Nominations for Consideration by the 203 rd Annual Convention Diocesan Council Clergy Order (Vote for 2) THE REV. TYRONE FOWLKES RESIDENCE: Raleigh POSITION: Rector, St.Mark s, Raleigh NOMINATOR: The Rev. Jemonde Taylor Both my personal and professional mission is about gathering diverse people together in an environment of empowerment guiding them in the discovery of their own gifts so they can do their best work. My strongest contribution is in providing thought-leadership and mobilizing creative teams to further the mission of the Church. During my 10 years of priesthood, along with a background in social work and the arts, I have served on the board of directors of national and diocesan committees and coalitions as well as local community organizations serving poor and marginalized communities. My desire to serve on the Diocesan Council is rooted in my willingness to assist in coordinating and administering our financial affairs and furthering our shared diocesan priorities under the vison and direction of our bishops as Episcopalians in North Carolina. THE REV. LINDA NYE RESIDENCE: Eden POSITION: Rector, Church of the Epiphany, Eden NOMINATOR: Rob Martin I ve been rector of the Church of the Epiphany, Eden for nine years. Prior to that, I served in the Diocese of Western North Carolina. I m serving a second term on the diocesan Fair Share Appeals Board, and was a legislative aide at the 79 th General Convention. I am very interested in the programs and ministries of our diocese. I m involved in my community, serving on the boards of directors of Hospice of Rockingham County, Aging, Disability and Transit Services, and Eden Rotary Club. I m active in an ecumenical clergy group whose focus is racial equity and healing, as well as other ecumenical ministries, and am part of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Task Force and Chamber of Commerce. I would be honored to serve on the Diocesan Council, working closely with the ministry, financial and programatic priorities of our diocese. 1
Diocesan Council Clergy Order, Cont d (Vote for 2) THE REV. MIRIAM SAXON RESIDENCE: Haw River POSITION: Vicar, St. Andrew s, Haw River NOMINATOR: The Rev. Stephanie Yancy I bring a personal passion for the ministry we do both within our diocese and in the wider church, and I care deeply that our diocese is well administered for the benefit of every parish and mission. As the vicar of a small mission, I believe in representation from such smaller churches in the administration of our diocese. I have served one term on Diocesan Council ( ) and I am completing my final year as the chair (and co-chair in 2018) of the Commission on Ministry for the Diaconate. I currently serve on the Botswana Companion Link Committee and co-led, with Leon Spencer, the 2016 and 2018 pilgrimages to Botswana. Diocesan Council Lay Order (Vote for 3) ALICE FREEMAN RESIDENCE: Wilson County CHURCH: St. Mark s, Wilson NOMINATOR: Mavis Edmundson As a member of Diocesan Council, I currently serve as co-chair of the outreach department, whose mission is to assist committees and agencies of the diocese to carry out their specified and identified missions, exercising good stewardship and accountability. I am a five-time deputy to General Convention and was recently elected to the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church. My appointment and election to various committees in the church and the diocese has allowed me, at times, to be that voice that is sometimes not heard. I am passionate about small and struggling churches and missions. I believe that by building relationships and opening up to new ideas and to new ways of being church and mission, small churches and missions can do more than just survive; they can thrive and minister to themselves, as well as their neighbors whoever and wherever they are. 2 GARLAND HOMES RESIDENCE: Wilson CHURCH: St. Timothy s, Wilson NOMINATOR: The Rev. Marty Stebbins Garland is a senior financial advisor with the Homes Hill group at Merrill Lynch. He has over 38 years of experience managing financial relationships. Garland is a lifelong Episcopalian with a long history of leadership at St. Timothy s, Wilson, including being the senior warden during a change of rector. He is currently a licensed lay reader as well as a licensed ay Eucharistic Minister. Other leadership roles include past president of Preservation of Wilson and current national chair of UNC Parents Council. He is also a partner in Grapenuts. He and his wife, Sandra, have three adult children and reside in Wilson.
