1 1 2 11/4/01 2Timothy 4 Paul the apostle gives his final charge to Timothy in chapter four. 1. In chapter one Paul told Timothy what he was to be, courageous. 2. In chapter two Paul told Timothy what he was called to be, a son, a soldier, an athlete, a farmer, a vessel and a servant. 3. In chapter three Paul told Timothy what he was to know, the last day deception and apostasy. 4. n chapter four in view of the last day deception and apostasy Paul is going to tell Timothy what he is to do, preach the word Paul's last charge to Timothy. 4:1 The perspective regarding the charge. 1) The word charge diamarturomai is a technical term for an oath. a) It is used by the Greeks to call the gods and men to bear witness. b) Paul uses the word other times. 1Tim. 5:21; 2 Tim. 2:14; 4:1 * Urgency is the tone in the section! 2) The charge if before God and Jesus Christ. a) The implication is before God who sees and hears all things, the ultimate One to who Timothy is accountable to. b) The compound phrase refers to the same person. 3) The two facts of Timothy s charge are related to Jesus. a) He will judge the living and the dead. 1)) The Father judges no man but has committed all judgment to the Son. Jn. 5:22 2)) Jesus is ordained of God to be the judge of the living and the dead. Acts 10:42 b) He will do this at His appearing and His kingdom. 1)) The word for appearing is epiphania which means His manifestation and was used for the manifestation of gods and the emperor. 2Thess. 2:8; 1Tim. 6:14; 2Tim. 1:10; 4:1, 8; Tit. 2:13 2)) The kingdom is the rule and reign of Jesus on the earth for onethousand years in Jerusalem. Rev. 20:1-10 4:2 The particulars regarding the charge. 1) Timothy was to preach the Word. a) The word preach kerusso means a herald from the king to proclaim.

2 3 4 a)) This is the first of five aorist imperatives. b)) All five imperatives are to be directed to the false teachers and the one s being deceived. * Noah, Jonah, John the Baptist, etc. b) The word logos refers to the gospel he had been taught, that which was profitable for ministry and fully equipped him. Rom. 10:13-15; 2Tim. 3:15-17 c) Jesus was the good news to be preached among the Gentiles and Jews. 1Tim. 3:16; 2Tim. 1:8, 13; 2:15, 3:10 2) Timothy was to preach ready in season and out of season, referring to opportune time and inopportune time. a) He was to be ready ephistemi means to be prepared, stand by at all times to preach the word. b) We are to be redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Eph. 5:16 3) Timothy was to convince elegmos which means to bring to conviction and confession. 4) Timothy was to rebuke epitimeson meaning to point out a person s fault and reprimand. 5) Timothy was to exhort parakaleo meaning to encourage, come alongside. * All five imperatives are to be done from the word of God, the gospel! 6) The manner is which these five imperatives are to be done is given. a) With all longsuffering Makrothumia to endure and persevere. 2Tim. 2:24-26 b) With teaching didakalia instruction in doctrine. 4:3-4 The reason for the imperative commands. 1) The time will come when the people will not endure sound doctrine but according to their own desires. vs. 3a-b a) The word endure anecho means to hold oneself upright. 1Tim. 4:1-3; 2Tim. 3:1-5; 2Pet. 2; Jude b) Sound doctrine hugiaino means healthy, a key word to the letter. 1Tim. 1:10; 6:3; 2Tim. 1:13; 4:3; Tit. 1:9,13; 2:1-2 c) To suit their own evil desires. 2) They having itching ears they will heap up episoruo literally means to pile up for themselves teachers. vs. 3c-d * This is the only time it appears. a) Such were the false teachers at Ephesus. 1Tim. 1:3, 7; 6:5 b) Such was the condition of the people at Ephesus as in the days of Jeremiah,

