1 THE BOOK OF ROMANS FREEDOM! Message 16 (8:1-15) Pat Shaughnessy, Teacher I. We have come to that chapter in Romans which R.A. Torrey referred to as G P. A. In our study of Romans, we have just been through the of chapter And Romans 8 is the H P for every Christian who has gone through the storm of Romans This is a good spot for me to say as clearly as I can: To really appreciate Romans 8, you have to be. 3. Sick of what? Sick and tired of trying to live for Jesus in the all by yourself. B. Here we find ourselves in the hands of the Blessed (The Holy Spirit). 1. The Holy Spirit has only been mentioned times up until now in the Book of Romans. 2. But He is mentioned times in this chapter! 3. 2 5. Why? Because God teaches us in this chapter that we can experience a life that is by His Holy Spirit. 6. Because God not only says we experience a consistent walk with Him on a daily basis, but that s exactly what He is committed to producing in us and that s called. II. The first thing Paul finds is security. (Vs. 1) A. When Paul throws in the towel and his condition, grace is and God says: Paul there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 1. The born-again believer can never lose his or her salvation, no matter how he or she! 2. Why not? Because my salvation did not depend upon me in the. 3. And it doesn t depend upon me now or in the. 4. I didn t have anything to do with getting myself and I don t have anything to do with myself saved. B. The next thing we find is freedom. 1. The moment you became a Christian, you were set free from what Paul calls here: The of sin and death. 2. Now, what is the Law of sin and death? It s the power of the sin nature which is at work in each one of us and over which we have no power in ourselves. 3. The word Law here is not used to describe a commandment, but a. 4. 3 5. In essence, God says to the old sin nature: You have no to this person. He belongs to Me now. And I am going to provide him with power by the power in him, because I will now live in him and overcome in him. 6. So, Paul finds security and Internal. III. Now, in vss. 3 & 4 Paul tells us he finds a new internal to live the Christian life. A. These verses emphasize that we could not perfectly as human beings but what man couldn t do, God! 1. So, what God did was to make possible a life for those who would walk by His indwelling. 2. So, the wretched man in chapter 7 finds in chapter He finds: a) E security. b) I freedom. c) And a new internal in the Person of the Holy Spirit. B. Now, in vs. 5, we see domination. 1. God is teaching in this section that a person becomes a Christian he is under the of the old nature. 2. But after a believer his life is to be lived under the domination or of the Holy Spirit. 3. Paul is saying that the Christian is to be habitually dominated or by the Holy Spirit of God. 4. The old nature continues to try to master us, and occasionally does gain control of us if we it to. 4 5. But we do not walk after the old nature of the flesh. C. That means that the power it took to raise Christ is at this very moment and in operation in you and me! 1. Now, in vss Paul tells us things we can expect as sons of God when we are in a Spirit-controlled mindset. IV. First, as a son or daughter of God we can expect by God. (vs. 14) A. The Holy Spirit of God is to us as a son or daughter of God to us in every single of our lives. 1. He will us to understand the Word of God. 2. The New English Bible translates vs. 14 this way: All who are by the Spirit of God 1. Because when you and I are to the Holy Spirit s control in our lives, we are with Him and then, He can us where He wants us in terms of our growth. (sanctification) 2. The struggle comes in the area of whether we ll let Him drive and our lives or whether we want the. 3. But when we turn the wheel over to Him, we can completely in knowing He s in control. V. Vs. 15 tells me that I can also expect with God. A. Paul says we are not to sin anymore. 1. I can say to the old nature now. 2. Timothy says that the children of God have received, not a spirit of but a spirit of love and power and a sound. B. Instead of a spirit of fear, Paul says the sons of God have received a spirit of. 1. The little adopted child has the of having been. 2. Abba is Aramaic (that s the language Jesus spoke when He was on earth) a) It s Aramaic for! b) It literally mean daddy. 2. That s all under the old life. D. I think what Paul is teaching us here is that sons of God enjoy an relationship with their new Father. 1. The point is that one of the things we can expect as of God is with our Father. 2. He wants His children to their relationship with Him. 3. To feel no. 4.
