1 Third Sunday of Lent 3rd & 4th 2018 The God-Shaped Hole A warm welcome to our parishioners and visitors who are celebrating the Eucharist with us at Sacred Heart Church and Maria Regina Church. Fr George Kolodziej SDS Parish Priest Pope Francis Prayer Intentions Formation in Spiritual Discernment That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on a personal and communitarian levels. Thoughts of Fr Francis Jordan Do everything as if you really saw God before you. This is a sure way to make great progress in virtue. We're born with a God-shaped hole in our hearts. It's a space for God alone. Until we recognise what it is, we try to fill it up by stuffing earthly things into it possessions, activities, self-importance. It's like trying to force the wrong piece of a jigsaw puzzle into a space not meant for it. We don't know why we're not satisfied, so we search for novelty in the things we cram into the hole. It doesn't work. Nothing but God will fit the God-shaped hole. Lent is our time to unclog that hole, to clear out all the litter. The more we try to fill that hole with God, something wonderful happens. We want to give God more and more room. The feeling lasts longer and longer. The God-shaped hole enlarges! Each year it widens. Like a dilated pupil in the eye, people see more and more of God in us and less and less of our own willfulness. We are slowly transformed into the person God calls us to be. ~adapted from the God- Shaped hole, Page Zreomski~ 1 Keenan Street Mona Vale NSW 2103 Tel: Fax office@pittwaterparish.org website:

2 Third Sunday of Lent 3rd & 4th 2018 We Pray for Deceased Anniversary from Our Schools DATES for your DIARY Vinnies Named Donation Partner of NSW Government s Return & Earn Scheme The St Vincent de Paul Society NSW is proud to be selected as one of the initial donation partners of the NSW Government s Return & Earn Scheme, a recycling program currently being established at over 500 locations across NSW. St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO, Jack de Groot says, Vinnies is extremely grateful and excited to be one of the initial donation partners for the NSW Government s Return & Earn Scheme. The initiative will raise important funds to assist Vinnies in providing a helping hand to those Australians experiencing disadvantage and homelessness in our communities. Mr de Groot explains that all funds donated to Vinnies by consumers using the Reverse Vending Machines will be used to help run Vinnies accommodation and support services, such as counselling and case management, for vulnerable and disadvantaged people. This initial donation campaign will run over the next three months, a time that we know will see more and more Australians turn to Vinnies for assistance. This is traditionally a very tough period for families, with Christmas, end of year bills, and back to school costs all mounting up. Homelessness is also on the rise. We know that 105,000 people are experiencing homelessness in Australia today, and, of these, 17,000 are children younger than 12 years old. It is shocking that between July 2016 to 2017, almost 60 per cent of people assisted by Vinnies were in housing stress, where their rent takes up more than 30 per cent of their income, said Mr de Groot. Mr de Groot encouraged Australians to participate in the Return & Earn Scheme not only to benefit the environment, but to also help our communities and neighbours in need. If Australians can use the opportunity to engage with the scheme and generously donate their refund to Vinnies, they can be confident that it will make an enormous difference to those people living at the margins of our society. For more information on the Return & Earn Scheme, please visit: return-and-earn For the needy, help is available by contacting the Brookvale Centre during business hours. Paul Callachor John Murphy Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them O Lord, And Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them. May they Rest in Peace. Amen. May Their Souls And The Souls Of The Faithful Departed, Through The Mercy Of God, Rest In Peace. Amen. The image, which will be central to the celebration and prayerful discernment of local Australian communities throughout the Year of Youth, was unveiled at the recent Youth Festival. The image tells the story of young people in the current landscape of our Australian Church as they journey toward Christ. It is a story of rich diversity and great joy, said Malcolm Hart, Director of the Australian Catholic Bishop Conference s Office for Youth. Ms Gorey was identified by the Australian Catholic Youth Council for her use of vibrant colour which depicts youthfulness and the joy that is central to the spiritual focus of the Year of Youth. Christ our Joy is rich in symbolism, tradition and meaning. It depicts the diversity of young people through the use of varied colour, shaped and sized dots. Some are gathered in communities, others more isolated. Some are closer to God or the cross, others further away. The central figures are Jesus and Mary against a cross. They point to the Resurrection as the source of our Joy. Jesus extends a hand toward his mother Mary, and with her to the Church; with his other hand, he points them all to his Father-God. Everyone will see, feel and sense the painting differently. Each is valued as our stories and experiences are different, Ms Gorey said. It is hoped that all communities of faith will find inspiration in this image as they respond to the invitation to a Year of Youth.

