14 Sample Church Support Letter Dear We hope our letter finds you well! We are writing to ask for your help. The pastors at Covenant Fellowship Church (CFC) are sending us to the Sovereign Grace Pastors College (PC) this fall. The PC is an intensive, ten-month program that combines theological instruction with an emphasis on pastoral care and spiritual growth. After the PC, we will do a one-year internship at a Sovereign Grace church before continuing on into pastoral ministry. We don t know where that internship will be or what it will lead to, but we trust that, as God has led us to this point, he will make that next step clearer. We are writing because we need to raise financial support for all of our living expenses as we prepare to help advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You know us and you know that our heart is for the local church. We love how God advances the Gospel of Christ through the local church, and we now have an opportunity to receive training at the PC to equip us for focused Gospel ministry in the local church. Right now we are preparing for this next step in many ways. Together with a CFC pastor, we have carefully reviewed our budget and have determined that we need about $4,000 per month. This covers our living expenses, insurance, moving expenses, etc. In addition, we have been setting aside money each month to meet this goal and Michelle has been doing some work from home. We are also selling our house. Even with all of this, there is still a long way to go and we are humbly asking that people partner with us financially. As we considered who could join us in these next two years, we thought of you. What we re doing is asking people to consider financially partnering with us monthly at $50, $75, or $100 or whatever works for your family. This would go a long way toward providing for us as we pursue God s call upon our lives. If that is not possible perhaps you may be able to make a one-time special gift. But here s what I d like to do. Instead of leaving things at this, I d actually like to talk about this next opportunity with you over the phone. Letters don t do our friendship justice, so I d like to talk with you about what s coming and hear your thinking about this opportunity. So please expect a call in the next week just to set up a time that works best for you when we can talk further. I m really looking forward to connecting with you! If you d like to contact me directly about this before my call, send me an at JacobYoung84@gmail.com. We re excited about what God is doing and are deeply grateful that you d consider this opportunity with us. I pray you enjoy the grace of Christ today!

We re very excited about this addition to our family and hope you join us in thanking God for this blessing! A second bit of news. For the past six years I ve been in an evaluation process to discern if God is calling me into pastoral ministry. It s been my heart s desire to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to care for God s people as my full-time vocation for many years. 18 Sample Thank You Letter Dear, I am so grateful for your gift of to this mission we are a part of together. Thank you for your generosity! I find these days bitter sweet, where we must say goodbye for a time to those we dearly love as we say Yes to what the Lord is calling us to. But it is a comfort that we do not go alone. When I think of you guys and your generosity, my mind goes to 3 John 5 8. You are sending us out well in a way that honors God to proclaim the name of Christ. But more than merely sending, you are fellow workers for the truth alongside us. We are doing this together, and that is a great comfort to me. your life and faith give God great pleasure.

20 Sample Short Newsletter The Young Quill August 2013 It s a surprisingly cool August day. The shade is resting upon me, the yard is freshly mown. The sky spans in a happy blue above. Owen is running around the yard exploring the wonders of flowers and leaves, turning twigs into phones and drumsticks. There s a goodness about the world that makes the soul smack its lips for a better taste. This is all in our friend s backyard. We ve sold the house and are on the cusp of packing the moving truck and driving down to Louisville. These friends have been some of our closest during our time at Covenant Fellowship Church, and they ve graciously opened their basement to us. I tell people we re basement dwellers for Jesus right now. These days, the promises of God have become precious to my soul. The one that fills me with the most faith is at the very end of Matthew s Gospel account. Jesus is giving his disciples the Great commission: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. This teaching is the very reason we re going to the Pastors College. Where else will people be baptized and taught to follow the commands of Jesus but in a local church where the Bible is open and Christ enjoyed? That s why we re basement dwelling for Jesus. But the promise is sweeter than the command. Jesus follows the commission with this: And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. This feeds the soul. The commission is great to all nations? But the provision is infinite: Jesus Christ, who upholds the universe by the word of his power (Hebrews 1:3) is near you he s with you. One way we apply this is with Owen at bedtime. When I put Owen to bed, leaving him alone in a dark room, I want him to know that there s more to this than what meets the eye. I can t be with him always, but there is one who can. So I ask him, Owen, why don t you need to be afraid? And he replies, Jesus with me. As we re basement dwellers for Jesus and you guys walk alongside us we don t need to be afraid. There s a lot to do but this whole thing belongs to God. He s got it all in his hand. And at the end of the day, when the sky pulls back the veil on the stars and the moon rules the air, we don t need to be afraid. We re not alone. Jesus is with us. Family News I. Michelle starts her third trimester this month, and is looking beautiful. We found out we re having another boy! Her due date is November 4, but Owen was 12 days early, so we re expecting the end of October. II. The sale of our house went well, and I can now drive past Home Depot without the anxiety of wondering if I need to get something. III. Owen very excited about moving to Louisville, but Michelle suspects that this may primarily be due to the fact that Louisville, Kentucky is fun to say. IV. Folks have asked about our new address in Louisville. We re moving down at the end of the month, so if you d like to send us mail, our address is: 1802 Pershing Avenue Louisville, KY Ministry Post I. Jacob was able to address Covenant Fellowship Church recently, expressing our gratitude for the last six years of our life together. We have been shaped, encouraged, and cared for in more ways than we can count by our friends and pastors at CFC. We thank God for them! II. Our final move date when we drive down for good is August 31! III. We are still looking to raise the rest of our support for the next two years. Please pray that God provides! IV. Classes start September 14! V. There are Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Louisville a sign that Jesus loves Louisville and that they enjoy happiness and goodness in the world. We anxiously anticipate our first doughnut there! For regular updates and information on how to support us visit:

