1 January Leadership Conference Confronts Cultural Challenges Nashville, TN Free Will Baptist leaders from 21 states and two Canadian provinces gathered at Nashville Airport Marriott Hotel December 5-6, for the 2011 Free Will Baptist Leadership Conference. The annual event, which provides a meeting venue for denominational boards and agencies, is open to every Free Will Baptist minister and leader. The two-day meeting features nightly worship services and practical instruction along with time for conversation and networking. I get so much from Leadership Conference every year, said Ohio Pastor Mark Price. Not only do I enjoy the fellowship and encouragement, but the information I take away has a profound impact on my ministry. It s especially beneficial for someone with Dr. Well s experience to help pastors balance the relationship between culture and ministry. The 2011 conference theme, Confronting the Culture Crisis, brought attendees face to face with the challenges facing today s church as it interacts with the world around it. Keynote speaker, Dr. David F. Wells spoke four times, urging attendees to avoid the trap of allowing 21 st century culture that is, the assumptions people make about the deep questions of life to shape church and ministry. He encouraged listeners to strive instead to let the truth of the gospel communicate clearly, without apology. Executive Secretary Keith Burden reflected on the impact of his messages. Free Will Baptists took a significant step forward this week in confronting the cultural crisis in our churches. Dr. Wells helped us contextualize many of the issues we are facing, addressing them from a biblical perspective. May God give us courage and wisdom as we continue this important task. The author of the book, Courage to Be Protestant, Dr. Wells is distinguished senior research professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He received a B.D. from the University of London; Th.M. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; Ph.D. from Manchester University (England); and was a post-doctoral Research Fellow at Yale Divinity School. He is a council member of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. The Cambridge Declaration came about in 1996 as a result of his book No Place for Truth, or Whatever Happened to Evangelical Theology? Nightly services featured music provided by Free Will Baptist Bible College, including performances by the College Choir and Rejoice quartet, both under the direction of Dr. James Stevens. In addition to plenary sessions and worship services, denominational officers and board members handled a lengthy slate of business. The Nominating Committee of the National Association of Free Will Baptists met to make recommendations for board and commission vacancies to be filled at the 2012 convention in Memphis, Tennessee. Tim Campbell (AR) chairs the seven-person committee. Other national boards and committees met in conjunction with the conference, including the Executive Committee, Board of Retirement, Home Missions Board, International Missions Board, Free Will Baptist Bible College Board of Trustees, Board of the Free Will Baptist Foundation, Randall House Publications Board, and the Master s Men Board.

The 2012 Leadership Conference will meet December 3-4, at the Nashville Marriott Airport Hotel. Board Postpones Missionary Deployments Antioch, TN The hardest task I ve had thus far as general director, Clint Morgan stated, most certainly was calling missionaries who expected to leave the States in January and tell them their departure is on hold. Following the December board meeting, the general director made phone calls to Tim and Kristi Johnson (Spain), Heath and Joni (creative access), Mick and Rachel (creative access), and Jennifer (creative access). All of them expected to depart over the next few weeks. Also told to delay travel plans were Steve and Becky Riggs (France), Darren and Dana (creative access), David and Angie (creative access), Sam and June McVay (Spain), and Dale and Sandra Bishop (Japan). In an ongoing effort to end financial shortfalls and rebuild cash reserves, the board voted to postpone sending all new missionaries as well as veteran missionaries currently on stateside assignment to their fields of service until cash reserves reach a sustainable level of 10% of the operational budget. The board voted to implement this strategy as an ongoing standard policy. At any point that cash reserves fall below 10% of the operating budget, stated Board Chairman Danny Williams, deployment of missionaries will be halted so that those already stateside can assist in raising the funds to keep all other missionaries at their stations. Exceptions may be made on an individual basis with the approval of both the general director and the board chairman if a failure to return to the field of service will result in a legal, career-altering situation. All those currently slated for stateside assignment in 2012 will still return to the States, affirmed General Director Clint Morgan. We need all hands on deck, sharing the marvelous work God is doing through Free Will Baptists and encouraging our people to pray and give. Scheduled to return for stateside assignment during the first quarter of 2012 are Kenneth and Rejane Eagleton (Brazil), Jaimie and Tammy Lancaster (Uruguay), and Shane and Joy (creative access). We