11 The Cup Ποτήριον (po-tāˊ-rē-on) cup Literally: a vessel used for drinking Figuratively: ποτήριον is an expression for destiny in both good (Psa 23:5) and bad ( Psa 75:8) senses, for death in general (Jer 25:15-17)

12 The Cup Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane Figurative use - clearly this is the cup of God s wrath (Luke 22:20) We deserve God s wrath due to sin Rev 14:10; 16:19 Christ s physical death satisfied God s wrath for all who will believe

14 C. How did He demonstrate His love? 1. He loved even His betrayer - Jesus washed Judas feet - Jesus showed Judas honor 13:26

15 The host at a feast would dip into a common bowl and pull out a particularly tasty bit and pass it to a guest as a special mark of honor or friendship Jesus was demonstrating a final gesture of His love for Judas even though he would betray him. MacArthur.

He supported and encouraged His disciples when He was the one under pressure The world of the disciples was about to be shattered Anticipating their devastation, Jesus spoke comfort to their hearts[.] Instead of the disciples lending support to Jesus in the hours before His cross, He had to support them spiritually as well as emotionally. 17 C. How did He demonstrate His love? 3. He loved despite great faults. Peter was sleeping while His master was praying, and resisting while His master was submitting. He followed at a distance, sat down among the Lord s enemies, and denied the Lord, the faith, and the brotherhood. Scofield.

19 From God s other known attributes we may learn much about His love. We can know, for instance, that because God is selfexistent, His love had no beginning; because He is eternal, His love can have no end; because He is infinite, it has no limit; because He is holy, it is the quintessence of all spotless purity; because He is immense, His love is an incomprehensibly vast, bottomless, shoreless sea before which we kneel in joyful silence and from which the loftiest eloquence retreats confused and abashed. 20 The love of God is one of the great realities of the universe, a pillar upon which the hope of the world rests. But it is a personal, intimate thing, too. God does not love populations, He loves people. He loves not masses, but men. He loves us all with a mighty love that has no beginning and can have no end. 21 Ezekiel 16:4-7 In this passage, God pictures us as a baby newly born. No one even cleaned the fluids off the baby. No one wrapped the baby in cloths. No one had compassion on this baby. The baby was thrown into the open field. Then I passed by and saw you kicking about and as you lay there I said to you, Live! I made you grow like a plant in the field. You grew up and developed and became the most beautiful of jewels. This is His heart for us.

27 II. FOOT WASHING C. Cleansing from sin Basic point: When you have become born again, you need to be cleansed from sin to maintain a strong relationship with God. But you do not lose your salvation when you sin; you do not need to start over again.

29 The cleansing that Christ does at salvation never needs to be repeated atonement is complete at that point. But all who have been cleansed by God s gracious justification need constant washing in the experiential sense as they battle sin in the flesh. Believers are justified and granted imputed righteousness (Phil. 3:8,9), but still need sanctification and personal righteousness (Phil. 3:12-14). MacArthur.
