1 WELCOME TO WORSHIP! June 19, 2016 Father s Day 10:45am Contemporary Worship A Minister of Christ Prays for the Family of God! We are grateful God led you to join us today! We pray that you are blessed, strengthened, and uplifted by your time of worship with us. Grace and peace be yours n abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus out Lord. ~ 2 Peter 1:2 For information in nursery, cry room and other needs during worship, please see the back of the worship bulletin. Please bring a salad or side to share and mark bowls and lids. o Pastor Belter Returned Call Next call meeting probably not until July 17. o Coming in July Counterfeit Gods a series that will allow God to work on our hearts to weed out other loyalties and replace it with a deeper love and appreciation for him as the TRUE GOD who fills all the needs we inadvertently ask other gods in our lives to fill. o OTHER: o OTHER: WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD [SLIDE: HELLO] WL: Happy Father s Day! Being a Dad is a wonderful calling and privilege. To be entrusted with young lives to influence is both a privilege and a tremendous responsibility. We all have different experiences with our earthly dads. We all have different experiences as we carry out the role of dad. I know one of the things that is on my mind often is praying for my girls. I pray for their hearts to remain close to Jesus. I pray that I am a blessing to them and don t mess things up. I pray for their future spouses that God is raising them in a Christian home today. In our denomination we don t call church leaders Father but in many regards our pastors serve as Dad to the congregation. They are called to watch over the family and guide it, influence it for the Lord Jesus. Many tasks fill their time, but one that is critical is praying for the family God calls them to serve. Pastor Dave last week mentioned in the video that when he came to Good Shepherd he saw it as a teenage congregation. We know teens need lots of prayers! I know Pastor Dave has carried this congregation on his heart for 40 years in the times of joy and the times of challenge committing all things to the Lord in prayer. As he finishes his ministry among us, he today continues that theme as a minister who has and will 1

2 pray for this congregation and for us as a congregation to continue to pray for him and Jane as them move to a new season of life as well that God would continue to hold and guide us deeper into his word of Truth and living out the same. Enjoy today the blessing of worship as once again we gather in the name of Jesus, our God, our Rock, our King forever. We don t become children of the promise on our own. These things are gifts of God s love to us. He knew we could reject them. He knew we could ignore him, but compelled by his great love for us he reaches down to bring us into his family of faith. This morning God s love and forgiveness is going to be given to Haddie Dose and bring her into his family through the gift of faith given in baptism. She too will have the privilege to call God her Father. As we anticipate celebrating the baptism of Haddie, let s take a moment to be reminded of the wonderful gift of baptism and its significance in our lives, not just years ago, but today. M: As Jesus was finishing his time on earth, he commanded Baptism when he said to his followers: Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew that all of us are born into this world with a deep need for Baptism. From our parents we inherit a sinful nature; we are without true fear of God and true faith in God and are condemned to eternal death. He knew that no matter how many things we did for him, we could never do enough to pay for our sins. But Jesus in his love took a huge risk for us by giving his life on the cross to take away our sins. At our baptisms he cleans us from all our sins, covers us with the robe of his righteousness and begins in us a new life of faith. As a result, we have power over our sinful nature and we do not have to give in to sin any longer. However, we know that we as children and adult still sin daily. We need the power and promise of baptism every day. We need the power of baptism every day to say no to sin, turn from our sin and receive God s forgiveness. We need the promise of baptism to daily live as God s child, reflecting his purity and his rightness always. M: Haddie is very little and will need her mom and dad Craig and Dana to explain and teach her about her baptism. We perhaps have forgotten our baptism and the significance of it. The waters of baptism drown our sinful nature. So before we baptize Haddie, I invite the congregation to reflect, with me, on how our sinful nature has shown up this week. How has it affected my thoughts toward sin anger hatred mean thoughts doubts losing focus on God. How has my sinful nature affected my words? not loving, sarcastic, judgmental, cutting, sharp? How has my sinful nature affected my actions? Were they self-centered? Dishonest? Mean? Less than your best? As you realize the impact of your sinful nature, it s no wonder we 3

4 need baptism to drown the sin, the guilt and the condemnation. We deserve God s punishment, but trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, we pray, Lord have mercy on me a sinner. Let s say that together: [SLIDE] C: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. [SLIDE: Baptism] M: The power and promise of baptism are amazing. Even though we will not baptize everyone again this morning, God, our heavenly Father, promises you that because he gave you Jesus and connected you to him through baptism, your sins are paid for. The waters of baptism have washed them away. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, the same Father, Son and Holy Spirit who claimed you as his dear child at your own at baptism. The Rite of Baptism continues at the font. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM M: Now it s Haddie s turn for God to adopt her into his family through the amazing power of the name of the Triune God, and promise through a little waters. In obedience to the command of our Lord and trusting in his promise, you have brought this child to be baptized. Jesus told us: Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. You trust that in Baptism that God grants the new life of forgiveness, joy, and peace to little children. By the power of God s Word, this gracious water of life washes away sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe. M: Haddie Marion Dose, Receive the sign of the cross on the head and heart to mark you as a redeemed child of Christ. The minister applies water to each of those present for Baptism as he says: Haddie Marion Dose, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Almighty God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you are born again and made a dear child of your Father in heaven. Welcome to God s Family, Haddie! May God strengthen you to live in your baptismal grace all the days of your life. Peace be with you. EXHORTATION M: Brothers and sisters in Christ, staying connected to Jesus all our lives is a daily challenges. Therefore God puts around us Christian parents, sponsors and a Christian congregation to assist in encouraging Haddie in her new faith and teaching her all the things Jesus taught. Christian love therefore urges all of us, especially parents and sponsors, to assist in whatever manner possible so that Haddie may remain a child of God until her death. If you are willing to carry out this responsibility, then answer: Yes, as God gives me strength. 4

Merciful Father in heaven, we thank you for loving us and connecting us to the blessing of Baptism by which you offer and grant the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Help us to regard our baptisms as the robe of righteousness we are to wear all the days of our lives. Look with special favor on Haddie and grant her a rich measure of your Spirit that she may grow in faith and godly living. Make us willing to carry out our responsibilities to those who have been baptized, so that all of us may finally come to the blessed joys of heaven, through Jesus our Lord. And all God s Children said, Amen. TRANSITION: Baptism is a gift that brings new life and salvation to our lives. It is a starting point of faith which establishes us on Christ, our Savior, our Solid Rock. As we sing this next song let it be a reminder to all of us to build our hope, our lives on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness! What comfort personally and as a congregation! First Lesson: Jeremiah 29: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you, declares the LORD, and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile. TRANSITION (WL): What a promise connected with prayer done in Jesus name God hears and answers. Second Lesson: John 16:23b Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. 25 Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father. 29 Then Jesus disciples said, Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God. 6

7 TRANSITION (WL): One thing we continue to ask in Jesus name is that he would continue to use us as part of his work to build his kingdom. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. In obedience to the Lord s command, you have been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. You have been taught the precious truths of the Christian faith as confessed by the Evangelical Lutheran Church. You know what God has given you by his grace and what he expects of you as his dear child. You now have the privilege of receiving the Lord s body and blood in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. P: Do you this day, in the presence of God and of this congregation, acknowledge that in Baptism, God gave you forgiveness of sins, life and salvation? C: I do. P: Do you reject the devil along with all his lies and empty promises? C: I do. P: Do you believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit? All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. P: Do you believe all the books of the Bible to be the inspired Word of God? C: I do. P: Do you believe that the teaching of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, as you have learned to know it from Luther s Small Catechism, is faithful and true to the Word of God? C: I do. P: Do you intend to continue steadfast in this teaching and to endure all things, even death, rather than fall away from it? 10

Enable him to bring forth the fruits of faith and to continue steadfast and victorious until the day comes when all who have fought the good fight of faith shall receive the crown of righteousness, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. TRANSITION: As we welcome new individuals to our Good Shepherd family, one of the blessings we share as we profess a common faith is to join together in receiving the blessing of the Lord s Supper as a family of believers. As we celebrate the Lord s Supper, we remember our deep need for forgiveness. We rejoice that Jesus is present in his body and blood and his promise is sure that he gave his body and shed his blood so we might have full certainty our sins are forgiven. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world 11

12 WE CELEBRATE AT THE TABLE OF GOD Words of Institution (WL): Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always.
