Benefice profile 2014 for the new benefice incorporating St Mary s Walton, Felixstowe and St Martin & St Mary, Trimley in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich, Suffolk Is God calling YOU to be our FIRST Team Rector? Come to Suffolk and enjoy the varying moods of the sea and skies. Come and help us make a difference. Come and steer us forward as we chart new waters. I must go down to the sea again To the lonely sea and the sky. I left my shoes and socks there - I wonder if they re dry? Spike Milligan Jancis Harvey sings Song of Suffolk : Historical background In 2000 the Orwell Team Ministry comprising of Trimley St Martin and St Mary (two Churches and two villages - one parish), Cavendish Community Church (now Christ Church, Felixstowe) and St Mary the Virgin Walton was formed. There was a Team Rector and two Team Vicars with each one having oversight for a particular fellowship. In January 2013 the Team Rector, who had responsibility for St Mary s Walton, moved to Kent. Concurrent to this the Colneys Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 1 of 16

Deanery, of which we are all part, has been asked to reduce the number of stipendiary priests from nine to seven. The Deanery Synod has agreed that the parishes of Trimley and Walton will form a new Benefice with the incumbent (Rector) having the sole oversight of both parishes. The Orwell Team Ministry will be disbanded in due course. Our Deanery Our understanding is that initially the person appointed will have sole oversight of St Mary s Walton with the current Team Vicar of Trimley remaining. When the Orwell Team Ministry has been legally dissolved, which we hope will happen shortly, the person appointed to Walton will be licensed as Rector to the new Benefice incorporating both the parishes of Trimley and Walton. At this point the current Team Vicar of Trimley will be licensed as Associate Priest/Assistant Curate; this post will remain only whilst this priest remains with us, and there is no plan to replace her when she leaves. There is also an assistant SSM and a Lay Pastor at Christ Church, and they are and will continue to be licensed to the new Benefice. The Deanery of Colneys stretches from Felixstowe as far inland as the outskirts of Ipswich and as far north as Kesgrave. We currently have 7 Stipendiary post holders which is the target number to achieve through the Deanery Plan drawn up as a result of the process of deanery re-organisation that has been ongoing since September However, the location of these posts has not yet been achieved. They are supported by 4 Self Supporting Ministers, 13 Lay Ministers and 3 curates as well as a large number of Lay Elders and retired clergy. The current Deanery plan was written in the spring of 2011 and can be found at This is due for revision during the next 12 months as we seek to draw closer together in mission and ministry. The Rural Dean, the Reverend Robert Hinsley is assisted by the Assistant Rural Dean, the Reverend Robin Spittle. Our Benefice Location and Detail We are strategically situated at the far end of a peninsula, where the shores are lapped by the North Sea and two rivers. Walton originally spanned a large area with a small fishing hamlet known as Felixstowe with the Trimleys being slightly further inland. Today Walton and the Trimleys are considered to be on the outskirts of the town of Felixstowe. Felixstowe has an overall population of approximately 29,000. The international container Port has become the centre of activity and commerce in the area. The Port of Felixstowe is Britain s biggest container port. In 2011, it was ranked as the 35th busiest container port in the world and Europe's sixth busiest. We estimate that the new Walton + Trimley Benefice will have a population of around 11,200 (5,500 in Walton and 5,700 across the two Trimleys). Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk, is about ten miles away, served by the A14, a branch railway line and a regular bus service. Felixstowe has a community hospital with a minor injuries unit. 3 Red lines = parish boundaries Blue dots = Churches Green dot = Rectory Housing The area hosts a big mixture of housing. There are private properties both modern and old; ranging from Victorian terraced and thatched cottages through to medium and large semi and detached family homes. Several housing association developments and some social housing also exist within the parishes. The areas are growing and there is already planning permission for another 200 homes on a site half way between the Trimleys and Walton, with another 67 homes to be built in Trimley St Martin. Planning talks are ongoing. There are two sheltered housing complexes, one residential and one nursing home. Employment Felixstowe is the 4 th largest town in Suffolk. Local employment is concentrated around the Port of Felixstowe (part of which has now expanded into Trimley parish, along the River Orwell) with an array of shipping agencies and haulage firms. There are local government offices in the town and many retail and restaurant outlets. There is a large retired population, thus a care and service economy exists too. Not far away there is the BT Research Centre at Martlesham and in Ipswich there are insurance companies, offices of Suffolk County Council and the University of Suffolk. Schools There are nine primary schools on the Felixstowe peninsula; one in each of the Trimley villages and two in Walton: Maidstone Road Infants and Causton Junior School. St Mary s Walton has regular contact with four of these schools, with our Open the Book team leading the assembly in three of them several times a term. Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 3 of 16