Diocesan Council Lay Order, Cont d (Vote for 3) RONALD SIGRIST RESIDENCE: Kernersville CHURCH: St. Anne s, Winston-Salem NOMINATOR: The Rev. Ginny Wilder I have been a member of St. Anne s Episcopal Church for 33 years and have served four terms on the vestry, including two terms as senior warden. I am familiar with the financial information that must be monitored and understood to administer a church successfully. I am also aware of the many day-to-day issues and problems that arise during church administration. I would like to use the skills and experiences that I gained during my church service to serve the Diocese on the Diocesan Council. I really enjoy such service and am retired so I can devote the time needed for service. Experiences that helped prepare me for Diocesan Council service. 1. I served on the diocesan Stewardship Committee in the past. 2. I have been an Education for Ministry mentor for over 20 years. 3. I have been a Diocesan Convention delegate for a number of years. GILBERT SMALL RESIDENCE: Concord CHURCH: All Saints, Concord NOMINATOR: The Rev. L.J. Cox Treasurer: Responsible for All Saints financial reporting and tax filings. Accomplishment: Prepared a capital campaign presentation to eliminate the church s debt. Received vestry and rector s approval. The capital campaign launched in spring 2018 has been very successful. The church s bank debt was reduced from $1.7 million in December 2017 to $0.3 million currently. Outreach Fundraising Active Participation: Tour de Saints, Habitat for Humanity and Night Shelter. Background: VP, Operations & Controller, The Hertz Corporation - Car Leasing Division, Director, Worldwide Financial Planning RCA Corporation - RCA Records Division, Director of Finance - Adidas, USA, Director of Finance - Arcorp Properties/NY Waterways, Corporate Controller - RM Hospitality Group. Education: BA Accounting & Economics, with Honors, Queens College - City University of NY. Summary: I believe in service to others. I am willing to use my broad business/financial skills & experience to help the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. 3
Standing Committee Clergy Order (Vote for 2) THE REV. SARAH BALL-DAMBERG RESIDENCE: Durham POSITION: Associate Rector, Church of the Holy Family, Chapel Hill NOMINATOR: The Rev. Canon Rhonda Lee I have served a mid-sized urban congregation, a campus ministry, a small, newly-replanted congregation, and a large suburban congregation, so I have firsthand experience with the range of blessings and challenges currently before the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Serving congregations that don t precisely fit any canonical category and some that do, as well as serving on the Credentials Committee, the Galilee Commission, the Board of Examining Chaplains, several diocesan search committees and as a two-time deputy to General Convention has helped me understand where and how our Church is thriving and where it is not. Being in each of those communities has also given me enormous hope and faith in the power of the Holy Spirit to lead us where we need to go. I would welcome the chance to put my experience at the local, diocesan and national levels to use as a member of the Standing Committee. THE REV. JAMIE L ENFANT EDWARDS RESIDENCE: Clemmons POSITION: Rector, St. Clement s, Clemmons NOMINATOR: Martha Alexander In 23 years of ordained service in this diocese, I somehow went from young priest to approaching tribal elder in the blink of an eye. After stepping back for a few years, I feel called to offer to serve on the Standing Committee as one who is now a keeper of corporate memory, as well as being organized (I make a good secretary) and dependable. A good balance of newer voices and seasoned veterans enriches the committee. My experience includes: General Convention deputy 2018, 2015; MRST; Standing Committee (secretary ; president 2013); Diocesan Council ( ); Commission on Ministry ( ); Chartered Committee on Christian Formation ( ); Botswana Committee (2008 to present, co-chair ); Safe Church trainer ( ). 4
