just singing of her own good fortune. She does so in the context of God and His Plan of Salvation. The opening line of the song makes that clear. My soul glorifies the Lord. It s about God, not about Mary. And that s why her song broadens the horizon of the special pregnancy to the great and mighty doings of God. Mary draws a direct line from the tiny little individual inside of her to the history of God and His people, indeed, to world history. What s happening to Mary is part of the covenant of Redemption. It`s not about her, but about God, about God and His people. God has remembered His people Israel. He is true to His Word. It took a long time. A very long time. There had been centuries without a prophet: God had fallen silent. Israel had begun to back slide again. The work of Ezra and Nehemiah right after the exile had petrified. The religion of Israel, the worship of the one true God, had turned into habits, into customs. Hearts had turned to stone. Faith had become tradition and love had cooled. Would God forget His people just as His people had begun to forget Him? No! sings Mary. God has remembered to be merciful. In the past the people of Israel had often experienced trials and difficulties. And each time again, God would remember His mercy. Israel in Egypt, crying with pain during slavery. God set Israel free. In the desert Israel ran the danger of deserting God, but God had given Moses and Aaron to lead the people. Israel had been afraid to conquer the Promised Land and God had given Joshua. For over 3 centuries Israel bounced between idolatry and faithfulness to God, and each time God granted judges. Then came the kings. Good, wise, and godly kings, such as David, Solomon, Asa, and Hezekiah. But there had also been weak and evil kings. Eventually Israel had gone into Exile. But God had given a Daniel to protect His people, a Zerubbabel and Joshua to bring them back, an Ezra and Nehemiah. Each time again God had remembered His mercy, had been kind to Israel, had saved her. Why? To come to the moment described in our text. The moment referred to elsewhere in Scripture as the time fully come (Galatians 4:4). For Israel was God s servant. Israel had a task to accomplish in God s world. It was to be the people that would bring forth the Messiah, the Saviour of the world. The existence of Israel as God s special people had been the child that had begun growing inside of Mary. As Paul puts it in Galatians: When the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. (Galatians 4:4-5). God had helped His servant Israel to do what God had decided Israel should do. This, brothers and sisters, is Mary s historical awareness. She understands she is a link in the execution of God s plan. An important link, she is highly favoured and blessed among women. But she knows herself a maid-servant, all glory belongs to God. All through history God has been working towards this moment. The hugest thing in the history of mankind is about to happen. And Mary is personally, indeed, bodily involved in this. I doubt whether we, humans, would have chosen this moment in history and this method if we had designed and executed the Plan of Salvation. Would Israel be up to the task of bringing forth and raising the Messiah in a time of Roman oppression and religious unfaithfulness? Would we have chosen an insignificant girl from a tiny rural village in the dark north of the country? We wouldn t have. We would work out a strategy that would maximize the chance of success. But God takes the opposite approach, choosing what is weak, what is nothing in the world. And Mary knows, this is how God always works. The old and childless Abram and Sarah mark the start of God s work with Israel. Gideon had to save Israel with just 300 men. David was the forgotten son of Jesse, a mere shepherd s lad. God chose Mary, rather than someone important. God chose a time of Roman occupation to show His power. That s how God is. Rulers are brought low, the humble are raised. The hungry are fed, the rich are sent away empty. God has helped His servant Israel, sings Mary. Later the apostle Paul would point out: The foolishness of God is wiser than man s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man s strength. (1Cor 1:25). God s plan is amazing, God s actions always surprise.

