Chaplain s Report 2016 This is my final report to you as your Chaplain. As you are likely aware, in October of 2016, I announced my intention to retire from full-time ministry, to resign my appointment as the Anglican Chaplain in Monaco, and to return to Canada to take up life there, in the Diocese of Quebec, as a retired Anglican priest. In my sermon on Sunday, 5 th March 2017, I admitted my eagerness to enter this next phase in my life. I well recall a retirement planning workshop I attended in the early 1970s, as a 20- something year old. The workshop leader told me that I would be ready to retire, a bit more than 40 years from then, when I reached the age of 65, in the year This seemed to me at the time, as far away as the moon! Well, the 40 years and more have now gone by, and gone by rather quickly I might add. Retirement is close at hand, as close as the 3 rd of July 2017, when Sparky and I will board a plane bound for Montreal! And to be entirely honest, I must admit, I can hardly wait! I am truly ready to retire. However, I know myself well enough to realise that once I move into my new home, no sooner than the last carton is unpacked, its contents stored away, the last picture is hung on the wall, the last book placed on a book shelf, I will sit down at the window with a cup of tea, and look out at the river at the edge of my property and say something like, The river is very nice, but it certainly is not the Mediterranean! My, how I do miss Monte-Carlo and the good people at Saint Paul s, and the lovely friends and wonderful times I have now left behind in Monaco. In other words, I am going to miss all of you very much, of this I am certain! In my previous reports for the annual meeting of our church, I ve taken pains to list the names of the many, many members of our community who contribute ever so generously of their time and resources in support of the mission and ministry of our church. This is always a somewhat foolhardy venture, far too easy to skip somebody by accident and inadvertently miss putting a name or two on the list. For this reason, I ve decided not to name names for this, my final report to you as your Chaplain. Allow me simply to express my sincere gratitude to all of you who help in one way or another, if only just showing up when you can, on Sunday mornings, and lending the strength of your prayer to our common worship of the Lord. You know who you are and, hopefully, you also know just how very dear you are to me. It has been a remarkable privilege to serve at Saint Paul s as your Chaplain. I sincerely appreciate the many words of encouragement, the many kindnesses, the warmth of friendship, over the past nine years, and, most importantly, the faith we share in Jesus Christ our true Lord. The Church Council is experiencing something of a golden age where harmony and enthusiasm is concerned. And from this place of strength, the Council has now begun the work of recruiting and calling the next priest who will have the honour of serving as your Chaplain. I wish the Council God speed in this endeavour, and I pledge the support of prayer for my successor and for you the people of Saint Paul s a church family I long ago described as a community of Light on the Côte d'azur. May indeed the Light of your faith ever continue to serve as a source of solace, comfort and strength to the English speaking community in Monaco and well beyond the borders of this Principality, reaching out to every corner of this broken world of ours where there are so many in need of generous concern, so many in need of Light, of Hope and of God s Peace. The Very Reverend Father Walter H. Raymond O.G.S Anglican Chaplain in Monaco

President s Report 2016 Every day we are faced with choices and decisions which affect not just our lives, but our characters and our relationship with God and with those around us. It is not always easy to make the right choice, the Christian choice, it is not always easy to know which is the Christian choice, but we as Christians are obligated to make that choice so that our lives reflect the faith that we profess. We cannot expect people to believe us and follow us if we do not practice that which we preach, or even want to know more about our faith if we cannot even bother to behave in a Christian and loving manner. As J.C. Watts put it: Everyone tries to define this thing called Character. It s not hard. Character is doing what s right when nobody s looking. It is really not easy, but in God we can find the strength and the moral support we need to encourage and sustain us on our path. He is always there for us, and especially when we least feel His presence in our lives. The individual reports in this year s AGM Report are most encouraging, a tribute to our community which is active and thriving and helping those in need, both known and unknown. Let us continue the good work in God s vineyard and trust in Him to bring about the bountiful harvest. An old man told his grandson, My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy and truth. The boy thought about it, and asked, Grandfather, which wolf wins? The old man quietly replied, The one you feed. The Wardens Report 2016 Frank Megginson Association President 2016 was for us another year of continuity, of reinforcing and developing the positive changes of the previous years. St Paul s is becoming ever more vibrant, ever more community-based with the number of volunteers increasing consistently. It has been a pleasure to see many well-established