1 1 2 10/14/01 2Timothy 2:1-13 Paul the apostle has told Timothy in chapter one what he is to be, courageous after the model of Paul and Epaphroditus! Paul gave Timothy several reasons why he is to be courageous. 1. Paul's affection. vs Paul's prayers. vs A godly heritage. vs God gave him gifts. vs God gave him the Spirit of power. vs Christ has abolished death. vs Paul's confidence is to be persevered by Christ, example of courage. vs The example of a courageous servant, Onesiphorus. vs Christ will reward each believer. vs. 18 Having said this, Paul now goes on to chapter two to tell Timothy what he is called to be. There are seven metaphors that Paul uses to show Timothy what he is called to be, and so with every believer. * The second is a simile for it is introduced by the word as or like. 1. Son. vs Soldier. vs Athlete. vs farmer. vs Workman. vs Vessel. vs Servant. vs. 24 Remember the three-fold outline. I. Commitment to perseverance through the gospel. 2Tim. 1:3-2:13 II. Commitment to protection of the gospel. 2Tim. 2:14-3:17 III. Commitment to the proclamation of the gospel. 2Tim. 4:1-18 2:1-7 The various aspects of a person in Christ. 2:1 Timothy was to be like a faithful son. The word therefore is the sun total or result of what was said in chapter one, in view of what I've said, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. * Keep on being strong, it is in the present passive! 2) The source of Timothy s strength is to be the grace that is in Jesus Christ. a) Grace charis means unmeritted favor. 2Tim. 1:6-9, b) This is one of God's attributes that is immutable, it neither decreases or increases.

2 3 4 c) Law given by Moses but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Jn. 1:17 d) By the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace what was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was in me. 2Cor.15:10 * My grace is sufficient, for my strength is made perfect in weakness. 2Cor. 12:9 e) The God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that you have suffered a while, make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you. 1Pet. 5:10 f) We are to grow in grace, it is to be multiplied. 2Pet. 1:2; 3:18 3) The command is a spiritual one. a) The word strong endunamoo, means to be strengthened or endued, but it is for inward strength through grace. Eph. 6:10 b) The command is emphatic you and in the present, passive imperative, emphasizing progress in strength. * Literally, you keep on being empowered inwardly! 4) The command is to Paul s spiritual son. a) The word for son teknon is used for natural and spiritual children. b) The term is one of endearing affection, one produced by divine promise. Jn. 1:12 5) The source of this grace is bound up in one person, Christ Jesus. a) The title Christ means the anointed of God and used for the Messiah of God. b) The name Jesus means, Jehovah is salvation. c) The God who became man is the reservoir of grace for all who are to be saved and dispensed to after salvation. 2:2 Timothy was to be a faithful to his heritage. 1) First as a son Timothy is to be faithful to commit to others the things he had been taught by Paul. a) The things point to the gospel message for lost man and the doctrines to revealed by God. 1) The Great Commission. Matt. 28:19 2) The lost condition of all mankind. Rom. 3:23 3) The new creation and divine nature imparted for life. 2Cor. 5:17; 2Pet. 1:3-4 b) The word commit parathemi means to set besides or before, the technical meaning is a deposit.

3 5 6 c) As Paul had deposited to Timothy the gospel, Timothy was not only to guard it but to deposit it to others. d) These men are to be faithful or reliable men. Acts 20:32; 1Tim. 6:20; 2Tim. 1;12, 14, 18 1)) Those who have been proven. 2)) Those who have God is anointing and using. 2) The purpose of this command is that these men in tern be able to teach others also the gospel and doctrine. a) Just as Paul had been taught by Jesus and then taught others. b) Just as Paul had discipled Timothy, so he was to disciple others. c) For all believers must contend for the faith, which was once and for all given to the saints. Jude 3 2:3 Timothy was to be like a soldier. 1) The conclusion once again was that Timothy was to be a good soldier like Paul and Epaphroditus. 2Tim. 1:8, 17 a) The address is emphatic again, you, Timothy. b) Epaphroditusis called a fellow-soldier by Paul. Phil. 2:25 2) The phrase endure hardness sunkakopatheo does not mean merely to suffer some hardship different from other soldiers of the cross but that he was to share in the part of sufferings that fell to him. Phil. 3:13-14 a) In Classical Greek it commonly meant to suffer misfortune or to be in distress. b) It is in the imperative aorist active, a command with no specific reference to its duration, repetition or completeness. (The Complete Bib. Library Gr. grammar index: 200, 213) c) The same tense is found one other time in the epistle. 2Tim. 4:5 1) Paul is telling Timothy to share with him in the patient enduring of sufferings for the gospel. 2Tim. 1:8 2) Paul's personal cost was to be bond in chains yet the word was not bond. 2:9 3) Paul declares why he endures all the sufferings, for the sake of those chosen in Christ. Eph. 1:4 * Moses chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. Heb 11:25 3) Timothy was to be a good soldier. a) The word good Kalos as we have stated is related to an Indo-European word for powerful, excellent and

4 7 8 strong with the sense of something being healthy, serviceable, what is ordered or sound.