It s important for us to have that same historical awareness which Mary had. We live in a time of individualization. That s not only true for us as individual persons. It s also true for our era as a whole. History is not a popular subject. We re much more interested in our present and our future than in our past. But if you don t know the past, you have little idea of who God is and how He acts. Know the history of mankind and see the hand of God in that history. Observe how involved God is, how He is true to His Word. He doesn t really need man to accomplish His purposes. But He is pleased to involve humans. Even if it be against the order of creation, even if it means the Saviour of the world was born from a virgin. Mary realized this full well: I might be considered blessed, but I m just the Lord s servant. My soul makes great the Name of the Lord. Boys and girls, remember someone else like this? Someone who was also blessed and important, and yet, in the presence of God, was no more than a servant? Remember King David as he sat before the Lord, after God had told him he was not to build God a house, but that God would build him a house? In her attitude, Mary is a true daughter of David. Mary sang with historical awareness. She knew how God acts, and how she is to be part of the execution of God s plan. She knew, because she knew her Bible. Her faith was not based on reconstructions combined with her imagination, the way many documentaries on television are. Her faith was based on the record of what God had said and done in the past. Mary sang with Bible knowledge. 2) That s the second point for this sermon. Mary sang with Bible knowledge. My NIV Study Bible has the practice of noting, underneath the heading for a passage, any parallel passages in Scripture. In the Gospels there s lots of that, for Matthew, Mark, and Luke (and often also John) will write about the same events. But the Song of Mary is only recorded in Luke. Yet, there s a parallel passage noted here. Luke 1:46-53 is more or less parallel to 1 Samuel 2:1-10. That s the Song of Hannah, the mother of Samuel. Rev. Roukema preached on that text back in November. Mary obviously saw a parallel between herself and Hannah, the childless mother who cried bitter tears, not just on account of her childlessness, but on account of the apostate situation of the people of Israel. Hannah promised God she would dedicate her child to His service so that the light of God s Word might shine again in Israel. And indeed, through Samuel, a revival of Israel indeed took place. Mary realized her own Son would serve a similar purpose, implying that she would fulfil a role not unlike that of Hannah. But Mary s song is not a repeat of Hannah s song. It contains many, many more allusions to Scripture, to historical narratives, to psalms, and especially to prophecies. Indeed, this song is so jam-packed with Scripture quotations that some Bible scholars dare to doubt whether Mary, a girl in her mid to late teens, would indeed have composed this song. We limit our attention to just our text, which, by the way, is additional to the song of Hannah. Verse 54 is an echo of Psalm 98:3. Psalm 98, we paid attention to its opening verses the last time we celebrated the Lord s Supper. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done marvelous things. It s obvious why Mary felt okay about composing a new song to the LORD. The LORD had indeed begun to do a marvelous thing inside of her! This was worthy of a new song. And so Mary sang. She sang, repeating what Psalm 98 noted: He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel. Mary leaves off there. The Psalm continues, all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. When Mary sang, things weren t that far yet. But that too would be coming.

What exactly would Mary have thought the Messiah to be born from her would do? Would Mary have understood the full implications of His work? The angel had spoken to Mary of the throne of David. She d been told to call her son Jesus. Joseph would be told that this name was to be given as Jesus would save His people from their sins. How would Mary have understood the work of her Son? Verse 54 tells us not to think too simply of Mary s convictions. Hear her sing: To Abraham and his descendants forever, even as He said to our fathers. Mary thinks back to Genesis 12: All peoples on earth will be blessed through you. God remembering to be merciful, helping Israel, there s an echo here of Exodus 2:24-25: God heard their groaning and He remembers His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them. Mary understood that what was about to happen was similar to the exodus of Israel from Egypt; indeed, of every liberation of Israel that happened in history. Redemptions that took place with a view to the coming redemption by that very special Messiah of God. And Mary understood that the baby she was carrying would not be just a redeemer in a long line of redeemers, but would be THE Redeemer, indeed, the seed of the woman that would crush the serpent s head. How do we know? Well, first of all, note the words of the angel. There s the fact of the virgin birth, the fact of the divinity of the child she would bear. Then there are the words of Elizabeth, when Mary arrived: Why am I so favoured that the mother of my Lord should come to me? No doubt Zechariah and Elizabeth had done lots of Bible study since the angel had spoken to Zechariah, so that they would understand who their child was to be. They would have shared that with Mary, and understood how what was happening to Mary fit into the bigger picture. Mary s faith is