faces as well as increasing numbers of new families with children who represent the future generation of St Paul s. We would like to give thanks for all the work carried out by many people behind the scenes in 2016 to make the church a more well-organized, harmonious and spiritual place to worship; your efforts are hugely appreciated. We would also like to renew our thanks for the vergers, Francois and Anna Cataldo who continue to help make our church run like clock-work. Their endless enthusiasm and cheerful faces make it a joy to have them around. Our final thanks go to Father Walter who, as ever, has participated actively throughout the year in spreading the Ministry of St Paul s and to the members of our Committee without whom the day-to-day running of the church would not be possible. Safeguarding Report 2016 Rupert Katritzky and Tim Humphreys 2016 was an important year for Safeguarding. St. Paul s Monaco adopted a Safeguarding policy on 5 th June 2016, this is displayed on the library noticeboard. We were audited on 5 th September 2016, and passed. No incidents were reported in 2016 (or before). The following members have had and passed their safeguarding checks the two wardens (Tim Humphreys and Rupert Katritzky) and the Sunday School teacher (Mirella Favory). The safeguarding policies of non-church users of the library are currently being assessed. Rupert Katritzky, Safeguarding Officer

Secretary s Report 2016 The 2016 Electoral Roll has been available for consultation over the past few weeks, as required before each AGM. During the year, five people were enrolled as new members: Mr. and Mrs. Simon Benjamin, Mrs. Manuela Mattes-Thacker, Mrs. Shiu-Ni Maria Tu and Mrs. Mirella Favory. Two of our members have moved away from Monaco and, sadly two have died: Mr. Michael McKee and Mr. Willem Boogerman. Below is a summary of 2015/2016 : Chaplaincy Association Chaplaincy Association Start of year New members Leavers (3) (2) (2) Departed (2) (2) 0 0 Corrected status (1) 26 (30) End of year Steward Report 2016 Philippa Casey Church Secretary Stewardship donations are made using numbered envelopes available in boxes (at the back of the church) with one envelope available for each of the 52 Sundays in the year. The regularity of stewardship donations helps our Treasurer set a budget for the coming year. In 2016, 23 members of our church used the numbered stewardship envelopes to make their donations in support of the mission and ministry of our church, with the following results: Number of envelopes Amount collected 16,391 15,154 (-10.5%) Average annual donations Average weekly donations Donations break down as follows: 9 people used stewardship envelopes to give donations averaging under 5 per week. 6 people used envelopes to give donations averaging between 8 and 19 per week. 3 people used envelopes to give donations averaging between 28 and 40 per week. 1 person used envelopes to give donations averaging 50 per week. If you are not using stewardship envelopes now, please consider adopting this discipline and help yourself to one of the boxes of numbered envelopes available at the back of the church. If you are using numbered envelopes for your donations in support of the ministry and mission of our church, determine where your weekly donations fit in the 4 groups of average donations above, and try to rise to the challenge in 2017 of joining the next group (higher average) of weekly stewardship donors! To all of those in our church community who do make use of the numbered stewardship envelopes, kindly accept the expression of our sincere gratitude for making regular use of the envelops to support Saint Paul s Church in our collective mission and ministry. Rupert Katritzky Warden

St. Pauls Sunday Club Sunday Club team: Mirella Favory and myself, Nicole Feaster, have teamed up to provide a fun, safe and an educational environment for children on Sundays. Mirella has created the learning curriculum that we follow each Sunday, with a new theme each week, while I and the parent volunteers assist her in facilitating the lessons and adding art projects. Activities and Events: Although this year has seen a reduction of Sunday club activities after the departure of Jonny Richardson and some of the children getting older, the Sunday club team have done their best to continue on past traditions. This years big event for Sunday club was our Nativity play. We followed the traditional biblical script of the birth of Jesus and had over 15 kids involved. We had to change the date of the play and delay it by a week because we needed more time to rehearse and more kids would have been able to participate since we changed the date. All the parents were very helpful, in addition to Mirella, in helping the kids learn their roles and organize the costumes. On Sundays, we have on average 4-8 kids during the school term participating in the Sunday club while the adults are in church. We occasionally have parents of young or new children join us for Sunday club as well. The kids were also very much involved in helping St. Pauls at the Kermesse, helping man the churches coffee and cake stand, clearing plates, washing, and cleaning up tables. For Shrove Tuesdays pancake supper, many of the children from Sunday club helped cook over 300 pancakes crepes and help supported and raise money for the Diabetes UK, encouraging Ben and Emily on their ambitious endeavours. Over 850 euros was raised that night. Throughout the year, we had a few Sunday were the