2 Editorial The pages to a new chapter in the life of the East Jamaica Conference continues to unfold under our Author and Chief Editor, Jesus Christ, who continues to use His chosen leaders to accomplish His work in this part of the vineyard. The East Jamaica Conference eagerly anticipated the beginning of the New Year, as the Administrators, Directors and Members of Staff waited to see what the ensuing months held. Like in previous years, the first half of 2011 has been filled with many successes and daunting challenges. We will not fail however, to give God the glory and the praise that He rightfully deserves for allowing us to accomplish the countless goals that we set out to achieve. As the year 2011 progresses, we look forward to many more successes. We also stand prepared to face the battle of the Great Controversy - the struggle between Good and Evil, which rages on so vehemently. Acknowledging these things, we must equip our minds with spiritual nourishment in order to truly survive the test of time. How will we survive this great test? The time for a personal Revival and Reformation is now! Yes, let us proclaim and practice the Revival and Reformation message today! The church will only begin to carry out its true function when each of us play our part as agents of change. We must therefore shine our lights in this dark, cold world, so that those who come in contact with us will be able to see Jesus Christ, high and lifted up. Let us continue to work together, pray for and encourage one another to do our part, as we advance the work in East Jamaica Conference and beyond. The world around us seems to be collapsing, morally, economically, environmentally, socially, politically and spiritually. The task before the church has become increasingly strenuous. However, no matter how challenging the circumstance, the church that Christ has bought with His own blood must triumph in tough times and provide hope and comfort by remaining faithful to Christ and the mission. Life has some unpleasant moments for every one of us. However, we must never become bitter when things did not go the way we wanted it to. If we are faithful to God things will become better. In spite of the difficulties or misfortunes that we may experience from time to time, we must adopt an attitude of aggressive and defiant perseverance in keeping the advent faith and staying close to Christ. The God who provided and carried us on eagles s wings over these years is expecting us to walk faithfully with Him if we are going to receive all His blessings. Faithfulness is as essential in life s common duties as in those involving greater responsibility. (PM 109:3) Let us pray without ceasing. In the last conference session, I shared a few thoughts which I would like to remind you of again. The mission of the church must always be our focus. Every throbbing of the heart should inspire us with a deeper love for Christ and the mission of His church and increase our passion for service. The obsession that increases with every heart beat is what we need in this post-modern era to carry on the work successfully to its completion. The Advent Message in the context of the Three Angels Messages of Revelation chapter fourteen, constantly remains relevant and the only hope for this world. In this judgment hour, we have a solemn and sacred responsibility to share Christ with everyone. Let us pray without ceasing. Pastor Adrian Cotterell - President, EJC Since the beginning of the twentyfirst century and in particular the last quadrennium that I have served, spiritual leadership from my own personal experience involves overcoming and tackling unforeseen challenges and complexities unseen and unheard of before in the history of the church. However, we must stand for that which is right and clearly yet compassionately communicate our unwillingness to compromise with wrongdoing. The times call for leaders who are willing to stand courageously for righteousness when it crosses swords with political correctness. God is the only person who can choose the spiritual leader. The authenticity of spiritual leadership does not come from friends or the good report that the constituency gives; and it cannot be destroyed by slander and smear campaign. Spiritual leaders do not look for authentication from these sources. He or she looks only to God because only God and God alone can authenticate the spiritual leader. Spiritual leadership is not positional; rather it is spiritual. Spiritual Leaders have the solemn and sacred responsibility to characterize their work with integrity, transparency and moral tenacity. This means that that your chief objective is to please God and emulate the meek and lowly Nazarene, Jesus our Savior. Therefore, the work of the leader is a witness for God that must give the correct message of righteousness. Let us pray without ceasing. Let us pray earnestly for the church especially those who are hurting. Let us pray for the leadership. God has not lost control. He is still in charge. He is still our Jehovah Jireh. Every disappointment can be an appointment for God to show His glory. Let us pray that He will show us His glory in this most trying and testing times. Let us pray that our faith in Christ will grow even stronger. July 2011 Adventist beam 3