St Martin and St Mary s Trimley also has regular contact with their two schools. There is an independent nursery school in Trimley St Mary and one in Walton, which uses one of the church s buildings. The new Felixstowe Academy opened at Easter 2014 with 1500 students; it was formed when two local high schools merged. It is situated very close to the Walton/Trimley parish boundary. The Felixstowe Youth worker, supported by local churches, began to provide a chaplaincy service to the school from the beginning of the Summer Term Overview of the Diocese The area The Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich was founded in 1914 and includes the county of Suffolk, except for an area of North East Suffolk around Lowestoft, and one parish in the county of Essex. It serves about 720,000 people living in a geographical area of over 1,400 square miles. Out of this population, over 23,000 identify themselves with the Church of England by being members of the church electoral roll, and on average over 19,000 attend church activities weekly and over 17,000 attend a service of worship every Sunday. A wide range of communities exist in the diocese - from small rural villages to urban centres such as Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket, Haverhill, Sudbury and Beccles. The region has many sites of historic interest among which are Sutton Hoo, the Saxon village at West Stow and the ruins of the old Abbey at Bury St Edmunds where famously in 1214 the barons of England met and swore to force King John to accept the Charter of Liberties, later known as the Magna Carta. The whole county, together with its Heritage coastline, is also a haven of delight for lovers of natural history. The A14 provides rapid access from Felixstowe across the county to the A1 and the Midlands. The A12 links London with the county at Lowestoft, and the rail connection from Ipswich to London Liverpool Street takes just over one hour. Oversight and mission The diocese is overseen and led in mission by the Bishop of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich, supported by the Bishop of Dunwich (both vacant, and currently with David Thomson, Bishop of Huntingdon as Acting Bishop of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich), the Dean of St Edmundsbury and the Archdeacons of Suffolk and Sudbury. The Cathedral Church of St James and St Edmund, the mother church of the diocese, has been a place of pilgrimage and tourism for centuries and remains today a focal point for the Christian faith in Suffolk. The communities of the diocese are served by 445 parishes within 130 benefices and 18 deaneries. There are 478 church buildings of which 457 are listed. There are around 150 stipendiary clergy and 70 self supporting ministers, some 185 Lay Licensed Ministers, including 175 Readers and a few Licensed Lay Pastors and Local Evangelists, and almost 600 commissioned lay assistants (Lay Elders) in the parishes. There are 90 Church of England Controlled and Aided schools in the diocese. Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 4 of 16

The Anglican churches across the diocese seek to develop close links with other Christian denominations and to build understanding with members of other faiths. The diocese also has close ties with churches across the world, most especially a link with the diocese of Kagera in Western Tanzania. Administration The diocese works through the synodical structures and is served by a small team of diocesan office staff led by the Diocesan Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, most of whom are based in modern offices in the centre of Ipswich. The diocese has a total annual revenue budget in excess of 8 million and the Diocesan Board of Finance manages a total balance sheet of 80 million. The office staff provide administrative, financial, secretarial, property, communication and general support to clergy and parishes, as well as supporting the Church of England schools across the county. Mission and Pastoral Policy As a diocese we seek to live by the Five Marks of Mission of the Anglican Communion: To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom To teach, baptise and nurture new believers To respond to human need by loving service To seek to transform unjust structures of society To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth The Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Committee works to policies approved by the Diocesan Synod which seek to encourage Church growth and allocate resources across the diocese in order to provide leadership in mission and ministry in all its communities. The policies encourage collaboration and the diocese and/or region provides training and support for local and licensed ministries, ordained and lay. Lay and ordained officers and parochial clergy work collaboratively, sharing ministry with all types of ministers both lay and ordained, to encourage and nurture vocation to various ministries both formal and informal. Parish share Parish share enables all the people of the parishes to contribute towards costs, with a priority of maintaining mission and ministry across the whole diocese. Occasionally there are genuine financial difficulties in parishes, but parishes are expected to pay the parish share in full. Lay and ordained officers and parochial clergy encourage realistic and sacrificial giving by upholding, teaching and preaching this Gospel imperative. Support Parochial clergy benefit from a highly supportive and rigorous process of Ministerial Development Review, introduced in line with the Ecclesiastical Offices (Terms of Service) Measure to enhance the existing Episcopal Review process. Rural deans and deanery chapters provide immediate local support and high priority is given to participation in chapter meetings and deanery synod. Lay and ordained staff and officers are supported through the DBF Staff Development and Support Scheme which also includes annual review. There are a number of diocesan networking fora both regionally and within the national church structures. Ministerial development Both personal and professional/ministerial development is strongly encouraged and regular support is readily available for all staff in a number of ways. All licensed and commissioned ministers receive an annual training allowance, and guidance in Continuing Ministerial Education is available. Study leave for all ministry officers and parochial clergy is available on a 10-year rolling programme. Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 5 of 16

