1 The Newsletter of All Saints Cathedral Parish Bathurst and St Barnabas Parish South Bathurst Sunday 5 November 2017 Twenty Second Sunday After Pentecost To Be a Saint Means to Be Yourself Psalm 150 O praise God in his holiness: praise him in the firmament of his power. I t is not easy for us to think of ourselves as being holy by being ourselves. Firstly, aware of our own incompleteness and brokenness, we can easily take on some other person s view of what it means to be holy. Secondly, once we ve got over this idea, it can be a long process to discover who we really are. Fundamental to this understanding is accepting who you are before God. For it was you who formed me in my inward parts, you knit me together in my mother s womb, says Psalm 139. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. The beginning of holiness is loving yourself as a creation of God. And that means all of yourself, even the parts of you that you wish weren t there, the parts of you that you wish God hadn t made, even the parts of you that cause you sadness. God loves us like a parent loves a child often more for the parts of the child that are weaker, or where the child struggles or fails. More often than not it s our weaknesses that provide paths to holiness, because they remind us that we are reliant on God. Believing that God wants us to be ourselves has been a fantastically liberating idea for me. While I m always called to grow, God asks only that I be myself, no matter what situation. So when I m listening to a friend tell me his problems, sitting at the bedside of someone facing their own mortality, or standing before a homeless man in the Parish Office, I don t have to say, What would St. Peter, or Thomas Cranmer, or Mother Theresa of Calcutta do? They certainly can be models of Christian action for me, but God has not placed them in this particular situation. God, in his mysterious wisdom, has placed me there, with my talents and skills, as well my weaknesses and limitations. Therefore, a better question is, What should I do by the grace of God? As the Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote in Kingfisher catch fire, for Christ plays in ten thousand places, lovely in eyes and lovely in limbs not his... In other words, my eyes and your limbs. Your eyes and limbs. Wishing all a blessed All Saints Day. Fr James We worship on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people and we honour and pay our respects to elders past and present. Praise him in his noble acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him in the sound of the trumpet: praise him upon the lute and harp. Praise him in the cymbals and dances: praise him upon the strings and pipe. Praise him upon the well-tuned cymbals: praise him upon the loud cymbals. Let everything that hath breath: praise the Lord.

The next Lunchtime Concert will be on Monday 13 November at the Cathedral at 1pm. Bethany Carter will be playing the harp. Come and enjoy all this wonderful music. FELLOWSHIP Fellowship will be held on Monday 6 November at Lalage Gabb s home, 10 Opperman Way, Bathurst from am. Come and join us. Bring your lunch and your handwork. All welcome. FRIENDS OF THE CATHEDRAL Musical Evening: Everyone is invited to A Delightful Evening of Music on Friday 17 November from 5.30pm for 6pm to 8pm in the Chapter House of the Cathedral. Donation of $20pp. Proceeds to repair the Moses Window which was in greater need than the Daniel Window and has been removed from the Cathedral this week. We are still ìn need of some more money to finally pay for the restoration so we invite you to please come along to the Musical Evening so that the final costs can be met. Donations are also most welcome. BUNNINGS BBQ Our next Bunnings BBQ is on Saturday 18 November. If you can assist please place your name on the roster which is in the Narthex. REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY A Ceremony of Remembrance will be held in the Cathedral on Wednesday 6 December at 7pm. Everyone is invited to remember lost loved ones. All are welcome to place names of those who have died in the pages in the Cathedral foyer. We are especially inviting families of those who have lost a loved one this year in our parish to attend. 4 A READING FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION (7.9-17) After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. FOR THE WORD OF THE LORD Thanks be to God A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF JOHN (3.1-3) See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. FOR THE WORD OF THE LORD Thanks be to God A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (5.1-12) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. FOR THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ ETHICAL CHALLENGES Lord Jesus Christ, in a world that thinks globally and in large numbers, help us to remember that human beings, animals and plants, the very earth and seas are affected by our investments, purchases and research. For child workers, slaves, prison workers, those trapped in a cycle of depravity, Loving God, hear our prayer. Give us wisdom and discernment to face honestly each choice, comment, attitude that reflects our ethical stance. May we have true and disinterested judgement. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God what is good, acceptable and perfect. Romans 12: 2 Mothers Union Canada observes the White Ribbon Campaign each year to raise awareness of gender violence. Statistics show that every six days a woman is murdered in Canada by her husband or intimate partner. Branch members hold a silent vigil on 30 November to draw attention to this. In 2016 they were joined by politicians, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and people from surrounding churches. Thanks be to God for their witness.
