1 Pastor Mike Poole Westwood World A Publication of Westwood Baptist Church January Edition 1 A Message from the Intentional Interim Minister Entering 2019 Another Way The Christmas song We Three Kings of Orient Are was written in 1857 for the General Theological Seminary in New York City as part of their Christmas pageant. The song celebrates a dramatized version of Matthew 2:1-12. The Bible says the visitors were not kings but Magi perhaps stargazers, astronomers, or holy men trying to contact their Maker. Only three kings are named in the song but it s likely that a large entourage followed. The song names Melchior, Casper and Balthazar, all bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh gifts for kings, priests, and the sacred dead. Some say the star was a special alignment of Jupiter and Saturn, others say it was a comet; we don t know. But we do know this: whatever guided these Magi was itself guided by God. From Persia (southern Iran) to Jerusalem to the doorstep of the despot Herod, the Magi left the comfort of family and friends to find the One who would change their return route. Frederick Buechner writes, Whether he was born in 4 B.C. or A.D. 6, in Bethlehem or Nazareth, whether there were multitudes of the heavenly host to hymn the glory of it or just Mary and her husband when the child was born, the whole course of human history was changed. That is a truth as unassailable as any truth. Art, music, literature, Western culture itself with all its institutions and Western man s whole understanding of himself and his world it is impossible to conceive how differently things would have turned out if that birth had not happened whenever, wherever, however it did. And there is a truth beyond that: for millions of people who have lived since, the birth of Jesus made possible not just a new way of understanding life but a new way of living it. (Originally published in The Faces of Jesus) The Magi entered Jerusalem under the empirical illusion that Herod was in charge; however, they departed another way. What if another way not only signifies a different physical route, but also a spiritual way? Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth and Life. Indeed. Dear friends, let us enter the new year celebrating the Christ who goes with us. Let us follow his Way, let us boldly embrace his Truth, let us experience the fruits of Christ s Life. May visitors come to Westwood searching for Jesus Christ, and may they too depart, as the Magi departed, another way. WESTWOOD WORLD January

You don t need a degree or special skills. ECHO also has opportunities for both daytime and evening volunteers working with clients or working with donations. Read about the many kinds of volunteer opportunities on ECHO s website at echo-inc.org under the Volunteer tab. All are welcome! com/westwoodyouth WestwoodYouth Dear Youth and Families, We certainly had a busy and fun filled Christmas season didn t we! It s kind of a letdown now that all of that is over, isn t it? Well, not exactly or at least it doesn t have to be that way. Did you know that, according to the liturgical church calendar, the season following Advent and Christmas is called Epiphany? It begins with the story of the Magi visiting Jesus and ends with the Transfiguration, just before the season of Lent begins. Still, what does the word epiphany even mean? Here s a hint: All of the stories in this season are meant to reveal to us that Jesus is in fact the Son of God, the Messiah! Therefore, the word epiphany means a sudden revelation, a new and deeper understanding. When I was 19, I served as a volunteer with an organization called Epiphany. I was part of a group of about 25 people who planned and led a retreat inside a juvenile correction facility for young men, ages The hope was that through this ministry, these young men would have a sudden revelation or gain a deeper understanding of who Jesus is and how much he loves them, regardless of their past or present circumstances. Actually, that is something I pray will happen for our youth and families as well, that we will not see this season as a letdown after Christmas and, instead, we will be open to the new ways in which Christ s love is revealed to us and live differently because of it.
