1 EVANSVILLE Lodge #64 F&AM On the Square F r o m t h e E a s t Dallas Booth, Worshipful Master June Anno Domini 2010 The Worshipful Dallas Booth Master of the Lodge The first quarter of 2010 has come and gone with some excellent work completed by Evansville #64. The One Day Class has come and gone with several new Master Masons being raised. Our 64 Team delivered sterling work for the FC and pitched in for the MM with the Best of the Best, the East Central Ritualist Team. You wouldn t have known who was who! You made us all very proud. Thanks to Jim Jones, PM, for arranging the workers in the quarry for that day. But we still have much work ahead of us and everyone needs to pitch in and keep doing our best to serve the Lodge and the Brethren. Our standing committees are still working hard to get the word out about the great work Freemasonry does to render relief and charity to those in need in our communities and around the globe. We have recently taken a collection for our brothers in Haiti. Our Muscular Dystrophy Lock Up was another great success! Thanks to all who participated at Biaggi s. (See article and pictures in this newsletter.) The Dream Center dinners are still a focal point of our outreach, thanks to Rex Goodman, PM, Chairman, Ken Roy, Procurement Officer and Jim Jones, PM and we can always use your helping hands there. ShrinersFest is coming up May 21 st and we will be hosting our IdentiKids with Brother Ken Roy and his gang. Let s show up and give a hand with these worthy causes. We need to congratulate one of our own, as Bill Reiners has been appointed to Grand Line and will no doubt be Grand Master of Indiana before he completes his Masonic Journey. With Anthony Yardé, SW, and Nathan Bland, JW, I congratulate Bill on this most auspicious appointment and wish him the very best of everything! If you have not been to Lodge lately you need to stop in and get reinvolved; if you have been coming to lodge, you know that your time is well spent in assisting new candidates journey from darkness to light. I am always in great awe over the special attention this Lodge gives to ritual, outreach, assistance, care of finances and concern for one another. When we consider the work ahead for our Lodge, I am confident that we will rise to each challenge afresh. I cannot overestimate the strength of our unity and the zeal for which we go about our Masonic labors. This is why being Senior Warden for #64 is not only a privilege but also a joy. I have included this poem seen to your left, as a beautiful reminder of our Masonic obligation to help, encourage and give spiritual assistance to each brother, but especially newly obligated ones. If there is anything I can do to help you, Brothers, please do not hesitate to call upon me. With God s help, I shall have the courage and fortitude to lend that succor for which you have asked. 3 From the South Nathan Bland Junior Warden Greetings from the South! I would like to thank the brothers of Evansville 64 for electing me as their Junior Warden. It is truly an honor to serve all of you. I look forward to assisting W.M. Dallas Booth and S.W. Anthony Yardé, as well as working with all the Officers in service to the brothers of this great Lodge. We are witnessing near incredible growth. Many new brothers have been raised and others are yet under their mentors guidance, preparing for their final degree. You might want to stop and congratulate these newly obligated brethren next time you see them. Encouragement is a necessary key to craft development and getting involved means bringing new men to Light. Please join us for refreshments and fellowship before our stated meetings, and come witness the outstanding ritual performed by your officers at any degree. West Australian Craftsman Printed in the South Dakota Masonic Messenger, Feb Extracted from the Southern California Research Lodge 'Fraternal Review', May 2004 A Moment of Masonic History It is acknowledged that the Regius Manuscript held in the British Museum is the oldest genuine record of Masonic relevance and was written in c. A.D Its author was probably a priest. This manuscript takes the form of an historical and instructional poem. Interestingly, the phrase So Mote it be is first quoted from this text. Next, it is important to consider the Cooke Manuscript (also in the British Museum) written by a Speculative mason in A. D This is an important document because many current Masonic usages (e.g., the Constitutions written by Anderson in 1723) have obviously borrowed heavily from its content, which includes reference to the seven Liberal Arts and Sciences and the building of Solomon s Temple. There are approximately 100 manuscripts, collectively known as the Old Charges, grouped together in four families held by various museums worldwide.

4 Secretary s Memo William A. Reiners, PM, 33 As Secretary of your Lodge, I now ask all brothers who are not current with their dues to become so as soon as possible. If you received a remission of dues last year, and your financial, medical or other condition has not changed, please contact me so that a remission of dues can be arranged for If you paid your dues last year but have a problem this year, you also need to contact me very soon. The formal letters for suspension for non-payment of dues will be going out in early May, so please save your Lodge the cost and pay or contact us today. My contact information: Phone: , pm6406@insightbb.com, mailing address: 2833 Bailey Lane, Evansville IN While I have enjoyed being Secretary of the Lodge, and I had hoped I could serve in that position for several years, I received an appoint from our current Deputy Grand Master, Ken Willis, to join the Grand Lodge line as Junior Grand Deacon. Because of travel and other requirements of the office, I do not feel that I can perform the secretary s job as required. My resignation will become effective at the June stated meeting. The election of a new secretary will be held at the May 10 th Stated Meeting. I will be available to the new secretary to aid in the transfer of duties in an efficient manner. I would like to thank all of the brothers who have helped me, not only as secretary but also as a lodge line officer and Master of this great Lodge. I know that my new position is just as much an honor to Evansville Lodge #64 as it is to me. This Lodge has always been on the cutting edge of new programs; this includes programs in the community to raise public awareness of Freemasonry through the Child ID Program, Dream Center dinners, Habitat for Humanity and other help to numerous organizations in the Evansville area. Our Lodge s support of Grand Lodge activities and programs such as the Ritualist Program under Jim Jones, PM, and our Lodge s leadership and organization of the Southern Indiana One Day Classes also should be noted. I know that over the next few years, I will again need to call on your help, and I am sure that, as in the past, it will be given in abundance. Evansville Lodge No. 64 has worked hard to rise to this challenge. For several years we have launched head-long into charities and community outreach programs that have had proactively impacted people s lives. One such organization is MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). Most of us have heard of the "Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon" that helps support patients who have muscular dystrophy, affectionately called "Jerry's Kids." Besides the telethon, MDA raises money by holding events such as lockups. For a lockup, people come and voluntarily get put in "prison." The volunteers then solicit their family and friends to send money to bail out the prisoner. The proceeds go to the local MDA. This is a great way to get involved because MDA organizers always need help registering, photographing and sorting the people and information coming in. On April 14th, Evansville Lodge No. 64 did its part with the annual MDA lockup. We had people at every station and processed over 100 people into the make-shift jail. We raised lots of money for "Jerry's Kids." We even had the opportunity to talk about Freemasonry with some men who were interested in our fraternity. Throw in a free lunch, and I'd say we had a very good day. Brotherly love is one of our most basic tenets. Without it, we would be in perpetual darkness. Giving back to the community is one way to show the world that Freemasons are not selfish people. A balance of Masonic and non-masonic philanthropies could be just the spark to interest a good man in our fraternity. On a certain level, we could view this community involvement as an investment in the fraternity s future!

