1 THE ORDER FOR EVENING PRAYER DAILY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR OCT (THE TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.) Psalms 147, 148, 149, 150 The First Lesson Ezekiel 24 Canticle Cantate Domino (Psalm xcviii.) The Second Lesson 2Corinthians 11 Canticle Deus misereatur (Psalm lxvii) At the beginning of Evening Prayer the Minister shall read with a loud voice some one or more of these Sentences of the Scriptures that follow. And then he shall say that which is written after the said Sentences. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 St. John i. 8, 9. To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him; neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws which he set before us. Daniel ix. 9, 10. WHEN the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. Ezek. xviii. 27. Repent ye; for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. St. Matt. iii. 2. DEARLY beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly

2 grace, saying after me; A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation after the Minister, all kneeling. ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone, standing; the people still kneeling. ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins : He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him, which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. The people shall answer here, and at the end of all other prayers, Amen. Then the Minister shall kneel, and say the Lord's Prayer with an audible voice; the people also kneeling, and repeating it with him, both here, and wheresoever else it is used in Divine Service. THE LORD'S PRAYER OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.for thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

3 Then likewise he shall say, O Lord, open thou our lips. Answer. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Priest. O God, make speed to save us. Answer. O Lord, make haste to help us. Here all standing up, the Priest shall say, Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; Answer. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Priest. Praise ye the Lord. Answer. The Lord's Name be praised. Then shall be said or sung the Psalms in order as they be appointed. Then a Lesson of the Old Testament, as is appointed. PSALM 147 Laudate Dominum. O PRAISE the LORD, for it is a good thing to sing praises unto our God: / yea, a joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful. 2 The LORD doth build up Jerusalem, / and gather together the outcasts of Israel. 3 He healeth those that are broken in heart, / and bindeth up their wounds. 4 He telleth the number of the stars, / and calleth them all by their names. 5 Great is our Lord, and great is his power: / yea, and his wisdom is infinite. 6 The LORD setteth up the meek, / and bringeth the ungodly down to the ground. 7 O SING unto the LORD with thanksgiving: / sing praises upon the harp unto our God; 8 Who covereth the heaven with clouds, and prepareth rain for the earth, / and maketh grass to grow upon the mountains, and herb for the use of men; 9 Who giveth fodder unto the cattle, / and feedeth the young ravens that call upon him. 10 He hath no pleasure in the strength of an horse, / neither delighteth he in any man s legs. 11 But the LORD S delight is in them that fear him, / and put their trust in his mercy.

4 12 PRAISE the LORD, O Jerusalem: / praise thy God, O Sion. 13 For he hath made fast the bars of thy gates, / and hath blessed thy children within thee. 14 He maketh peace in thy borders, / and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat. 15 He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth; / and his word runneth very swiftly. 16 He giveth snow like wool, / and scattereth the hoar-frost like ashes. 17 He casteth forth his ice like morsels: / who is able to abide his frost? 18 He sendeth out his word, and melteth them: / he bloweth with his wind, and the waters flow. 19 He showeth his word unto Jacob, / his statutes and ordinances unto Israel. 20 He hath not dealt so with any nation; / neither have they knowledge of his laws. PSALM 148 Laudate Dominum. O PRAISE the LORD from the heavens: / praise him in the heights. 2 Praise him, all ye angels of his: / praise him, all his host. 3 Praise him, sun and moon: / praise him, all ye stars of light. 4 Praise him, all ye heavens, / and ye waters that are above the heavens. 5 Let them praise the Name of the LORD; / for he commanded and they were created. 6 He hath made them fast for ever and ever: / he hath given them a law which shall not be broken. 7 PRAISE the LORD from the earth, / ye dragons and all deeps; 8 Fire and hail, snow and vapour, / wind and storm, fulfilling his word; 9 Mountains and all hills; / fruitful trees and all cedars; 10 Beasts and all cattle; / creeping things and feathered fowls; 11 Kings of the earth, and all peoples; / princes and all judges of the world; 12 Young men and maidens together; / old men and children; 13 Let them praise the Name of the LORD; / for his Name only is excellent, and his glory above heaven and earth. 14 He shall exalt the horn of his people; all his saints shall praise him: / even the children of Israel, even the people that serveth him. PSALM 149 Cantate Domino. O SING unto the LORD a new song: / let the congregation of saints praise

