2 Who will Trump the Donald? As I write it looks quite likely that Donald Trump will win the Republican nomination for the US presidential election. This: despite his public quarrels with the Islamic world, and now Pope Francis, and his plans to build a wall to keep Mexicans out, among many other issues. He appears to be so popular that these bizarre spats seem only to enhance his notoriety. It is said in the news media that some lifelong republican voters are preparing themselves to vote Democrat in the Presidential election if Trump gets the nomination just to keep him out of power. As we know a week is a long time in politics so he may well be well out of contention by the time this edition of Leybourne voice goes to press, but I think this situation does raise a very important issue. The sound bite culture we inhabit, along with our cousins across the water, is very susceptible to careful manipulation. More than ever our politicians need, above all, to be constantly active on social media in order to get noticed and be followed. We also seem to be less concerned about long term political strategy than short term news and the result can be this: a man who has no political experience and who has consistently failed in business could feasibly be the most powerful person in the free world. It is ironic that Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, president of the United States, wrote these words, published in 1960: Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect. It is a very frightening prospect indeed for the US now. We are blessed in our land by having this freedom through the polling booth. We may not feel that we have very much of a voice, but as Mrs Roosevelt reminds us; with freedom comes responsibility. We will shortly be asked to decide whether the UK should remain in the EU. My prayer is that whatever arguments the two sides of this debate come up with, however media savvy they are, however well they put their cases across, we will see beyond the sound bite and the carefully created campaigns, grasp the real issues, and in the end vote with our consciences. For further information please call or visit our website Jump into Spring Spring brings a lot of promise and a great deal of hard work for the gardener, says Adam McKay As you read this I hope you're feeling quite upbeat as we've seen off winter and spring is now upon us. Spring sees leaf emerging on the trees, more colour appearing (I find Tulips bring the richest colours), more daylight hours and the warmth returning to the sun. Spring is full of anticipation. It maybe full of promise but, it is also full of tasks to do in the garden! With the Easter holidays coming at the end of this month, plus the clocks going forward (remember the saying spring forward, fall back ) you'll probably find yourself surveying your garden and thinking it took a beating during winter. It might seem daunting but, an hour here and there will see a big improvement, which will only benefit your garden for the rest of the year. If it's dry enough (and that includes the soil) then the lawn can be cut. But before that you must get the mower serviced, or at least get the blade sharpened. 10 Continued overleaf 11

7 Continued from previous page A sharpened blade won't tear the blades of grass which helps promote a healthy lawn (no yellowed tips). Lastly, set the height on its highest setting, don't fall into the trap of cutting it short as this will stress the grass, resulting in a washed out green rather than a rich green lawn. If you've been walking on the lawn during the winter you will have compacted the soil, which restricts drainage, and increases the prospect of moss. The best way to alleviate this problem is to aerate the ground. This can easily be done by pushing a fork into the ground and slightly lifting. If you're feeling up to it you could fill the holes left with sand (not builders sand though), a stiff broom will help by brushing it into the holes. By doing this extra task it'll open up the soil allowing better drainage for longer. After a couple of cuts think about 12 applying a weed and feed fertiliser as this will do exactly what is says - if you follow the instructions. If you have bare patches in the lawn I'd suggest seeding the area (a week or so after applying the fertiliser) as it s roughly 80% cheaper than turf and far less work too. It may take a few weeks to germinate but, give it roughly six weeks and you'll have a much better covering of grass. The borders will look unkempt, as you've probably not touched them since winter set in. So start clearing away the spent perennials and grasses. You ll be surprised how much tidier it will look by just doing this job. To make it even tidier mulch the bare soil after you've weeded. If you didn't do the rejuvenating pruning of roses in the winter there's still time to do this now. Remember, roses only flower on this years growth, so reduce their height unless you like looking up at the flowers! Finally, don't fall into the Easter ambush that garden centres and DIY stores set up: that is bedding plants. Frost hasn't been very prevalent over the winter months but, we always get a few sharp ones throughout spring and those tender plants won't recover, so bypass the shelves of summer bedding until May, let the retailer take that risk.