are immensely grateful for those who have been staunch supporters of the Mission throughout the years and especially during the financial crisis that has plagued the global economy, emphasized Sam McVay, missionary to Spain and interim development director. However, we must have more churches and individuals to become sacrificially involved in taking the gospel to the ends of the earth. Board Seeks to Move Forward While Halting Losses Antioch, TN The eight members of the Board of Free Will Baptist International Missions met December 7-8, 2011, in the Mission s office in Antioch, Tennessee. The two-day, intensive session, bathed in frequent prayer, yielded encouraging reports, positive actions, and difficult decisions. Jeff Turnbough, director of field operations, took the board members on an inspiring virtual tour of the IM world, highlighting many opportunities our missionaries and 2 ministry partners currently are witnessing, in spite of the economic crisis the Mission is facing. Our missionaries are working effectively and God is blessing in unprecedented ways, Jeff stated. Joel and Lydie Teague were appointed as two-year, short-term interns to France. Currently, the couple lives and works in France and will travel to the States in 2012 to raise ministry awareness and funds. Even in the midst of continued financial challenges, Board Chairman Danny Williams emphasized, I am optimistic. God is working in marvelous ways globally and I am confident people within our denomination will respond financially to ensure the gospel continues to be made known around the world. The board voted to approve a $6.1 million budget for 2012, a full $1.15 million less than the initial framework budget adopted in April The board instructed General Director Clint Morgan to develop action plans for coping with further financial deficits. He is to present these to the board for review and approval as soon as possible. In an ongoing effort to end financial shortfalls and to rebuild cash reserves, the board voted to postpone sending all new missionaries as well as veteran missionaries currently on stateside assignment to their fields of service until cash reserves reach a sustainable level of 10% of the operational budget. The board voted to implement this strategy as an ongoing standard policy. Exceptions may be made on an individual basis with the approval of both the general director and the board chairman if a failure to return to the field of service will result in a legal, career-altering situation. All those currently slated for stateside assignment in 2012 will still return to the States, affirmed Clint Morgan. We need all hands ondeck, sharing the marvelous work God is doing through Free Will Baptists and encouraging our people to pray and give.

All board members were present for the two-day session: Nelson Henderson (AR), Jeff Manning (NC), Greg McAllister (CA), Tom McCullough (MI), Rob Morgan (TN), Mark Price (OH), Danny Williams (AL), and Randy Wilson (OK) Bible Conference/FORUM12 to Focus on Church Revitalization NASHVILLE, TN The four-day Bible Conference/FORUM 12 set March 4-7 at Free Will Baptist Bible College is expected to bring together hundreds of pastors, youth workers, and church leaders, along with FWBBC students and faculty, as high profile speakers unfold the 2012 conference theme, Revitalizing the Church. Dr. Harry Reeder III, senior pastor at Briarwood Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Birmingham, Alabama, will lead three plenary sessions on revitalization. Dr. Reeder previously addressed the issue of revitalization and outreach during FWBBC s 2009 Bible Conference. He will be joined on the program by two rising voices in the church revitalization movement, Dr. Russell Moore, vice president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, Kentucky), and Pastor Mike McKinley who leads Guilford Baptist Church in Sterling, Virginia. Both McKinley and Moore will expand the conference revitalization theme. Dr. Moore is highly regarded for his vital ministry as a theologian, educator, and journalist as senior editor of Touchstone Magazine. Seven years ago, Pastor McKinley was asked to lead a church that was founded in 1857 but had dwindled to a few faithful members. His unique leadership style renewed the church, produced a steady membership growth, launched two Spanish ministries, and resulted in the recent opening of a food pantry. We are so excited to have these warm-hearted, specially-gifted men of God on campus, President Pinson said. We invite our pastors, church leaders, and all interested laity to join us in March for four days of spiritual challenges and vision. Arkansas youth pastor Joey Postlewaite (Sutton Free Will Baptist Church, Pocahontas) will also address attendees during the conference. A 2000 FWBBC graduate, Postlewaite brings the energy and creativity of the next generation of Free Will Baptist leaders to the platform Two FWBBC faculty members, Dr. Kevin Hester and Reverend Terry Forrest, will speak on the 2012 revitalization theme and bring a campus perspective to these important issues. Dr. Hester chairs the Theological Studies Department, while Reverend Terry Forrest serves as program coordinator for Pastoral Ministry. The Bible Conference/ FORUM12 schedule includes a number of workshops and break-out sessions on a variety of subjects. The music of FWBBC will