5 him. 2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: / and let the children of Sion be joyful in their King. 3 Let them praise his Name in the dance: / let them sing praises unto him with timbrel and harp. 4 For the LORD hath pleasure in his people, / and adorneth the humble with salvation. 5 Let the saints be joyful with glory: / let them sing for joy upon their couches. 6 Let the praises of God be in their mouth, / and a two-edged sword in their hands; 7 To be avenged of the nations, / and to rebuke the peoples; 8 To bind their kings in chains, / and their nobles with links of iron; 9 To execute upon them the judgement that is written. / Such honour have all his saints. PSALM 150 Laudate Dominum. O PRAISE God in his sanctuary: / praise him in the firmament of his power. 2 Praise him in his mighty acts: / praise him according to his excellent greatness. 3 Praise him in the sound of the trumpet: / praise him upon the lute and harp. 4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: / praise him upon the strings and pipe. 5 Praise him upon the well-tuned cymbals: / praise him upon the loud cymbals. 6 Let every thing that hath breath / praise the LORD. Then shall be read distinctly with an audible voice the First Lesson, taken out of the Old Testament, as is appointed in the Calendar, except there be proper Lessons assigned for that day : He that readeth so standing and turning himself, as he may best be heard of all such as are present. And after that, shall be said or sung, in English, the Hymn called Te Deum Laudamus, daily throughout the Year. THE FIRST LESSON: EZEKIEL 24 24:1 In the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: 2 Son of man, write down the name of this day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day. 3 And utter a parable to the rebellious house and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD:

6 Set on the pot, set it on; pour in water also; 4 put in it the pieces of meat, all the good pieces, the thigh and the shoulder; fill it with choice bones. 5 Take the choicest one of the flock; pile the logs under it; boil it well; seethe also its bones in it. 6 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose corrosion is in it, and whose corrosion has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, without making any choice. 7 For the blood she has shed is in her midst; she put it on the bare rock; she did not pour it out on the ground to cover it with dust. 8 To rouse my wrath, to take vengeance, I have set on the bare rock the blood she has shed, that it may not be covered. 9 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the pile great. 10 Heap on the logs, kindle the fire, boil the meat well, mix in the spices, and let the bones be burned up. 11 Then set it empty upon the coals, that it may become hot, and its copper may burn, that its uncleanness may be melted in it, its corrosion consumed. 12 She has wearied herself with toil; its abundant corrosion does not go out of it. Into the fire with its corrosion! 13 On account of your unclean lewdness, because I would have cleansed you and you were not cleansed from your uncleanness, you shall not be cleansed anymore till I have satisfied my fury upon you. 14 I am the LORD. I have spoken; it shall come to pass; I will do it. I will not go back; I will not spare; I will not relent; according to your ways and your deeds you will be judged, declares the Lord GOD. 15 The word of the LORD came to me: 16 Son of man, behold, I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you at a stroke; yet you shall not mourn or weep, nor shall your tears run down. 17 Sigh, but not aloud; make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban, and put your shoes on your feet; do not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men. 18 So I