3 Evangelistic Accomplishments Installation of the Jamaica Union Officers Sabbath, January 22, 2011 During the first half of 2011, the church in East Jamaica Conference met and overcame several challenges while accomplishing great successes in the area of evangelism. The East Jamaica Conference utilized several methods in harnessing souls for God s Kingdom, which included: Small Group Evangelism, Local Church Crusades, Regular Bible Study and Devotion, and Witnessing to members of the community. We give God the glory and the praise as we are able to rejoice in reporting that between the months of Convention (Kingston) - Sunday January 8, 2011 On Sunday January 8, 2011, scores of members from various congregations all across the EJC Constituency gathered at the Kencot SDA Church for the annual Convention Service. The Service began in fine style and saw presentations in song by several youth of our church. President of the East Jamaica Conference, Pastor Adrian Cotterell, did not fail to remind the congregation of the need for personal revival and reformation, a theme which shifted in high gear all across our local fields. (Pastor Charles Blythe - Youth Ministries Director and Chaplaincy Coordinator of the Jamaica Union Conference). January and May this year, the East Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists welcomed 952 precious souls to the Seventh-day Adventist family, through baptism and saw the formation of 526 small groups. To God be the Glory, Great things He hath done! As is customary, the members of the constituency watched and eagerly listened in anticipation for the reports of their leaders. To God be the glory, many were not disappointed! Members of the constituency made their voices heard by giving affirmation, making suggestions and simply airing their opinions as to how the Administration could forge an even greater partnership with them. Sabbath, January 22, 2011 carefully etched its place in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The East Jamaica Conference and other conferences across the Jamaican field joined in celebration to witness the installation of the newly appointed officers of the Jamaica Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Entry #1 THE BIBLE MY GUIDE by: Hashae Williams - Guava Gap SDA Church The Bible is more than a book to me, it is my lamp, my map, my guide. I feel like I m born again, with the knowledge revealed inside; I want to be loyal like the apostles - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John So with God s help I can be a strong man. The works of God are so mysterious to me, But the Bible is the truth - even the blind shall see. Let me show you this revelation, He died so that we all can receive salvation. I want to join the King in the land of milk and honey, Because I know God will give me more lunch money; Since God is my priority, and the Bible is my guide, I will study it every day, and keep it by my side. I can do all things with Him So if I were a bus, God could make me swim. From Egypt to Canaan, give me any word, The Bible is packed with the best stories ever heard. I feel so strong like I m pumped up on Mama s porridge. Telling the world what I m learning in King James College I shout Yadda, yes this is Greek for God s knowledge. The Bible! Yes, the Bible,my guide. Poems written by Children Entry # 3 THE BIBLE WE LL NEVER PART By: Shan Genas - North Street SDA Church The Bible is a novel, a collection of books. The Psalms of David, the Songs of Solomon, Filled with lessons of love, joy and fear. From Adam and Eve to David and Goliath, And why Joshua and his army could not keep quiet. There was always something to learn, Something to uplift the spirit and bring joy to the heart My Bible You and I will never part. Entry #2 God s Book The Bible By: Dajumn Ellis - Guava Gap SDA Church The Bible relied on for instruction over many generations - The wise men would read it for ethical recreation, The vehicle that unfolds the days of Creation. Many are happy because they have found their way to Salvation. And like the five wise virgins, it is my candle light. And in times of trial, within its pages I hide. The Bible, God s book, God s words, our guide. Impassioned feelings expressed in imaginative flights, Coined in parables, like nothing I have ever heard. Words which shaken my heart to the core Nations against nations, Wars everywhere. I just have to say a silent prayer. The Holy Bible, loved by many, yet confusion to some, But these words are blessed by the Almighty One. With it we see the world through God s eye And the beauty of our future we also see If only for a moment, If only but for a moment 20 July 2011 Adventist beam July 2011 Adventist beam 21