3 5 6 when the prophet spoke falsely and God s people loved it so. Jer. 5:31 3) The outcome being that they will turn away their ear from truth and turn aside to fables or myths. a) The phrase turn away apostrpho means averting, a deliberate conscious decision to cross over. 1Tim. 1:6; 5:15; 6:10; 2Tim. 1:15; Tit. 1:14 b) It is a medical term for a dislocated limb. c) Turned unto ektrepomai wondering from the true path to fables. 4:5 The responsibility of Timothy. * Timothy is given four imperatives. 1) Timothy was to be watchful I all things. a) The word but marks a sharp contrast between Timothy and the false teachers. b) The word watchful neepho means to be sober, alert or clear headed, in all things. to oversee the church from the false teachers, continuously, present tense. Gal. 1:10-11; 1Thess. 2:3-5 2) Timothy was to endure afflictions. a) The word endure kakopatheo means to suffer evil. b) He was to endure hardness as a good soldier, same word. 2Tim. 2:3, 9 3)Timothy was to do the work of an evangelist. a) The article is missing, he is not an evangelist, yet responsible to evangelize with the good news. b) Philip is called an evangelist, any church that is not evangelizing is dying! Acts 21:8; Eph. 4:11 4) Timothy was to fulfill his ministry. a) The metaphor is of a ship whose sail is full to capacity. 2Tim. 4:17b b) The call is to be steadfast and loyal to what God had called him and fully performing it. 2Tim. 2:1-7 * Eph. 2:10 4:6-8 Paul's assessment of his life. 4:6 Paul s present. 1) For I am already to be poured out as a drink offering. a) The tense is present the process has begun and found two times in the New Testament. Phil. 2:17 a) To be poured out as a drink offering. Num. 15:1-10 b) To finalized the offering, evaporating in steam as a sweet savor to God. 2) And the time of my departure is at hand. a) To departure, used of lifting an anchor, unyoking an ox, loosening

Phil. 1:23 c) Paul did not see his death as out of God s control but rather as his next orders from God. 4:7 Paul s past. 1) I have fought the good fight. a) The word fought agon means to agonize in athletic contest. 1Cor. 9:24-27; Eph. 6:10 2) I have finished the race. Phil. 3:13-14; Heb. 12:1 a) The word for race dromos the specific course God had for him. b) This was Paul's desire. Acts 13:25, 20:24 3) I have kept tereo the faith. a) He had been loyal and faithful to Jesus, the gospel and living it out. b) He had guarded the deposit of the gospel and lived according to rules. 1Tim. 6:20; 2Tim. 1:14; 2:3-5 4:8 Paul s future. 1) Finally there is for me laid up a crown of righteousness. a) A crown of righteousness stephanos refers to a victor's crown in athletic games. 2) The Lord, the righteous judge will give to him on that Day. a) Jesus is the one to reward us. b) At the Bema-Seat. Rom. 14:20; 1Cor. 3:13-14; 4:5; 2Cor. 5;10 3) But not only Paul but also to all who have loved his appearing, a) Evidenced by fighting the good fight. b) Evident by how one lives. 1Jn. 3:4 4:9-18 Paul's loving heart disclosed. 4:9 Paul desires Timothy to come to him. 1) The word diligent spoudason means to make haste. 2) Paul already mentioned his longing to see Timothy. 2Tim. 1:4 3) Paul saw Timothy as his son in the faith who was dear to him and longed to see him before his departure. 4) It would take Timothy four to six months to make the journey. 5) Apparently Paul was taking into account the slow judicial process of his previous arrest and trial. Acts 24:27; 28: :10 The reason for Timothy s coming. 1) Demas had forsaken Paul.

5 9 10 a) The word forsaken egkataleipo means to abandon or desert, leaving him in a lurch, as in verse sixteen. b) The reason is that Damas love this present world more than the appearing of Jesus, the contrast is unmistakable. 1Jn. 2: )) Demas is mentioned by Paul fellow-laborer. Col. 4:14; Phile. 24 2)) Demas must of began to drift away slowly as Hebrew warns us not to do. Heb. 3:12-14; Col. 3: 2 3)) Deman allowed the thrones to choke out the word. Matt. 13:22 c) Demas departed to Thessalonica, believed to be his home-town. 2) Crescens had gone to Galatia, across the Agean on a mission journey. * We know nothing else about him. 3) Titus had gone to Dalmatia, across the Adriatic Sea also on a mission. a) Paul was alone and lonely. b) Paul desired to have Timothy his son in the faith present before his departure, dear to him 4:11 The only companion was Luke. 1) Luke was Paul s companion called the beloved physician. Col. 4:14 a) Luke joined Paul in his second missionary journey. Acts 16:10; 20:6 b) Perhaps he was Paul s secretary for Second Timothy, called an amanuensis? 2) Paul was also requesting that Timothy bring Mark. a) He would be useful for Paul in ministry. b) Mark had departed in their first journey and Paul had refused to take him, so he went with Barnabas to Cyprus. Acts 13:1-3, 5, 13 c) While Paul was in prison he mention Mark as his fellow-laborer. Col. 4:10; Phile. 24 d) Mark was involved with Peter later on. 1Pet. 5:13 4:12 The replacement for Timothy. 1) Tychicus is mention as Paul s fellowlaborer also. Acts 20:4; Col. 4:7 2) Tychicus would oversee the church in the absence of Timothy. a) He is mentioned in Ephesus. Eph. 6:21 b) Paul had sent him to Crete. Tit. 3:12 4:13 Paul s personal request. 1) Paul wanted Timothy to bring the cloak he had left with Carpus at Troas. a) Probably for the cold and rain. a) The cloak had a hole in middle for head, like a poncho.