St Mary the Virgin, Walton Our Vision "To share God s love and to deepen our relationship with Jesus" We are an open Evangelical Church with a passion for bringing Jesus to our local community. We love to worship, proclaim the Gospel and praise God together. At this exciting and challenging moment in the life of St Mary s Walton we are seeking to work more closely with St Martin s & St Mary s Trimley and to develop our outreach and ministry amongst the Church family and the surrounding areas. We have plenty of space with two church halls and a modern church interior for outreach and for developing our worship services for all ages. Four Messy Church services are planned for Currently our Open the Book Team visit three local primary schools; we run a toddler group and have a Food Box in church. We are very involved with Walton Churches and Churches Together in Felixstowe and we actively support financially and by prayer the Walton Parish Nurse Project, Hope Trust, helping older people; the Felixstowe Youth Worker and Town Pastors. In the community, and within the church family, a wide range of opportunities exist for outreach right from the very young through to the elderly. Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 7 of 16

Our Church and Church Life Central to our church life is the worship of our Lord at our services. There are three services on Sunday and a weekly one on a Wednesday morning. The services include a wide range of worship styles. Sunday Sunday is when our church comes together as a family, offering ourselves to God. This should be the very best that we can offer. 8am 10am 6.30pm A traditional, quiet service of BCP Holy Communion (average 15 people). Morning worship services which offer opportunities for creative worship including Service of The Word, All-age and monthly Holy Communion. All these services are followed by coffee and fellowship (average 80 adults & 10 children). The evening services rotate between Evening Worship, Holy Communion, Service of The Word and a Reflective Service (average 25 people). We have a choir and a worship group (called JAM Jesus and Music) with openness for all ages to work and worship together. The JAM group leading worship Sparkle, Sophie and George enjoying our All Age Worship Junior church, currently for ages 3 to 11, meets during morning services. The children are an integral and valued part of the church life and will often take part in services. After an introductory activity they go over to the Hall to learn and explore the Bible together. During All-Age worship they take a full part in the service. Our teenagers stay in all the services and meet separately. The group meets monthly on a Wednesday evening for Bible study and fellowship; they chose to call themselves Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 8 of 16

In 2013 we invited local people, lonely and housebound to the harvest meal. Remembrance Day Service. We invite those who have been recently bereaved to a reflective memorial and thanksgiving service in November. We hold an annual Autumn Fair; this is a time of fellowship and fund-raising. Every year the event attracts local people to our hall and raises money for local, national and international Christian Charities. Currently we have 120 members on the electoral roll, 52 of these are non-resident. During 2013 there were 5 weddings, 13 baptisms and 22 funerals (due to no incumbent, 0 funerals at the Crematorium, but normal average is around 20). Ministry Team St Mary s has four retired Clergy, four Readers (two of whom will have been licensed in June 2014), four Lay Elders, our Junior Church and Music Coordinators along with many others in the fellowship who read lessons, lead intercessions, and visit the sick and housebound. 10 Our Mission and Financial Giving We support twelve different missions throughout the year including four, chosen by the APCM to receive the proceeds from the Autumn Fair and the Copper Tower (pillar of 2ps). Annually we give 1% of our unrestricted giving to Christian organisations and together with events for these missions, retiring collections and special services in 2013, this came to 5,648. We support Fairtrade with a monthly stall in church and by using Fairtrade teas and coffees for all church events. For the past three years we have given 5,000 annually from designated funds to support the Walton Parish Nurse Project. At December 2013 our net assets were 158,324 and the voluntary giving for the year was 60,038. We aim to meet our Parish Share in full and in 2013 we contributed the full amount of 58,770. 11 Beyond St Mary s As part of the group of Walton Churches we support practically, financially and prayerfully the Parish Nursing Project (the Parish Nurse is a member of St Mary s.) Members of our church help at children s summer holiday clubs which are run by the Walton Churches group. We are an active member of Churches Together in Felixstowe. We also support, through practical help, finance and prayer. o Hope Trust helping older people. o Boost Felixstowe Youth o Town Pastors. In addition to the above organisations we support a number of local, national and international charities through our monthly mission programme. The Buildings St. Mary the Virgin Church A full description of the church can be found on the website: It is an interesting medieval building dating back to the mid 1300s. The building has been loved and cared for and is in very good order. About twenty years ago the church was reordered; amongst other changes chairs were introduced to give a more flexible worshipping space. The reordering was carried out in a sensitive manner and does not detract from the beauty of the building. It is comfortable, warm and of a most pleasing appearance. There are two vestries, one for the clergy and the other for the choir. There is a small but adequate kitchen, with a hatch into the church for serving refreshments. The adjacent toilet incorporates all current disabled standards. We have a good quality sound system, including fixed and radio microphones and a loop system, a digital projector, a keyboard and a pipe organ. The surrounding churchyard is closed, and is managed by Suffolk Coastal District Council. There is a small memorial rose garden that is maintained by the church. A car park is at the rear of the church. The use of the church for events such as concerts by visiting choirs and other musical productions has been encouraged. St. Philip s Church This is a small twin building comprising a church and hall. St Philip's no longer functions as a church and is currently used by a local play group and the hall is let out to various local organisations. The buildings are also used for storage and to house the treasurer s office. Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 11 of 16

