4 JOHN 15:1-4 NIV I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit fruit that will last and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

(Political, economic, social situation, custom, level of spirituality) b. What is the specific historical-cultural context and purpose of this book? (writer, audience, purpose)

11 SOME BASIC RULES OF BIBLE INTERPRETATION 1. HISTORICAL-CULTURAL AND CONTEXTUAL STUDY c. What is the immediate context of the passage under consideration? (major blocks of material, flow of thought, author s perspective, descriptive or prescriptive truth, teaching focus, immediate audience) KEY: WHO is being spoken to? WHY? What did it mean to them?

12 THE IMMEDIATE CONTEXT John 13 to 17 = Jesus final words of comfort to his disciples before his arrest.

13 THE IMMEDIATE CONTEXT It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The evening meal was in progress (Jn 13:1-2a NIV) Come now, let us leave (Jn 14:31b). I am the true vine (Jn 15:1) When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it (Jn 18:1 NIV). JOHN 13-17

21 SOME BASIC RULES OF BIBLE INTERPRETATION 2. LEXICAL-SYNTACTICAL STUDY What is the meaning of individual words (lexicology) and the way those words are combined (syntax)? Recognises words whether literally, figuratively, symbolically.

22 SOME BASIC RULES OF BIBLE INTERPRETATION 2. LEXICAL-SYNTACTICAL STUDY 6-Step procedure: a. Identify the general literary form (prose, poetry, apocalyptic literature) b. Trace the development of author s theme (context of the words and syntax) c. Identify the natural divisions of the text (conceptual units through the use of sentences and paragraphs)

Determine what the individual words mean (identify multiple meaning of word in time and culture, and single meaning intended in context) f. 28 WHAT DOES THE WORD MEAN? The meaning of fruit, looking at the immediate context is: LOVE This is to my Father s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love (Jn 15:8-9 NIV).

Determine the nature of God s relationship to man and identify the implication of this view for the passage you are studying b. Assess the extent of theological knowledge available to the people of that time and the meaning of the passage to them KEY: BIBLICAL NARRATIVES OF GOD