exemplary. She was convinced of God s goodness and she knew God well. She would indeed be a good mother for the Saviour. She understood the importance of knowing Salvation History. Of knowing it the way God had it recorded in Scripture. Indeed, she understood it so well, she kept a record of all these things so that, when in the future a man named Luke would speak with her, her own experiences, including her song, could be recorded for future generations. Knowing what God has done in the past gives certainty with respect to the future. Without the Old Testament one cannot understand the New. Without the Bible one cannot understand life today. And there would be no certainty with respect to the future of the fullness of God s Kingdom. Mary sang with conviction, using phrases of Scripture to articulate her faith. We ll do the same today. We sing the Psalms of the Old Testament. We sing them with more depth than Old Testament Israel ever could. For the salvation of which Israel sang has begun to become a reality in our world. The Word of God is spreading around the globe, there are churches everywhere. And we are part of the plan of God s expanding kingdom. And so we also sing hymns, new songs as Psalm 98 says, a new song the way Mary did. Hymns that draw on Scripture and articulate our place in the big picture. Hymns that bring our amazement to expression and have us glorify God. 3) Amazement. Mary sang with great amazement. Let s take note of that in the third place. Mary s song begins with the words: My soul glorifies the Lord. It s commonly referred to by its first word in Latin: magnificat, hence we have the word magnify in our rhymed version. This line brings to expression the amazement Mary had over all that was happening. Elizabeth called Mary blessed among women. Mary indeed agreed that she is blessed among women (Luke 1:48b). But it s not thanks to her. It is entirely the Lord s doing. All attention should be focused on God, on what He is doing, on the child Mary is to give birth to. Not on Mary. Herein speaks the faith of Mary. It s not a self-centred faith. Often faith can take on that form. Faith can be about what we would like to have, what we expect to get. But no, brothers and sisters, true faith is about self-

denial. It is about placing yourself in service of God. Like king David, who wanted to build God a house, wasn t allowed to, and then, in the prayer he prays, doesn t even mention the temple anymore. Self-denial is a mark of the true believer. And clearly Mary practiced such self-denial. When the angel had spoken with her: I am the Lord s servant. May it be to me as you have said. Boys and girls, it would have been very easy for Mary to become proud. Both she and Elizabeth were expecting a child. But Elizabeth s child would be the herald of Mary s child. Mary s child would be more important. Mary could have looked down on Elizabeth. Elizabeth herself said as much: Why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? But no, that s not how Mary is at all. Mary knew she was not worthy of God`s favour. She is totally amazed at what God has begun to do with her, for Israel, indeed, for the world. Beloved, we too should stand in awe of God, be filled with a sense of great amazement. Look at what God has done for mankind. Look at it, knowing full well what mankind has done to God, does to fellow human beings, does to God`s creation. It s mind blowing. First of all, the fact that God is still prepared to save us. Secondly, the way in which God does. He has the Christ born into Israel when Israel is at a low-point in its history. When the house of David is little more than a distant memory of glory. The Son of God is caused to grow as a human being in one of the most insignificant of Israelites. And in a manner that is beyond the course of nature: the virgin has conceived and will give birth to a son. Be filled with amazement, as we celebrate Christmas this coming week. Be filled with amazement at the thought that the church, also our congregation, is a continuation of God s mighty work. And that the future of a perfected Kingdom, a dwelling the presence of God, yet awaits us. Indeed, the LORD be praised for His covenant faithfulness. These past Sundays of Advent we ve seen how the expectation of God s Salvation was experienced in the past. How God set out with Abram when mankind had all but forgotten God again. How God gave rich promises to Abram, right in the middle of the devil s playground. We saw how Abram believed. We saw how God accelerated His plan of Salvation with David. The family of David would be a royal house that would last forever. David would be a forefather to the Messiah. In the days of Isaiah things were looking bad. King Ahaz was making a mess of things. God foretold of coming judgment. And yet there was also the comfort of the promise of a Miracle Child who would sit on David s throne forever. And this morning we saw: the promise had begun to be fulfilled. The Child to be born was no longer just a promise, it had begun growing inside Mary of Nazareth. God had begun doing what He had promised to the forefathers, to Abram, to David, to Ahaz. We know the Christ was born, what He did, and what He does today. He is indeed seated on the throne of David this very day. His Kingdom is expanding in this world. And we look forward to His coming, to establish a Kingdom of everlasting peace in which all will be good. The LORD has been faithful to His promise. And He will be faithful. Be convinced of that, my brothers and sisters. Live in faith, expecting Your Saviour. And as you await Him, praise the LORD for His faithfulness. Amen.