15 School Choir Shares Jesus with Police The Kingsway High School Choir giving Priority Magazines to Members of the Half Way Tree Police Station EJC AMBASSADORS MAKE COURTESY CALL TO NCU By: Adiese Jonas The Ambassadors Programme, which is spearheaded by the Sabbath School, Personal Ministries and Community Services Department of the East Jamaica Conference, is also geared at introducing the Youth to the civic leaders of the society. Sis. Kathleen Dunkley, Associate Director- Sabbath School, Personal Ministries and Community Services Department, EJC The choir of the Kingsway High School in Kingston took time out from their regular academic studies to share the love of Jesus with members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force at the Half Way Tree Police Station in Kingston on Monday June 20, The students conducted devotion and distributed Priorities (an Adventist Christian magazine) to the men and women present. Sergeant Florene Clarke lauded the efforts of the students and urged them to make their visit continuous and consistent. She stated that she was impressed that so many teenagers from the school enjoyed taking part in this kind of a missionary venture. "With juvenile delinquency and other serious teenage problems affecting our society, it's a cause for concern and so when we see students who are focused in this aspect of life, then it tells me that all is not lost and that there's still hope," said Sergeant Clarke. Since 2004 the Kingsway High School and the Half Way Tree Police Station have formed an exceptional working relationship and they continue to support each other in numerous events. Principal of the School Mrs. Claudette Genas speaks highly of the commitment and service that the Half Way Tree Police Station continues to give to the school. Principal of the Kingsway High School- Claudette Genas, addressing the Half Way Tree Police Said Genas, "When we have Sports Day they come along, when we're distributing Priorities and other booklets in the community, they also come along. Also when they had their recent anniversary service, they allow our students to participate in the programme. Devotional Speaker- Rochelle Thomas, sharing her devotional message with the HWT Police The Devotional speaker, 16 year-old Rochelle Thomas, was excited about her participation in the witnessing activity. "I found it a blessing, knowing that we as youth are able to minister to the ones who are charged with the responsibility to protect the citizens of our society and giving them a sense of hope while they risk their lives for us. It helps me to be closer to God, especially the fact that I was the one who spoke; so whatever I said, it had an impact on me. Knowing that I could speak to the police and they heard and learnt from God, and God could use me, also impacted me." In addition to their missionary work at the Half Way Tree Police Station, the Kingsway High School is also engaged in Street Ministry, assisting with the activities at the Good Samaritan Inn and Teens for Christ (an established club of students who do visitations to the homes of the less fortunate) Finalists of the EJC Ambassadors Competition The finalists of the East Jamaica Conference s Ambassadors competition paid a special courtesy call to the Northern Caribbean University on Monday July 18, 2011, where they basked in the offerings of the institution. The team of vibrant youngsters could be clearly identified as they made their way across the campus, which landed them in a dialogue with Interim President, Dr. Daniel Fider. They clearly articulated their mission and purpose as they introduced themselves to the President and his team while making use of the opportunity to ask their long awaited questions about the renown Northern Caribbean University. Interim President- NCU, Dr. Daniel Fider President Fider welcomed the Ambassadors and expressed his delight to see their active participation in the growth and mission of the church. He urged them to make Christ the centre of their lives, knowing full well that when this is done, all of their needs will be supplied. During the course of the afternoon, the team received a complete tour of the campus and its facilities which proved to an exciting end to the day s activities. What started out as a dream for Sister Kathleen Dunkley over two years ago, has now become a reality thanks to the assistance of the EJC Administrators, several other institutions and organizations. The Ambassadors Programme is notably the only organized youth oriented programme of its kind, which aims to build a high level of spirituality among the youth while teaching them the rich heritage of the Seventhday Adventist Church. Associate Director with responsibility for this initiative, Sister Kathleen Dunkley, expressed that the Ambassadors programme was conceptualized out of a growing concern she had for the low levels of Sabbath School participation and lesson study among the Youth and Junior students. Since the programme has been introduced Dunkley has expressed how much it has impacted her. I ve always known that our young people are very bright and the more I watch them, I am convinced that they have a future. I m very happy to help in any way to assist in steering them to heaven, said the enthusiastic Dunkley. (L-R) Ambassadors Annel Davidson, Stephanie Cole & Krystal Gooden alongside Dr. Daniel Fider One of the finalists, Krystal Gooden will long remember her journey in this competition. I have enjoyed it so much, it s been a wonderful experience, said Gooden. She has been engaged in outreach activities on behalf her school and she continues to invite her friends to church as often as she can. For her, the most memorable experiences in the competition have been the courtesy calls and her most recent visit to the Northern Caribbean University. The group will make further courtesy calls to the University College of the Caribbean, the Jamaica Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and finally to the Governor General s residence at King s House. 28 July 2011 Adventist beam July 2011 Adventist beam 29