7 spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died. And on the next morning I did as I was commanded. 19 And the people said to me, Will you not tell us what these things mean for us, that you are acting thus? 20 Then I said to them, The word of the LORD came to me: 21 Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the yearning of your soul, and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword. 22 And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men. 23 Your turbans shall be on your heads and your shoes on your feet; you shall not mourn or weep, but you shall rot away in your iniquities and groan to one another. 24 Thus shall Ezekiel be to you a sign; according to all that he has done you shall do. When this comes, then you will know that I am the Lord GOD. 25 As for you, son of man, surely on the day when I take from them their stronghold, their joy and glory, the delight of their eyes and their soul's desire, and also their sons and daughters, 26 on that day a fugitive will come to you to report to you the news. 27 On that day your mouth will be opened to the fugitive, and you shall speak and be no longer mute. So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD. (ESV) CANTATE DOMINO: PSALM XCVIII. O SING unto the Lord a new song : for he hath done marvellous things. With his own right hand, and with his holy arm : hath he gotten himself the victory. The Lord declared his salvation : his righteousness hath he openly showed in the sight of the heathen. He hath remembered his mercy and truth toward the house of Israel : and all the ends of the world have seen the salvation of our God. Show yourselves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands : sing, rejoice, and give thanks. Praise the Lord upon the harp : sing to the harp with a psalm of thanksgiving.

8 With trumpets also and shawms : O shew yourselves joyful before the Lord the King. Let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is : the round world, and that dwell therein. Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the Lord : for he cometh to judge the earth. With righteousness shall he judge the world : and the peoples with equity. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. THE SECOND LESSON: 2CORINTHIANS 11 11:1 I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! 2 For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. 3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. 5 Indeed, I consider that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. 6 Even if I am unskilled in speaking, I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way we have made this plain to you in all things. 7 Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached God's gospel to you free of charge? 8 I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. 9 And when I was with you and was in need, I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain from burdening you in any way. 10 As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. 11 And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do! 12 And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of

9 righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. 16 I repeat, let no one think me foolish. But even if you do, accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. 17 What I am saying with this boastful confidence, I say not as the Lord would but as a fool. 18 Since many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast. 19 For you gladly bear with fools, being wise yourselves! 20 For you bear it if someone makes slaves of you, or devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or strikes you in the face. 21 To my shame, I must say, we were too weak for that! But whatever anyone else dares to boast of I am speaking as a fool I also dare to boast of that. 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one I am talking like a madman with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant? 30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying. 32 At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas was guarding the city of Damascus in order to seize me, 33 but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his hands. (ESV) DEUS MISEREATUR: PSALM LXVII. GOD be merciful unto us, and bless us : and shew us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us; That thy way may be known upon earth : thy saving health among all

10 nations. Let the peoples praise thee, O God : yea, let all the peoples praise thee. O let the nations rejoice and be glad : for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Let the people praise thee, O God : yea, let all the people praise thee. Then shall the earth bring forth her increase : and God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing. God shall bless us : and all the ends of the world shall fear him. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Then shall be sung or said the Apostle's Creed. I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth : And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholick Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen. And after that these Prayers following, all devoutly kneeling: the Minister first pronouncing with a loud voice, The Lord be with you. Answer. And with thy spirit. Minister. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Then the Minister, Clerks, and people shall say the Lord's Prayer with a loud voice. THE LORD'S PRAYER OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. 11 Then the Priest standing up shall say, O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. Answer. And grant us thy salvation. Priest. O Lord, save the Queen. Answer. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Priest. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness. Answer. And make thy chosen people joyful. Priest. O Lord, save thy people. Answer. And bless thine inheritance. Priest. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Answer. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. Priest. O God, make clean our hearts within us. Answer. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Then shall follow three Collects; the first of the day, which shall be the same that is appointed at the Communion; The second for Peace; The third for Grace to live well. And the two last Collects shall never alter, but daily be said at Morning Prayer throughout all the year, as followeth, all kneeling. THE COLLECT (THE TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.) LORD, we beseech thee to keep thy household the Church in continual godliness; that through thy protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE SECOND COLLECT AT EVENING PRAYER. O GOD, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. THE THIRD COLLECT, FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS. LIGHTEN our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. 12 A A PRAYER FOR THE CLERGY AND PEOPLE. ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels; Send down upon our Bishops, and Curates, and all Congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen. A A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM. ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise, that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests; Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. 22 CORINTHIANS XIII. THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.
