The outer circle of Hebrew text quotes Leviticus 23:43, where the purpose of the festival is stated, followed by comments of Rabbis Eliezer and Aqiba about the character of the booths themselves, abbreviated from the Babylonian Talmud (Sukkah 11b). The inner circle of Hebrew text quotes from Zechariah 14:1-21, which is the Haftarah lection (from the scriptural Prophets) prescribed for the first day of the Sukkot And the LORD shall be king over all the earth; in that day there shall be one LORD with one name (NJPSV). Renowned for his images of Israel and Jerusalem landscapes, as well as creating visual chronicles of the historic saga of the Jewish people, Avner Moriah s work is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Israel Museum, the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., among others.