be featured during the conference. The FWBBC Alumni Association invites all alumni to attend conference events. The classes of 1962 (50 years), 1987 (25 years) and 2002 (10 years) will be honored. Bible Conference/FORUM12 is free, with no charge to attend plenary sessions or workshops. Pre-Register at for a chance to win a Kindle Fire with digital downloads of speakers books. ##### Free Will Baptist Executive Committee Adopts Motion Regarding Racism 3 In response to a recent incident involving a small church in Kentucky which touched off a national flurry of condemnation in the press, the Free Will Baptist Executive Committee took the following action at their semiannual meeting when they met on December 7 in Nashville. Motion passed that we reaffirm the resolution deploring all forms of racism that was adopted at our 1995 convention and that we support the official statement issued by the National Association of Free Will Baptists Executive Office. Further, we recommend the Bible study, Racism, the Bible and the Church, published by Randall House Publications. For more information, please visit Racism, the Bible, and the Church: Free Will Baptist Publishing House Releases Free Study Nashville, TN, December 7, 2012 Randall House Publications, the publishing arm of the National Association of Free Will Baptists, has released a free, downloadable, small group study for churches titled Racism, the Bible, and the Church: A Biblical Perspective. Executive Secretary of the National Association of Free Will Baptists, Keith Burden noted, We

are encouraged by the Kentucky church reversing its previous decision regarding interracial couples. Christians should love, accept, and respect people of various ethnicities. Randall House CEO Ron Hunter stated, Free Will Baptists believe in the authority and supremacy of Scripture, and the Bible has a good deal to say about the sin of racism. As the publisher for Free Will Baptists we take seriously our mission to bring the relevance of God s Word to everyday life." This new, free study for churches and individuals answers important questions such as: How does the Bible define race? Where did all the different languages and cultures come from? Is God guilty of racism? What about being unequally yoked? How are we supposed to treat people that are different from us? To download the free study, go to For more information, or for media questions, please contact Matt Markins, Randall House Marketing Director at matt.markins@randallhouse.com. For more information on Randall House go to Hunter VP of PCPA Randall House Executive Director and CEO Ron Hunter was elected as vice-president, a voluntary position, of the Protestant Church-owned Publishers Association (PCPA), according to Gary Mulder, PCPA Executive Director. Mulder stated, "We have found that Ron's contributions at PCPA meetings have been consistently thoughtful and insightful, and that he shows an ability to contribute to Christian publishing in very helpful and insightful ways." PCPA is an association of denominationally owned publishing houses (such as Lifeway, Nazarene Publishing House, Wesleyan Publishing House, and Randall House) that meets twice a year to share trends, solutions, and research. As an officer of PCPA, Hunter will devote a handful of hours each year with the executive committee planning the agenda, discussing budgets, and planning for the business sessions. Thirtyfive publishers comprise the membership of PCPA. The CEOs of the denominational publishing houses elected Hunter for a twoyear term. Ron reflects, Randall House and Free Will Baptists receive tremendous benefits and insights from other denominational publishers in biannual PCPA meetings. To be elected by veteran leaders is truly an honor and I look forward to representing Free Will Baptists in this voluntary capacity knowing how much it also helps my role as Executive Director of Randall House. FWBBC Student Named Best Senator at Tennessee Intercollegiate Legislature NASHVILLE, TN The 42 nd General Assembly of the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature (TISL) met November at the State Capitol and elected Free Will Baptist Bible College junior Frank Thornsbury as Best Senator for the 2011 session. The model legislature which originated in is conducted by college students from across Tennessee and provides students with an education about state government and an opportunity to express their opinions on state issues. Frank Thornsbury at TSL Mr. Thornsbury, a 20-year-old History major from Kentucky, led a four-person delegation from FWBBC as the college participated in its first TISL event. Other FWBBC students in the legislative team included freshman Collin Lane (Arkansas) who served as alternate senator, sophomore Bethany Coats (South Dakota) who functioned as a higher education lobbyist, and junior Daniel Coker (Mississippi) who served as a representative. This was a first for all of us, Thornsbury said. It was an exciting four days, almost magical, as we prepared legislative bills and interacted with serious-minded students from 60 colleges regarding political and ethical issues of the day, knowing that some of the legislation we prepared would be presented to the Tennessee General Assembly. Many TISL bills from previous years have, in fact, become law. What a great experience! I m looking forward to the 2012 session and an even greater involvement by FWBBC students. The FWBBC administration and staff encouraged student participation in TISL. Dr. Jon