6 11 12 c) Possibly they were left at Paul s arrest and he was unable to take them? 2) Paul wanted the books and especially the parchments. a) The books biblion refers to papyrus rolls. b) The parchment membrana means membranes, animal skins, velums codices probably of the Old Testament and perhaps some of his own notes. 4:14 Paul names a person who had harmed him. 1) Alexander the coppersmith had done Paul much harm. a) Alexander had done Paul much harm, though nothing is given. b) Alexander is not to be confused with two others mentioned. 1)) Alexander who deflected the faith. 1Tim. 1:20 2)) Alexander the silversmith in Ephesus. Acts 19:33 2) Paul turned Alexander over to God s judgment, according to his works. 4:15 Paul warns Timothy to beware of Alexander. 1) Timothy was to watch out for him when he came to Rome. 2) He had greatly resisted their words. a) The text certainly reveals opposition to the gospel. b) The text could indicate that he was responsible for the arrest of Paul? 4:16 Paul's first defense before Nero answer. 1) At Paul s first defense no one stood with him. a) The word defense apologia means apology. b) The word stood was a technical word for one who stands in behalf of the accused. 2) All forsook Paul and he desired that it not be laid to their charge. a) Paul could possibly see the difficulty they had in leaving him, even reluctant perhaps. b) Paul models a beautiful type of Jesus interceding for those who abandoned Him at His greatest hour. c) The Lord had appeared to Paul at Jerusalem after he was almost killed by the crowd and told him he would have to bear witness of Him at Rome. Acts 23:11 4:17 Paul s empowerment.

7 ) But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me. a) He did it at Corinth. Acts 18:9-10 b) He did this as he despaired of life in Macedonia. 2Cor. 1:8-10 2) Paul s gospel was preached fully to the Gentiles: Herod Agripa, Felix, Festus and now Nero. 3) Paul was delivered out of the mouth of lion. a) Some see this as a parallel to our Lord. Ps. 22:21 b) Others see it as a reference to Nero. c) But perhaps the most likely is to Satan. 1Pet. 5:8 4:18 The confidence of Paul. 1) And the Lord delivered me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. a) Looking unto Jesus the author Heb. 12:2 b) Never leave thee... Heb. 13:5; 2Tim. 1:12, Phil. 1:6 2) To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen! 4:19-22 The closing greetings and benediction 4:19 Paul s friends. 1) Priscilla and Aquilla were a precious couple that had the same occupation of tent making and God place them together. Acts 18:18, 26; Rom. 16:3; 16:19 2) The household of Onesiphorus, he had sought Paul out in the Roman prisons. 2Tim. 1:16 4:20 Paul s friends. 3) Erastus stayed at Corinth. Acts 19:22; Rom. 16:3 * He could be the chamberlain of Corinth? 4) Trophimus had been left sick in Miletus. a) He was an Ephesisan and co-worker of Paul. Acts 20:4-5; 21:29 b) Miletus as the place of Paul s last meeting with the Ephesian elders before going to Jerusalem. Acts 20:17 4:21 Paul s closing plead. 1) Do your best to come to me before winter * October to April, storms at sea. 2) A number of individuals are named as sending greetings, Eubulus greets you, as well as Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brethren. 4:22 The closing benediction. 1) The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

8 a) The spirit of man is bent towards the flesh by nature. b) Only by the Holy Spirit being control is there hope for man. 2) Grace be with you. Amen. a) The source of everything in the believers life is grace. b) Unmerited favor by the atoning work of Jesus