children were involved in saying the prayers and participating in the service. I get great feedback from this as it gives the children ownership in the church service and teaches them great life skills in public speaking and presenting. Also, the parents love seeing them up in front of the church participating. It has been a pleasure helping to organize Sunday club this year and we are all looking forward to another great year of Sunday Club activities. Nicole Feaster Sunday Club Leader House Committee Report 2016 Work on the two significant projects planned for St Paul s in 2015 was started in The first project related to the replacement of the current, highly inefficient oil-fired central heating and hot water system with a state-of-the-art system. This new air-source heat-pump system was installed in November and has resulted in a plentiful supply of hot water with reduced running costs and an improved carbon footprint for the church. The second major project was for the installation of the lift from road level down to the library. After a considerable amount of time and effort negotiating with the Monaco authorities, planning permission was granted in June and building works were started in September. The oil tank was broken up and removed from the lift site and the necessary structural works to accommodate the lift were carried out. In the library, the back staircase to the emergency exit was removed and the floor level and walls were adjusted to allow for easy wheel-chair access. The lift itself was ordered and is due for delivery and installation in Tim Humphreys House Committee Chairman

Charitable Donations Committee (CDC) Report as of March 3, 2017 The Charitable Donations Committee (the CDC) was established in There are six members of the CDC: Father Walter; John Watton; Samantha Lewis, Sara Megginson, Mary de Vachon, and Stephen Kenyon-Slade (Chairman). The CDC meets at least four times each calendar year. During 2016, the CDC met on 8 March, 7 June, 20 September and 13 December. The first meeting for 2017 is scheduled for March 7. The duties of the CDC are to decide and manage the distribution of those funds of the Church which are annually agreed by the Council for charitable donations (including funds which are raised for charitable donations, reporting and oversight of the France Amétis Fund, and funds raised at the annual Ecumenical Kermesse). The 2016 CDC annual budget was 20,000. Furthermore, donations of 8,911 were received from, and through the efforts of, members of the Church, and these funds were added to the amount the CDC was able to donate. It is noted that, in addition to the donations approved by the CDC (and listed below), we should remember that several members of the St. Paul s community gave generously of their own accord to good causes related to the Church and/or supported by the Church. During 2016, the CDC approved the following charitable donations: From the proceeds of Kermesse Donations ( 5,300) Fourneau Economique 2,000 Mairie de Beausoleil 200 Mairie de Monaco 200 Past Claudel 2,100 Local Beneficiaries 800 From the proceeds of the CDC Budget of 20,000, plus donations of 8,911 referred to above ARocha 500 OSLJ-Monaco Leprosy Appeal 3,000 Equador (TEC) 3,700 Gap Appeal (Nick Humphreys) 1,855 Bishops 2016 Lent Appeal 5,000 Revd. Bob Hurley Grenoble 1,000 Nothing But Nets (Emily Rolfe) 1,000 Anglican Alliance - refugees 2,000 iconnect refugees 2,000 Haiti School Appeal 960 Children & Future 2,500 Amadarche 2,000 Forneau Economique 2,000 iconnect 1,545 In reaching its decisions, the CDC tried to strike a balance between (i) supporting charitable initiatives of members of the Church community, and (ii) supporting charities within the Monaco region, and (iii) supporting international charities assisting people in need around the world. Finally, it is noted that in addition to the above donations, members of St. Paul s separately raised 12,000 for the Haiti School Appeal and approx. 6,000 for the Children & Future (No Finish Line), and approx. 5,000 for several other charities and causes, bringing the charitable activity of St. Paul s to around 55,000 in total. A wonderful effort. Stephen Kenyon-Slade Chairman, Charitable Donations Committee

Archdeaconry Synod Report 2016 The Archdeaconry Synod was held in one of the prettiest places I have ever been to, St Jacut in Brittany. The bay has the most spectacular tides. It is worth going to the Synod, just to appreciate the beauty. At the synod, we have various meetings, talks and Bible Studies. The Reverend Dr Richard Briggs led us in two Bible Studies, a very clever and brilliant humour filled hour each day on Jonah and Daniel. RB is obviously a great thinker and scholar who is a lecturer in Durham, another beautiful area of the world. We also heard from some very dedicated people, who spoke with passion about the Migrant crisis in Europe. The House of Laity had an interesting conversation on the appointment of priests. The majority of people thought that the Wardens should be involved at a much earlier stage of the appointment process. The 'powers that be' do not think that this is appropriate. I am sure that the House of Laity will not let this rest for now. If anyone has a view on this, please speak to me about it as I should be representing your views. Overall, Walter, Dani and I had a lovely few days catching up with all the other Anglican Churches in France over friendly meals. Father Walter and I were on the same same team as Bishop David Hamid