Forlines, vice president for student services, arranged funding for the Thornsbury-led delegation. The session days were long and full, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and extending to 9:00 p.m. In addition to winning Best Senator designation by his TISL peers, Frank Thornsbury was named to the Committee on Higher Education and appointed to the Election Commission. He was aggressive on the Senate floor, speaking repeatedly, debating and discussing issues to the point that he became known as The Face of conservative religious colleges. I felt right at home confronting colleagues in open debate, Thornsbury said, and for that, I credit all the C-Span I ve watched since age 14. The world of public policy needs more individuals with a jurisprudence guided by biblical truth. My greatest experience at TISL was being named Best Senator on the Senate floor. While some self-gratification was involved, the overwhelming sense of representing FWBBC well trumped all other emotions. Mr. Thornsbury serves as president of the FWBBC Student Body. His plans for 2012 TISL participation include writing more bills for the legislature and leading a larger delegation of FWBBC students to the State Capitol. Since day one of my FWBBC Student Body presidency, he said, it has been my goal to build up our community domestically and to share that community of faith and learning on a local, national, and global stage. Attending TSIL is the first step in our reaching out to a lost and dying world that desperately needs to hear the Good News. Nicene Faith Book Includes Chapter by President Pinson NASHVILLE, TN A new book titled Evangelicals and Nicene Faith: Reclaiming the Apostolic Witness includes a 23-page chapter by Free Will Baptist Bible College president Matt Pinson. The 16- chapter, 272-page paperback edited by Timothy George, dean of Beeson Divinity School and a senior editor of Christianity Today, was published in October 2011 by Baker Publishing Group. Dr. George said, Evangelicals and Nicene Faith: Reclaiming the Apostolic Witness is a fascinating collection of essays by first-rate scholars from various evangelical traditions. What is surprising is how each one affirms the abiding validity and relevance of the Nicene faith for the life of the church today. Commenting on chapter eight written by President Pinson, Dr. George said, Dr. Matthew Pinson has written a superb essay, Confessional, Baptist, and Arminian, in which he surveys the importance of Nicene belief within the General-Free Will Baptist Tradition. He traces this trajectory through early Baptist pioneers like Thomas Grantham and Joseph Hooke as well as their spiritual descendants in America. Dr. George continued, Dr. Pinson is one of the leading Baptist scholars, and he illuminates his own ecclesial heritage by placing it in continuity with the Great Tradition of historic Christianity. In doing so, he aptly illustrates this famous statement by the late Jaroslav Pelikan in whose memory we have dedicated this book: Tradition is the living faith of the dead; traditionalism is the dead faith of the living. The book grew out of a 2009 conference, The Will to Believe and the Need for Creed: Evangelicals and the Nicene Faith, at Beeson Divinity School at which President Pinson spoke. Pinson s 5 chapter in the book is joined by contributions from scholars such as Timothy George, Gerald Bray, Thomas Oden, and Ralph Wood. Dr. Pinson said, I am delighted to have a chapter in this book, and especially excited that the Free Will Baptist story can be told in this wider evangelical venue. Dr. Pinson is frequently published in professional theological journals. He has written two books A Free Will Baptist Handbook (1998) and The Washing of the Saints Feet (2006) and served as general editor for two others: Four Views of Eternal Security (2002) and Perspectives on Christian Worship: Five Views (2006). He also wrote a pamphlet in the Heritage Series titled Free Will Baptists and Church Government (2008) for the Free Will Baptist Historical Commission. He is a member of the Commission for Theological Integrity of the National Association of Free Will Baptists. 6 (WMO), and plan WMO initiatives for During a celebratory dinner on September 12, Interim Director of Development Sam McVay honored Mark Price, Jimmy Aldridge, and Tom Hughes, five-year veterans of the ambassador program. At the time of the session, Free Will Baptists had given $476,800 for overseas evangelistic efforts through the 2011 WMO. This is the second largest WMO in history, exulted one ambassador. Even in the midst of a recession, Free Will Baptist people have proven faithful! As ambassadors discussed the program and methods for increasing participation, they expressed surprise and disappointment that less than 500 of the 2,400 Free Will Baptist churches in the denomination actually participate in the annual WMO. That must change. We need to involve more churches, one gentleman challenged. At the conclusion of the meeting, the ambassadors voted to set the 2012 WMO goal at $650,000. Perhaps even more significant, said Kiley Hawkins, IM s development manager, was the determination these men expressed to involve more churches. The ambassadors set a goal to