21 Sample Long Newsletter The Young Quill April 2014 Do you ever have hard thoughts about God? Are you ever suspicious of God that he s a tad annoyed or hassled by you? Do you ever wonder how much more kindness God is going to have to stomp back to the cupboard and scrounge out for you? Maybe these questions are a bit overstated, but they aim at capturing that sense of low-grade anxiety about one s relationship with God that I ve found to be all too common in my own soul. Potentially these thoughts aren t something you face regularly but they are subtle things I wrestle with on a regular basis. Have I outlasted God s kindness to me? Probably my favorite book in the Bible is Paul s letter to the Ephesians. Saying it s my favorite book in the Bible is a bit like saying that the Grand Canyon is your favorite national park a bit of an understatement for the grandeur of what we re talking about. One of the great peaks of Ephesians (to use our national park theme) is the idea of riches. Paul speaks of riches six times in the first three chapters of Ephesians. M The riches of God s grace which he lavished upon us in Christ (1:7) M The riches of God s glorious inheritance in the saints in knowing the Father (1:18) M That God is rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us in Christ (2:4) M The immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus (2:7) M The unsearchable riches of Christ in the Gospel (3:8) M The riches of God s glory (3:16) Clearly Paul has a thing for talking about God s riches. What exactly is going on here? I think Paul is trying to help us see that though we have deeply sinned against God by our nature, and justly deserve to be sent to Hell for breaking God s good designs in creation and offending his holiness, God s posture towards us is gracious. It s this posture that Paul keeps going on about when he talks about riches. It s not just a slight leaning posture of graciousness an oh well, I guess I ll forgive you posture. It s a posture that leaps over the Grand Canyon of our separation from God in graciousness. God does what he doesn t have to he s gracious and ultra, uber, extra gracious beyond belief. But his graciousness has a focal point. It s not graciousness thrown out willy-nilly. It s God s graciousness to us in Christ. Christ is the focal point, the fountain of God s graciousness to us. So the riches of God are all found in Christ through the Gospel that Gospel whereby we see our offense against God, and God s leap-over-the- Grand-Canyon grace towards us in Christ. God doesn t mildly love, or slightly give he pulls from his infinite person to constantly give a deluge of undeserved kindness to us. That s why it s immeasurable you cannot measure God. Which leads us back to our original anxiety have I met the end of God s kindness to me? Paul might turn the question around on us: Can you find the end of God? Of course not! God s gracious giving of grace to us is the giving of himself to us in Christ. When we see the goodness of God in the Gospel, we are invited to feast not on grace as a dish separate from God, but upon God himself. To enjoy God. That s why Paul can t get over the riches thing. Because God is so magnificent, and his posture towards us is so mindboggling amazing, God is rich, rich, rich! And we are invited in the Gospel to do nothing but receive Him to receive God s work to save us in Christ apart from our efforts, and then to be invited into a land of unending God of unending excitements and satisfying pleasures in God himself. In Christ, God has been profoundly rich to us. So will we have any reason to be suspicious of God? No; In Christ, God is always rich. For regular updates and information on how to support us visit:

22 Sample Long Newsletter Family News M Life in the Young house has slowly been settling down. Much like the rest of the residents of North America, we ve eagerly anticipated the oncoming of spring and the end of shoveling snow. M The warming weather has confirmed that yes, Owen is not only a boy, but a Wildman who needs a brisk wind upon his face and the warm sun upon his lion s mane hair. Needless to say, he s looking forward to being outside more. Isaac, though a bit over loved at times by Owen, is learning to roll over. A major feat! M We recently had the honor of having Jerry Bridges for a week here at the Pastors College. Here you can see Isaac staring him down. Ministry Post M The major update we re excited to report is that we are officially moving to Manchester, NH with the hopes of planting a church in the city! Jacob will be joining the leadership team of King of Grace Church in Haverhill, Massachusetts as an intern under the leadership of Paul Buckley. He ll be evaluated over the next year to clarify a calling to church plant and aiming at ordination next summer. We are very excited about the Lord s leading and eager to move forward with reaching Manchester, NH with the Gospel! M We are going to be updating you as things in this area become clearer. For those who are currently supporting us monthly, please keep sending your checks to Covenant Fellowship. For those who are interested in supporting us into the future we ll be updating you with how you can give in our next newsletter. M One highlight from our visit to Manchester in December was meeting Mike Goff, the pastor of The Great Exchange Church in the city. Mike planted the church two years and very graciously took Michelle and me around the city, talking about what s going on. Mike s church is the only Gospel-centered church in the city right now, though there are several other good churches seeking to serve a population of about 110,000. Manchester is a city that needs the Gospel and we re looking forward to updating you in our next newsletter with more information about the city. Pastors College Graduation M The Pastors College graduation will be on June 8 at 6 pm. If you would be interested in attending which would be totally awesome but quite unnecessary! please send me an so that I can give you more details: JacobYoung84@gmail.com. Final Thought You have enemies? Good. That means you ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. ~Winston Churchil Prayer Needs M The rest of the PC year. There are many things still to do, and we all need grace to remain faithful and happy in the Lord amidst all the to do s! M There are many plans still to finalize with our upcoming move this summer. Please pray for wisdom, guidance and grace upon our family as we make this next transition. M Please pray for the mission of the Gospel as we look to reach the lost for Christ in Manchester, NH. We long for more people to know Christ! For regular updates and information on how to support us visit:
