Time is needed talk things over, embrace leisurely, share plans, listen one or gaze in each or s eyes, appreciate one anor build a stronger relationship. Pope Francis ( 224) Though grounded in kerygma gospel, Pope Francis exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, is not intended be a work ology, so much as a spur practical pasral reforms both within greater institutional Church within domestic Church, i.e., family. Like Second Vatican Council, from which he derives his inspiration, Francis seeks read signs times, providing not universal ological principles but flexible advice, adaptable particular pasral situations, depending on communities involved. n Chapter Six Amoris Laetitia, Pope makes this intention clear: The dialogue that ok place during Synod raised need for new pasral methods. attempt mention some se in a very general way. Different communities have devise more practical effective initiatives that respect both Church s teaching local problems needs ( 199). This approach fering pasral guidelines that are neir exhaustive nor exclusive, but are presented only in a very general way, shows revolutionary quality Francis papacy, for it reverses more than twenty years precedent. Under John Paul Benedict XV, authority had been increasingly centralized around papal fice various Vatican congregations. Here, however, ust as was done in structure Synod itself, Francis seeks elevate importance particular churches i.e., diocese, regions, etc. spur a reform that be guided implemented not by papal authority but by engagement People God. The guidance fered in Chapter Six emerges from radical idea that Christian families, by grace sacrament matrimony, are principal agents family aposlate ( 200), that role institutional Church is, refore, not one governance control, but Enabling families take up ir role as active agents family aposlate ( 200). Far from tradition pay, pray, obey, Christian families are fundamental ministers Gospel family ( 201), who must be supported by ir parishes by teaching hierarchical Church, but who have a preeminent unique role in engagement civil society in carrying out mission Christ in world. With this in mind, parishes must provide training pasral care families that enhances ability lay women men carry out ir ministry. Noting broad oriental tradition a married clergy ( 202), Francis calls for formation priests, deacons, religious men women as well as lay leaders who can assist families enable m deal with complex problems that confront m ( 202). n this context, Pope criticizes merely doctrinal formation ( 203) given priests in matters family life, proposing radical idea that t is important for families be part seminary process priestly life, since y help... keep m well grounded in reality ( 203). n

3 concluding this section, Francis notes how such reforms priestly formation pasral structures are especially important in wake sinful sexual abuse crisis that has so harmed Church ( 204). No longer can Church approach marriage family life by keeping her ministers isolated in abstraction dogma; rar called by crisis in rebirth we must all engage reality family life, supporting it through various vocations given Church: i.e., lay, religious, ordained. The support for family life involves more, however, than retraining vowed ordained for greater understing family life. t also requires evangelization all families from very beginning ir life ger. So it is that Amoris Laetitia calls for a renewal renovation formation, not ust ministers, but all Christians walking path family life: i.e., engaged, recently married, all those couples growing as spouses parents. While, at each se stages, re may be different needs dems, different challenges graces, all m are grounded in vocation love, all require more than mere ological principles: i.e., all require practical, pasral support entire faith community Church as family families ( 87). Challenging what has become norm for many Catholic communities, Francis outlines a lifelong formation for family life, calls parishes diocese begin work discerning its shape structure. n speaking issues such as marriage preparation family support, Francis again shows pasral experience which informs his entire papacy. n outlining marriage preparation, for example, he encourages uniting individual meetings with something resembling Rite Christian nitiation Adults (RCA), by which marriage preparation can involve whole community, through which marriage may be seen in context or sacraments initiation (e.g., baptism Eucharist) ( 206). At same time, Francis avoids particular matters content, emphasizing, instead, a need guide couple in deeper commitment: Quality is more important than quantity, priority should be given along with a renewed proclamation kerygma an attractive helpful presentation information that can help couples live rest ir lives ger with great courage generosity ( 207). For Pope Francis, who ust last week stirred headlines by suggesting that many people enter marriage without requisite understing consent, Church is called create a pedagogy love ( 211), which moves beyond wedding in whole life a couple. Any marriage preparation, refore, must encourage [couples] discuss what each expects from marriage, what y underst by love commitment, what each wants from or what kind life y would like build ger...the decision marry should never be encouraged unless couple has discerned deeper reasons that endure a genuine stable commitment ( 209). Beyond marriage preparation, Amoris Laetitia also calls for support newly married, as y learn set aside all illusions accept or as he or she actually is: an unfinished product, needing grow, a work in progress ( 218). Here again, one hears pasr s voice, as Francis calls couples avoid constant criticism one anor ( 218), foster hope through compassionate dialogue loving compromise. n this way y grow deepen in ir relationship, keeping it new, even as it grows older: At each new stage married life, re is a need sit down renegotiate agreements, so that re be no winners losers, but rar two winners ( 220). Francis returns here mes Chapter Four, noting that couples need grow ger change with each or through vehicle genuine open conversation, in belief that love is great ol growth transformation: n life married couples, even at difficult moments, one person can always surprise or, new doors can open for ir relationship, as if y were meeting for first time. At every stage, y can keep forming one anor. Love makes each wait for or with patience a craftsman, a patience which comes from God ( 221). t is role parish, especially, help foster this patience support couples in this growth, fer opportunities where experienced couples can help younger couples, with eventual cooperation associations, ecclesial movements, new communities ( 223). Throughout Amoris Laetitia, Francis fers a new model Church its care families. Decentralizing authority deemphasizing dogmatic ideals, Pope calls whole Church not ust ministerial pressionals experiment innovate, try what works help families thrive, in a culture that ten acts against family life. n Chapter Six, Francis provides encouragement an experienced voice, suggesting that parishes use various means reach people: meetings couples living in same neighborhood; brief retreats for couples; talks by experts on concrete issues facing families; marriage counseling; home missionaries who help couples discuss ir difficulties desires; social services dealing with family problems like addiction, infidelity, domestic violence; programs spiritual growth; workshops for parents with troubled children; family meetings. The parish fice should be prepared deal helpfully sensitively with family needs, be able make referrals, when necessary those who can help ( 229). Though challenging, even large parishes, this call suggests importance family life, how much Francis believes Church must develop means help it flourish. As he warns, We can no longer be like a facry, churning out courses that for most part are poorly attended ( 230).