The Church Hall The hall, situated directly opposite the church, was built in the early 20 th century. It is well maintained and consists of a main hall with a stage, a committee room and a kitchen. It is well used by the church and other local organisations. At the front is the church office which is regularly staffed during the week by our administrator. The Hall facilities were upgraded recently, adding extra storage, accessible toilets and a new kitchen. The Hall being used for church socials lergy Housing Clergy Housing The Rectory, built in the early 1990 s, is situated approximately three quarters of a mile from St. Mary s Church. It is a traditionally styled house, of green book standard, with four bedrooms and a study. The property is enhanced by central heating, a garage and an enclosed garden. Victoria Cottage Adjacent to the hall is a recently refurbished cottage. It was originally built for the hall caretaker and is currently rented out to a couple who are very actively involved in church life; one as a Churchwarden and the other as our Church Administrator. 13 Parish of Trimley St Martin & St Mary This Parish Profile is being written in the knowledge that things are changing due to the Deanery Plan. The Trimley parish has, up until now, been part of the Orwell Team, comprising of Trimley St Martin and St Mary, St Mary s Walton and Christchurch Felixstowe. The Team is now being disbanded and a new benefice of Trimley and Walton is being created. This is being done as it is an opportune time to implement the recently agreed Deanery Pastoral Reorganisation. St Martin s Church At present there is a Team Vicar in residence in Trimley itself but that post will shortly become Associate Priest (Assistant Curate). This will be a temporary post which will not be replaced when the post become vacant. There is an approximate total population of 5,700 across the two villages. It is both rural and suburban, looking to Felixstowe for most of its facilities and having excellent links to Ipswich both by road and rail, with a station in Trimley St. Mary. Church buildings St Martin s Church is used for worship and also concerts, exhibitions and as a venue for church meetings. It was re-ordered in 2007 to include a toilet (with access for the disabled) in the tower and a kitchen area at the back of the church for St Mary s Church coffee/tea making after the service on Sundays and for Café 10. There is also an area at the back of the church set aside for young children with plenty to keep them entertained. St Mary's Church is no longer used for worship but has been used as a parish and community centre. We are in discussions with the Diocesan Office about the possibility of renting the building out. Both churches have their own churchyards (now closed) joined together as one large churchyard and each church has its memorial garden in the churchyard. 14 Services The style of worship at Trimley Church is characterised as being middle of the road with a leaning towards evangelical. Sunday 1030 All Age Worship service (CW) on the first Sunday of the month Holy Communion (CW) on the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays Morning Praise (CW) on the 3 rd Sunday Different format each time adopted for fifth Sunday services (Average attendance 35-50) 1600 Afternoon Praise a mini messy church for all ages monthly on the fourth Sunday (Average attendance 20) Wednesday 1030 Holy Communion (CW) (average attendance 10) Services are held monthly at Reeve Lodge and Brierfield Nursing Home. Communion is taken to the sick and housebound on a regular basis. At Easter, we hold a Quiet Hour from 2-3 pm on Good Friday and the celebration of Easter on Sunday. On Remembrance Sunday we have a service followed by the laying of wreaths at the memorial outside St Martin s and at the memorial window in St Mary s. At Christmas, we hold the service of Nine Lessons and Carols usually the week before Christmas, two Crib Services at 4.30 and 6 pm on Christmas Eve (always very well attended), Midnight Mass and Family Christmas Communion on Christmas Day. Clergy and parish assistance In the parish there are 3 active lay elders and 3 retired clergy are resident, although only 1 of these worships in the parish. Organisations and activities within the Church The affairs of the Church are conducted by the Parochial Church Council. The standing committee meets in between PCC meetings to conduct urgent business. The social and funding committee organises the many and varied social and fundraising events held throughout the year. These include quizzes, visits to Aldeburgh Theatre, a Candlelit Supper with homegrown entertainment at Christmas, Open Gardens later this year, assorted shared meals and various sales. The building committee operates when there is building or repair work to be done by members of the parish. There is a leadership group consisting of clergy, churchwardens and lay elders who meet to discuss pastoral matters. We are members of Churches Together in Felixstowe. A Weekly Bible Study group meets which includes Lent and Advent sessions A weekly prayer group meets at various venues. There is a pastoral care team which arranges visits to those in need. The local branch of the Mothers Union continues to meet monthly. Ladies evening put on by the gentlemen Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 14 of 16