6 R i c h a r d S c h n a k e n b u r g, P M, 3 3 H o n o r e d b y H a d i T e m p l e Worshipful Brother Richard Schnakenburg, Spring 2010 Class Honoree, was born and raised in Evansville, IN. He graduated from Bosse High School in Illustrious Schnakenburg attended Purdue University and was awarded a degree in engineering. He retired from Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Company in 1987, as Director of Systems Engineering. He served the American Institute of Electrical Engineers as Indiana Subsection Chairman from Richard is a veteran of World War II and proudly served in China in the 3101 st Signal Services Corps. Raised in Saint Lucas United Church of Christ, he is a 50-plus-year member of Central United Methodist Church and its FaHaLo Sunday School class. He has been an active leader in the Combined United Church of Christ/United Methodist Church Men s Lenten Breakfast at Scottish Rite Valley of Evansville for many years. The late Patricia Weiss and he were married for 54 years and have three children: David (wife Sherri), Linda Trible (husband Mike) and Karen Schnakenburg. Dick is proud of his grandchildren, John Schnakenburg (wife Debra), Jennifer Emsweller (husband Chad), Brian Schnakenburg and his six great-grandchildren. Dick was raised a Master Mason on September 9, 1946, and served as Master of Evansville Lodge #64 in He received his 50-Year Membership Award from the same lodge in He was awarded the Lodge 64 Masters Award, served on the Lodge Development Committee, served the Grand Lodge as Area Representative and is an honorary member of Beulah Lodge #578 in Mount Vernon, IN. Dick was created and proclaimed a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret in December 1957, and served as Commander-in-Chief of the Consistory of the Valley of Evansville Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite from In 1980 in Cleveland, OH, The Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite -Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, bestowed upon him the honor of becoming a Sovereign Grand Inspector General (33 ). Richard is a member of the Board of Directors of the Evansville 32 Masonic Learning Center for Children and has served as its chairman. He was active in the Walk for Dyslexia and served several years as chairman. In 1997, he received the Double Eagle Award and in 2007, Illustrious Brother Schnakenburg received his 50-Year Membership Award from The Supreme Council. On November 3, 1962, Dick was proclaimed to be of noble birth and thus be came a member of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine Oasis of Evansville, Hadi Temple. Soon afterward, he joined the Color Guard and served as its captain in 1967 and also served as Director and Sergeant for several years. He is the recipient of the prestigious Ditzer Award (1978) and was awarded a Life Membership in the Color Guard in This noble served as President of the Uniformed Bodies in 1988, and a member of the Temple Budget and Finance Committee for several years. Richard has worked on the Circus Reserve Seat Ticket Committee since his retirement and has qualified for the Circus VIP sales program every year for over four decades. In 1976, he was a participant in the Color Guard tribute to our nation s bicentennial, organizing a Spirit of 76 fife and drum line. He also participated in the presentation of the Colors at a benefit game honoring the University of Evansville basketball team which perished in a tragic airplane crash in Among this distinguished brother s memberships is the High Twelve International (Past President), Royal Order of Jesters and Swords of Bunker Hill.

7 From the Chaplain Timothy Kuykendall Report Filed 5/2/2010: Before leaving town, I was able to make a visit to Deaconess Heart Hospital to check up on Ron Tepe. The surgery was a success. Other than lower-than-average kidney function this morning, Ron is healing nicely. He could have had a little more color in his face and a little less glaze in the eye for my taste, but the doctors say he's doing well. Brother Tepe expects to be released on Monday with approximately three months of recovery. I was able to get him and his family laughing a little while I was there, which, of course, caused some discomfort in his chest drainage tube. After a wince and a stretch, his smile was back. He sends his appreciation for the gift of the Evansville Lodge #64 blanket, and added that it should be about a month before he could return to Lodge. I told him I'd drive if he wanted to attend the Fellow Craft tomorrow night. With a grin, he answered, "No, thanks." "Toleration, holding that every other man has the same right to his opinion and faith that we have to ours; and liberality, holding that as no human being can with certainty say, in the clash and conflict of hostile faiths and creeds, what is truth, or that he is surely in possession of it, so every one should feel that it is quite possible that another equally honest and sincere with himself, and yet holding the contrary opinion, may himself be in possession of the truth."