and Francis (the Bishop's Chaplin) for the quiz night, along with David and Valerie from Menton and Peter from Nice. It was a great evening with questions and answers from Fifty Shades of Grey to Biblical references. Something for everyone! Synod representatives are elected for 3 years by our Church, my three years are sadly at an end, so if anyone from St Paul's Church wishes to represent us at the Synod, please let Father Walter know. I heartily recommend it. Samantha Stirling Archdeaconry Synod Delegate Choir Report 2016 This is the first full year that St Paul s choir has benefitted from the choral scholarship set up towards the end of We are very lucky to have Drew Hopkins, a very able tenor, well-versed in church music, to assist Gottfried Kappen and to act as cantor. Judging from the many appreciative comments from members of the congregation throughout the year, this change in our fortunes has certainly not gone unnoticed! At the beginning of March the local ecumenical community met in St Paul s for a Lenten service. Three singers from Nice opera joined us and, as well as music specifically set for choral evensong, we sang a beautiful anthem Jesus You Died for Me based on Mozart s clarinet concerto. Several new works were introduced to our repertoire during the year, such as William Byrd s Ave Verum Corpus and Holy Spirit, Gift Divine written for a melody by Tchaikovsky. Generally we work on three or four pieces of music at the same time, alternating easier, well-known anthems with new or more difficult works, which gives a good balance to our practice sessions. Soon after returning from our summer break, we began looking at music for the annual carol service and we concluded the choral year in great style singing versions of several traditional carols plus Sir David Willcocks arrangement of Quelle est cette Odeur Agréable?. The number of people in the choir on any given Sunday tends to fluctuate quite a lot and, at the moment, we do not have a permanent bass, so we d be glad of new recruits. If you are interested, please have a word with Gottfried or myself thank you. Patricia Cerrone Choir Secretary

Mother and Baby Group Report 2105 Since Sandra Coleridge started the Mother and Baby group 27 years ago, it has become so popular that we have added another morning so that it is twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. We are considering going back to once week, not due to lack of mothers but due to lack of volunteers. So, please, if anyone wishes to join our friendly team and give up one morning a week, please contact Vicky on oshea@libello.com. People continue to hear about the Group from other parents, from our Facebook page Mother & Baby Group at St Paul s, and from the St Paul s Church website, often contacting us by . We receive new visitors every month and it is always lovely when a new mother or father arrives, knowing no one, and leaves with play dates for the children and coffee dates for themselves. Our Christmas Party held at the beginning of December was a huge success. A special elf came with music, face-painting, games and balloon sculpting. This was followed by a visit from Father Christmas and presents for all the children. If you know any parents of preschool children, of any nationality or religion who might like to come and join us, please point them in the right direction and we shall be very happy to meet them. Library Report 2016 Vicky O Shea Mother & Baby Group Volunteer The library is much the same as last year with barely 30 members coming in. But I am very hopeful this number will increase with the installation of the lift. I have been putting in new books regularly, fiction, nonfiction and travel books preferably in paperback edition. Again, I must bring to the notice of the Church community that the books have not stopped " disappearing "! This is particularly shameful considering it is happening on the church premises! As the library runs on the subscription of the members (30 euros per year) we would really appreciate it if people spread the word about this wonderful facility. The library is open on SATURDAYS from am to Noon. We serve tea and coffee with biscuits to make it a relaxed atmosphere. The duplicate books are on sale on the top shelves and the open shelf marked " books for sale ". They are 1 euro for a paperback and 2 euros for a hardback. Stephanie Cooper, Margreet Wan and I take turns on Saturdays on a voluntary basis. New members are very welcome and so are donations of English books in good condition. The library phone number is but it is only available Saturday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to Noon. French Class Report 2015 Wibha Lele Librarian Joining the French class with Father Walter as an assistant few years ago, was the beginning of an adventure for me. When I was delegated the leadership of the group last year, I felt really thrilled about it. First and foremost because it s a group where a sense of belonging and an eagerness to learn prevails; and also, because I like challenge and very much enjoy teaching the French language. We meet on Wednesdays at 10hr30 until noon. There are about 15 members and 7-8 are present on a weekly basis. Lessons in only include the study of French vocabulary and grammar, but there are also lots of conversation practice based on topics proper to the French culture. And we sing too! Lessons are done in an agreeable atmosphere and learning and teaching est un véritable Plaisir. Mirella Favory French Teacher