motivate 650 churches to participate in the WMO in McVay stated, This was my first time to be involved so closely with the ambassadors. These men and women dedicated their lives to the cause of global evangelism and their influence continues to make an incredible impact, inspiring people to make sure every woman, man, and child has an opportunity to hear the gospel. We are blessed to have this team leading our WMO effort. The 2012 ambassador team is Jimmy and Janie Aldridge (Alabama and Mississippi), Earnie and Jean Deeds (Oklahoma), Galen and Barbara Dunbar (South Carolina), Tom and Nancy Hughes (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, and Northwest District), Mark and Deanna Price (Ohio), Norman and Bessie Richards (Kentucky), David and Pat Shores (Illinois), Henry and Virginia VanKluyve ( North Carolina and Tennessee), Earl and Debbie White (West Virginia), and Rodney and Mary Yerby (Alabama). 7 New Address: News for publication in the Menorah is to be received by the 25 th of the month. The mailing address is Gene Norris, 4166 Maplewood Meadows Avenue, Grand Blanc, MI News From Spain I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5) During these past weeks, our family has been faced with the reality that our ways are not God's ways. We received news right before Christmas that we will be staying in the States longer than we expected. Our January 3 departure for Spain was postponed until the Mission has sustainable funds. The financial situation is bad...far worse than it s ever been. But we are not alone. Every one of our FWBIM missionaries who is on stateside assignment now is also facing this same challenge. They, too, will have to remain in the States, instead of returning to their fields of service. There are three new missionary families who were packing for a January departure to a creative access country when they got the message. And there are several others who are stateside who have been given the same grim news. We are all greatly affected. But we are not alone. We have you, our faithful supporters, who will stand behind us during this challenging time. Many of you already give sacrificially to missions and we are thankful that God has used many of you over the years to supply needs. Now is the time to do all that we can so that we can give all that we can. But we are not alone. God has promised to never leave or forsake us. His heart beats for a dying world, full of people who haven t yet called upon His name to be saved. He has not forsaken us, even though we are discouraged about the current financial crisis. And He has not forsaken the wonderful people in Spain who are still waiting to hear the Gospel message. Why don t you start out the new year by making a commitment to give a sacrificial gift each month to missions? (You can read the full news release from FWBIM at: /board-postpones-missionarydeployments) Tim, Kristi, Alejandro, Ana Johnson News From The U.P. Fall has come and gone. The change of seasons is a reminder to me that time does not stand still and is even running out. There is so much for us to do for Christ, and we are unsure of how much time we have to do it. We had a great 9/11 Patriotic Service with Bro. Richard Atwood as our speaker. We had visitors that we are following up on. We just had our fall revival services with Rev. Robert Helms from Chandler, Indiana as our preacher. He did a great job and God used him in our church to challenge us about serving our Lord with a passion. We had special services every night of revival with Cheryl Dawn of Child Evangelism Fellowship. She loves children and was well received by our kids. We saw lots of decisions made for Christ during our revival. I always like to tell you about those who have accepted Christ as their personal Savior. Twentyseven-year-old Randy Simmons asked Jesus to come into his heart and save his soul on soul-winning visitation, Monday, October 3 rd. His wife Amanda got assurance of her salvation and they have not missed a service since. They have three sweet children that now will grow up in a Christian home and will be raised in church. Pray for the Simmons family as they grow in their faith. The Simmons family represents thousands who are looking for Christ. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has many people, entire families that have never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ. God is leading us to plant other churches in the U.P. Our church wants to be a church-planting church. We currently live and serve in Gwinn. Sawyer FWB Church is in Gwinn on the old K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. We are located 20 miles south of the city limits of the city limits of Marquette, Michigan. We also have a burden for Escanaba, Michigan. Pray for us as we prayerfully try to consider what God would have us to do. -Greg and Lea Floars family- Rev. Tommy Swindoll Family Leaving Michigan New Minister of Young Adults Hired! 7 Donelson Fellowship, Nashville, TN--We are delighted that Tommy Swindol has been called to be our new Minister of Young Adults. The church voted on this in a called church conference on December 4 following our KALEO service, and Tommy has accepted the job. He and his wife, Jessica, along with their two girls, Anna Claire & Emily, will be moving to Nashville later this month, and Tommy s first day on the job will be January 1.
