2 REFLECTION and PREPARATION Psalm 16:1-2 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you. Many times the Psalms tell us to take refuge in God alone. Taking refuge means that we seek and find our joy in Him. We naturally chase after things which we think will bring us joy. But earthly things cannot satisfy us. Blaise Pascal warns us, There once was in man a true happiness of which now remain to him only the mark and empty trace, which he in vain tries to fill from all his surroundings, seeking from things absent the help he does not obtain in things present. But these are all inadequate, because the infinite abyss can only be filled by an infinite and immutable object, that is to say, by God Himself. 2

5 ACKNOWLEDGING GOD S GRACE CONFESSION of FAITH The Heidelberg Catechism, Question 1 Minister: Congregation: What is your only comfort, in life and in death? That I belong - body and soul, in life and in death not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, Who at the cost of His own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that He protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit His purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him. 5

13 PRAYERS OF REFLECTION Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Women s Ministry The Women's Noon Fellowship will meet on Tuesday, August 18 at 12:00 noon at the home of Jean Cotten. We are going to start a study of Cynthia Heald's "Becoming a Woman Whose God is Enough." All women of the church are invited to attend.
