A Prayer for Collaboration O God, You enlighten us with your charity, and enliven us with your grace; You guide us by your wisdom and give us hope for the future; You call us each by name. As parishioners of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist and St. Peter Church, You have brought us together for Holy Mass. May our prayers and praises be pleasing to You. Transform us by Your mercy, and make us one in Your love. Help us to use the gifts You have given us to proclaim Your Gospel, and to serve our neighbors, so that one day we may share together the good things You promise to those who love You. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen. 5 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we can tell by the change in weather we experienced in the last week or so, Autumn is upon us. Fall is always such a great time for me. I love the sights and the smells: leaves changing, apple pies and cobblers and crisps, pumpkin-spice everything. I love the football games and the cooler weather, which allows me to wear sweaters from my collection. I love being wrapped in a blanket with a good book and some hot apple cider. I love the soups and chili that accompany this time of year. There is so much to love about the Autumn Season. Let s commit to taking our time to enjoy the beautiful, wonderful things about this time, and to give thanks to God for these many blessings. From Father Sheridan Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Any pets are welcome, so long as they are accompanied by their humans! Please make sure your pets are either in a crate or on a leash, so that they don t try to run off with each other. Finally, I would like to offer our sympathies and prayers to the families and friends of Eleanor Pennell, Richard C. Kennedy, and John Rose, all of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, who have recently died. May the Lord grant them eternal rest in His Kingdom, as He grants comfort and consolation to those who mourn. Have a blessed week. Peace ~ Fr. Sheridan October, which begins Monday, is the month for two important things: The Month of the Rosary and Respect Life Month. It is appropriate that these two things coincide, for it is most especially from Mary, the Queen of the Rosary, that we learn to value and respect life, and to welcome the life of a child, even when it is inconvenient or confusing. In these days of October, let us pledge to pray the Rosary more often, especially for the intention, during this month, of the preservation and respect of human life in all its stages from conception to natural death. Blessing of Pets On Saturday, October 6th, Fr. Sheridan will offer a Blessing for our beloved pets at 10:00 AM in the Memorial Garden on the Basilica grounds. The Memorial of Saint Francis is on Thursday, October th, however, Fr. Sheridan is offering this blessing on the following Saturday for the convenience of all Parishioners. Please make sure your pet is on a leash. This week also brings the Feast of Saint Francis, who is one of the most beloved saints, on October th. He is the saint for whom our Holy Father, Pope Francis has taken his name. He is most well-known as the founder of the Order of Friars Minor, and its later divisions, more commonly known as the Franciscans. He is remembered for his concern for the poor and the needy. He is also well-loved for his care for the earth and all of God s creatures. Therefore, in his honor we will be having the Blessing of Pets this year. To accommodate the largest number of interested parishioners, it will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM in the Memorial Garden on the grounds of the

Enjoy! As many of you are aware from previous years, each classroom does an innovation activity each week. Innovation engage our students in activities that are based on inquiry, problem solving, and cross-curricular events. Simply put, the students are given a problem, materials, and time frame and must brainstorm, collaborate, and do some trial and error to find their best solution to the problem. These activities have prepared our students and teachers to become more involved in the diocesan initiative toward STREAM schools. As the year progresses, so will our involvement in this initiative. We are excited to be a part of this initiative and looking forward to the academic and social growth our students will maintain.

9 Catechesis on the Holy Mass by Fr. Sheridan I once heard a beautiful reflection on Catholic Radio from a commentator speaking about receiving Holy Communion. He stated that, after we receive our Lord in the Eucharist, we then take a moment to place our head in the bosom of the Lord. He was making reference, of course, to St. John, the Beloved Disciple, who reclined at the bosom of Jesus at the Last Supper (cf. John 1:2). Likewise, when we join Jesus at the Banquet Table to join in the Eucharistic Feast, we are able to recline close to His Most Sacred Heart. After receiving Holy Communion, the whole congregation enters into silence, so that we can be close to the Lord, to place our heads in His bosom and our lives in His Hands. Therefore, it is imperative that people remain in the Church after Communion, even until the end of Mass. How rude we would consider a guest in our home who eats and runs. So, why should we treat our Lord with such disdain and disrespect? He wants us to enter into the silence and to become aware of His presence all around us and within us. Mass does not end at Communion. So, PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE EARLY! Wedding Anniversary Mass Couples observing their 25th, 0th, 50th and over wedding anniversaries will be honored at a wedding anniversary celebration at the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 2:00 PM. The celebration includes Mass, renewal of marriage vows, a personalized certificate for each couple, and a reception for the couples and their families. Please call the parish office for which you are a member to put your name on the list for the October Mass.