Standing Committee Clergy Order, Cont d (Vote for 2) THE REV. DAVID JACKSON RESIDENCE: Charlotte POSITION: Senior Chaplain, Trinity Episcopal School, Charlotte NOMINATOR: The Rev. Amanda Robertson Although relatively new to the diocese, I bring a fresh perspective and two decades of ordained leadership. I am the senior chaplain at Trinity Episcopal School, Charlotte. My service includes the Standing Committee in the Diocese of Hawai i, the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop (JNCEPB , selecting then-diocesan Bishop Michael Curry as one of the final candidates), and dean and president of Bloy House in Claremont, CA, in charge of the academic formation of those preparing for holy orders in a non-residential seminary environment. I love this diocese and hope to use my gifts of organization and leadership to serve in this way. Relevant Experience: Standing Committee, Diocese of Hawai i Diocesan Council, Diocese of Hawai i Deputy to General Conventions 2012 and 2015 Reader for the GOE s, General Board of Examining Chaplains Commission on Ministry, Diocese of Los Angeles THE REV. DIXON KINSER RESIDENCE: Winston-Salem POSITION: Rector, St. Paul s, Winston-Salem NOMINATOR: The Rev. Nathan Kirkpatirck Church/Diocesan Involvement: 2014-present, Rector at St. Paul s, Winston-Salem Dean of the Winston-Salem Convocation Associate Rector at St. Bartholomew s, Nashville, TN Board Member of the Dandridge Trust, Diocese of Tennessee , Chair of Diocesan Youth Steering Committee, Diocese of Tennessee Pertinent skills you bring to this work: Growing up in the ministries of the Diocese of North Carolina and now, having served two different dioceses as a cleric, I offer a variety of leadership experience and perspective. Furthermore, my parish work provides me with the first-hand knowledge of leading of complex ministry systems. I offer all this to the work of the Standing Committee. Why do you wish to serve? With my term as dean ending, Standing Committee seems like the logical place to apply what I learned. I want to do my part and be of service to the larger Church, particularly the Diocese and our bishops. 5
Standing Committee Clergy Order, Cont d (Vote for 2) THE REV. SALLIE SIMPSON RESIDENCE: Raleigh POSITION: Vocational Deacon, Saint Augustin es University Chapel, Raleigh NOMINATOR: The Rev. Rebecca Yarbrough Prior to my ordination as a deacon, I worked for 43 years at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital both in nursing (adult critical care) and supply chain. I had the opportunity to work with a very diverse group of people from all walks of life. I learned how to communicate easily with all levels of staff. I am a good listener and approach all discussions with an open mind. I also served as a member of the Professional Advisory Group for the School of Pastoral Care at the hospital and am still a member of that group. I was one of the first members of St. Clement of Alexandria Episcopal Church in Clemmons when it was started as a mission from St. Paul s, Winston-Salem. I served as a Sunday school teacher, vestry member, junior warden and senior warden. I am excited about the possibility to serve on the Standing Committee. THE REV. JEMONDE TAYLOR RESIDENCE: Raleigh POSITION: Rector, St. Ambrose, Raleigh NOMINATOR: The Rev. Javier E. Almendárez-Bautista It is an honor to serve the Diocese of North Carolina. I have been active in various diocesan ministries during my six years being canonically resident. Becoming a member of the Standing Committee will help me see the diocese through a different lens and provide a new opportunity to serve. I look forward to being a council of advice for our bishop, entering the discernment process with those called to ordained ministry, assisting with congregational level decisions and the many other ministries of the Standing Committee. Current and Past Diocesan Ministries Co-Chair, Nominating Committee for the XII Bishop Diocesan ( ) Diocesan Council ( ; ) Disciplinary Board ( ) Faith and Morals Ministry Chair ( ) Consultant, the Office of Black Ministries of The Episcopal Church ( ) 6
Standing Committee Lay Order (Vote for 1) There are no nominees in the lay order for Standing Committee. Board of Trustees, University of the South (Sewanee) Lay Order (Vote for 1) EMERSON BELL RESIDENCE: Charlotte POSITION: St. Martin s, Charlotte NOMINATOR: The Rev. Joshua Bowron I have come to know Sewanee over the years, have visited the campus numerous times, and am a supporter of the Stronger Truer Sewanee campaign. I have enormous respect for Sewanee s academic excellence and its unique traditions. Sewanee offers the very best liberal arts and theological education. I have been a member of Saint Martin s Church for almost 18 years and an Episcopalian for some 35 years. At Saint Martin s I have served on vestry and as senior warden and as a delegate to Diocesan Convention. I served one term on Diocesan Council and am currently lay warden of the Charlotte Convocation. I am a graduate of Sewanee s Education for Ministry program. It would be an honor and privilege to represent the Diocese of North Carolina and to work to maintain and strengthen its relationship with Sewanee. Ecce Quam Bonum. 7
