1 WM/MC 632 Spiritual Power in Mission and Ministry Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Fall 2018 Instructor: Paul T. Martindale, D.Min. Course Description: Animism and animistic practices are no longer limited to far away mission fields. More and more people are coming to our churches out of Wicca, the New Age movement, Hinduism, and the cults. Many of these struggle with spiritual bondage and need assistance. On the mission field occult practices are prevalent. Converts to Christ are often in need of deliverance and inner healing in order to become healthy and functioning disciples of Christ. Folk religionists are those who combine their practice of a religion such as Islam with a belief in unseen spirits and powers. It is estimated that 85% of all Muslims resort to occult practices for help, blessing, protection, or to appease the spirits. Effective ministry to Folk Religionists must include an awareness of their animistic context including their beliefs, practices, worldview and the spiritual bondage that results. It is essential in working with new believers from these backgrounds that we be fully acquainted with spiritual warfare, power encounters, inner healing, and deliverance ministry in order to lead them out of their animistic worldview and its associated occult practices. Course topics will include: ministry in the Kingdom of God, western worldviews and spiritual power, power encounters, deliverance, spiritual warfare, inner healing, the relationship between power, allegiance and truth encounters, and the beliefs and practices of Folk Religionists. A number of case studies from the readings and from field experience will be presented. The format of the class will include discussions based upon assigned readings. Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Develop an awareness of the influence of animistic belief and practice upon a Folk Religionist s daily life. Identify and explain the principal assumptions and worldview unique to Folk Religions and animists. 2. Examine and analyze the spiritual challenges westerners face when relating to Folk Religionists and the nature and dynamics of ministry in animistic contexts. 3. Evaluate biblically an animistic society s beliefs and practices and develop a holistic and biblical view of ministry including a theology of spiritual gifts and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. 4. Identify the origins and limitations in their own culturally-conditioned worldview and how this might influence the communication of the gospel into a Folk religionist s frame of references. 5. Creatively interpret the gospel message into the worldview and thought categories of the Folk Religionist and evaluate the potential effectiveness of various contextual models of ministry to animists.

2 2 6. Articulate a theology of ministry in animistic contexts and a set of best practices for the church. Requirements of Course: 1. Research Project and Paper (for mission students) Choose a Folk Religionist people group, mystical sect of Islam, or animistic group and look for articles on the practices and institutions of Folk Religion. This will normally include saint veneration, holy places, special power events like festivals, healing rituals, spirit practitioners like Imams or Merabouts, pilgrimages, fortune tellers, amulets used, particular beliefs like evil eye, and rituals or objects used for blessing and protection. Describe their practices, institutions, beliefs, and spirit worldview. Try to determine from what has been published whether women, men, or both are the most common participants. Describe the spirit-worldview of this group or country and what aspects of the gospel message you think would be particularly relevant to them. Write this up in a paper of 6 to 8 pages in length, double-spaced, using 12 pt. type. Include a cover sheet listing your name, mailbox #, title of course, and the country name. Use endnotes or footnotes to cite sources and include a Bibliography listing all sources cited in the paper. This will constitute the first half of your Research Paper that is described below. On the cover page label this Research Paper, Part I. The second half of your Research Paper should be focused upon your theological and missiological response to Folk Religion in the people group, country, or sect you have chosen for the Research Project. Interacting with the reading from this course, now develop a theology of ministry with Folk Religionists. Address all relevant issues such as what constitutes a biblical worldview, your philosophy of ministry, and your idea of best practices for working in an animistic context. Include a section on how the Bible addresses the needs of Folk Religionists and how a western-secularized approach to ministry would need to be adapted or changed to fit the context of ministry. The paper should be double-spaced using 12 pt. type. It should be 6 to 8 pages in length with a cover sheet listing your name, mailbox #, title of course, and title of the paper. Use endnotes or footnotes to cite sources and include a Bibliography listing all sources cited in the paper. On the cover page label this Research Paper, Part II. 2. Research Project and Paper (for non-mission students) Another option is possible for those preparing for ministries in the church. Instead of the project and paper described above you may choose one of the course discussion topics such as inner healing, deliverance ministry, healing prayer, or spiritual warfare. Your project would be to do a literature search on that topic, discover how many different views there are in the church, describe the predominant view(s) within your church tradition, and write a project paper giving the exegetical support for various views on the use of this gift or ministry in the church. 2

3 3 The second project paper will then take this work one step further and you will develop a theology of this ministry for the church today as well as describe what are the best practices for this ministry. 3. Journal of Intercessory Prayer Read through Wesley s Duewel s Mighty Prevailing Prayer and record your experiences of intercessory prayer for others. Include insights that you are gaining from your reading of the text, experiences that you have related to the practice of intercession, and reflections as to how this is influencing your own spiritual life. The class will be broken out into small groups that will meet once a week for prayer together. Your journal should record at least one entry for each week of the semester. Your journal should be at least 12 pages in length. You will submit this to the professor on the last day of written work. 4. Final Exam There will be a final exam covering the lectures and readings in this course. The final exam will be scheduled during the final week of classes. 5. Reading of Textbooks and Articles On the last day for written work you must submit your reading list documenting all reading you completed for the course. 6. Attendance Perfect attendance is encouraged and will greatly enhance your ability to perform well on the exams and comprehend the daily readings. In consideration of others in the class please turn off your cell phone during the instructional period and refrain from doing or surfing the internet. 7. Grading Reading of assigned texts and articles 20% Research Paper Part I 15% Research Paper Part II 15% Journal of Intercessory Prayer 25% Final Exam 25% The Grading Scale used in this class is as follows: A+, ; A, 96-94; A-, 93-90; B+, 89-87; B, 86-84; B-, 83-80; C+, 79-77; C, 76-74; C-, 73-70; D+, 69-67; D, 66-64; D-, 63-60; F, Course Schedule of Topics: 1.