We also operate Café Ten, an open coffee morning, once a week on Tuesday mornings from 10.00am to midday in St Martin s Church. This is open to everyone. Trimley Tots, a group for parents, carers and toddlers, meets every Friday afternoon in St Mary s during term time. Excitingly, over the last few years a number of families have been coming regularly to church and as a result a Sunday School was started up in March It will take place on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays of the month, at the same time as the morning service. Artwork provided by Trimley Tots Outreach In addition to the activities mentioned above, we have contacts with both the local primary schools. We operate the Shoebox Scheme not only within our church congregation but we receive the parcels from both schools for onward distribution. We have also operated three very successful Experiences for the schools; Christmas, Harvest and Easter. This involves setting up 6 stations within the church giving the essential message of each festival together with a quick activity. The children spend about 8 minutes at each. In this way we have had about 260 children from both schools and we have received very positive feedback from both children and teachers. We have a stall at the Trimley Carnival and have St Martin s open for refreshments and toilet stops as the carnival procession passes by. We sell hanging baskets and plants, cakes and bric-a-brac in May, and have a Christmas sale, all of which are well attended by those not connected with the church. We also deliver a card each Christmas to every house in the Trimleys advertising our services over that period. Easter experience with Trimley St Mary School Parish finances and Parish Share The parish s outgoings have exceeded income ever since 2005 which was the last year in which the PCC was able to pay its Parish Share in full. The PCC holds 5,000 in reserve to cover any rainy day incident. In 2013 the PCC were able to pay 28,919 against a target Parish Share of 39,050. With the new Centennial scheme, the target for 2014 is now 49,094. Income from voluntary giving stands at 32,160 for Weddings/Funerals etc The following gives the statistics for Church activities outside the scheduled services for 2013: 10 Baptisms 1 Wedding 5 Funerals 11 Crematorium Services Plant sale at St Mary s Church Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 15 of 16

Other churches within the parish There is a Free Church in Trimley St. Mary and a Methodist Church in Trimley St. Martin. Village activities and facilities Annual carnival Rainbow and Brownie packs meet Two branches of the Women s Institute Trimley Saints Players put on two productions a year Sports and Social Club Bowls club Tennis club Thriving youth football teams for 5-17 year olds Trout lake for fishing Royal Society for the Protection of Birds reserve Various shops, including a post office, two public houses and two farm shops/garden centres situated around the villages Needs and Wishes of the Parish of Trimley St Martin & St Mary from its Benefice team leader The assumed starting point is that, in the new Benefice arrangement, Trimley Church and St Mary s Walton will be equal partners in all respects. We are seeking a Benefice team leader who will be committed to leading services at Trimley Church at least twice a month and through that enable the two parishes to work together wherever practical and desirable. Finally Life is a book to be read. We have shared some of our history, our hopes and vision for the future with you. As you have read our parish profile has God inspired you with a desire to help us write the next pages in the book of the new Benefice? We certainly hope so! And we look forward to hearing from you and to working with you. Parish Profile 4 June 2014 Page 16 of 16