5 Third Sunday of Lent 3rd & 4th 2018 Year of Youth Pilgrim Cross A Catholic Youth Broken Bay (CYBB) Pilgrim Cross has been commissioned by Bishop Peter to travel the Diocese and be hosted by each parish. In November 2017, at the commencement of the Year of Youth, Bishop Peter formally handed over the CYBB Pilgrim Cross to the young people of Broken Bay. This Cross has been entrusted to young people to carry around the Diocese throughout the Year of Youth and it will become a permanent feature of CYBB events into the future. Pittwater Parish will be hosting the Cross from the 10th to the 24th of. This is a great opportunity to engage and acknowledge the young people in our community and to reach out to those who are perhaps less connected to our parish. During it s stay, the Cross will visit the schools within the parish and the Year of Youth prayer will be said during masses. 100% SOUL Youth Nights! For Year 10+. Every Thursday night from 7-9 pm in the Sacred Heart Church, Parish Centre, Mona Vale. Existing and new members welcome. Come along with your friends or make some new ones over some snacks, games and exploration of our faith. The Story behind the Year of Youth Cross In October 2017, I was asked to make a Cross for the young people of the Diocese of Broken Bay. From insights gained in various youth ministry, music ministry and religious education roles in the Diocese over 25 years, I prepared a design and took up my latest ministry of building things. BY ANDREW INTRONA During World Youth Day 2008, I had the privilege to travel with the WYD Cross and Icon through both Broken Bay and Sandhurst Dioceses. At every event I was struck by how young people related to the WYD cross as they touched and carried it. The Cross became a tangible expression of their faith and the stories of the millions of people who carried it around the world helped them to understand that they were part of a family that was wider than their schools and local parishes. I designed the Broken Bay Year of Youth Cross to be a simple contemporary design hoping that the richness of faith expression young people have will complement it. It was made from Tasmanian Oak, a eucalypt tree that grows in the south-east parts of Australia. It was chosen to represent the local Australian Church with its light colour representing the Light of Christ. This idea ties strongly to the symbolism used in our Diocese of the lighthouse. The timber has a range of grain structures and colours representing the many expressions of faith in the Diocese. On sharing photos of the cross with Bishop Peter, he asked if something could be added to signify the Crucified Christ. An abstract design was added using Purple Heart timber. This is a timber that comes from Central and South America, incidentally the location for the next WYD. This timber was chosen to represent the contribution and richness of people from all over the world to our local faith community. The colour represents mourning, pain and the crucifixion as well as the idea that Jesus was Priest, Prophet and King. Oil has been used as a finish to remind us of the oil used at baptism and anointing. The oil provides strength and protects the timber while bringing out the character of the wood. The stand for the Cross was made from discarded timber projects saved from a school skip bin. Despite being imperfect this timber now plays an important role in supporting the Cross. Despite all our flaws we are called to live faith filled lives, doing the work of Christ today. The cross is able to be taken apart in pieces to make transportation easier for its journey across Broken Bay in the Year of Youth. At its presentation during Praisefest in November and subsequent travels during ACYF, the way the Year of Youth Cross has been embraced by the young people of our Diocese is a blessing. I hope that it will inspire those who carry it in the future. 6 Third Sunday of Lent 3rd & 4th 2018 The Living Word First Reading Ex 20:1-17 A reading from the book of Exodus The Law was given through Moses. God spoke all these words. He said, I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no gods except me. You shall not make yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything in heaven or on earth beneath or in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God and I punish the father s fault in the sons, the grandsons, and the great-grandsons of those who hate me; but I show kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not utter the name of the Lord your God to misuse it, for the Lord will not leave unpunished the man who utters his name to misuse it. Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath for the Lord your God. You shall do no work on that day, neither you nor your son nor your daughter nor your servants, men or women, not your animals nor the stranger who lives with you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that these hold, but on the seventh day he rested; that is why the Lord has blessed the sabbath day and made it sacred. Honour your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God has given to you. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. You shall not covet your neighbour s house. You shall not covet your neighbour s wife, or his servant, man or woman, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is his. The word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 18:8-11. R. Jn 6:68 (R.) Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul. The rule of the Lord is to be trusted, it gives wisdom to the simple. (R) The precepts of the Lord are right, they gladden the heart. The command of the Lord is clear, it gives light to the eyes. (R) The fear of the Lord is holy, abiding for ever. The decrees of the Lord are truth and all of them just. (R) They are more to be desired than gold, than the purest of gold and sweeter are they than honey, than honey from the comb. (R) Second Reading 1 Cor 1:22-25 A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians We are preaching a crucified Christ, a scandal to many, but to those who have been called, the wisdom of God. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, here are we preaching a crucified Christ; to the Jews an obstacle that they cannot get over, to the pagans madness, but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is the power and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. The word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Jn 3:16 Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! God loved the world so much, he gave us his only Son, that all who believe in him might have eternal life. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Gospel Jn 2:13-25 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up. Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money changers coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father s house into a market. Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: Zeal for your house will devour me. The Jews intervened and said, What sign can you show us to justify what you have done? Jesus answered, Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews replied, It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary: are you going to raise it up in three days? But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the words he had said. During his stay in Jerusalem for the Passover many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he gave, but Jesus knew them all and did not trust himself to them; he never needed evidence about any man; he could tell what a man had in him. The Gospel of the Lord REFLECTION by Dianne Bergant CSS Israel believed that the temple was built over the navel of the universe, the axis mundi, that spot where the world above and the world below met the world of history, thus enabling the three worlds to communicate. When Jesus called himself the new temple, he was claiming to be the centre of the universe, the spot where three-way cosmic communication occurs, the presence of God in the midst of the community. When we accept him in faith, we are accepting these claims. We may profess this belief, but do our lives reflect it? Although some consider the law a rigid set of precepts, it is really more a collection of directives that have grown out of the experience of life. To say that Jesus is the wisdom of God means that God s wisdom is made known in him and that he is the way that points to God. While laws often embody distinctive cultural values or customs, as wisdom of God, Jesus crosses cultural boundaries and breaks down cultural distinctions. As the wisdom of God, Jesus fulfils the expectations of any and all codes of law. Both the law and the temple witness to the power of God in the lives of believers. However, both institutions pale in the light of Jesus who is identified as the power of God. This divine power is not revealed in lofty precepts or in magnificent stones, but rather in the broken and pierced body of Jesus Christ. How willing are we to accept him?
