2 WELCOME... We welcome our visitors who are attending the Divine Liturgy at St. John s parish, and we pray that your participation has been enriched through word, and worship. We invite those visitors who are baptized and/or confirmed in the Armenian Church or are members of a church which is in communion with the Armenian Church to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. If you are a member of the Armenian Church and a newcomer to our community and would like information about our Christian Education program or any of our parish auxiliary groups, please call our office and we will be happy to respond to your questions. The Lord Jesus Christ loves you and desires that you share His love with others, making this holy community your spiritual home. MARRIAGES Arrangements for weddings in our holy sanctuary are to be made at least eight months in advance. Marriage preparation and counseling are required before the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Marriages are NOT celebrated during the season of Great Lent according to Armenian Church Canon Law. BAPTISMS AND CHRISMATIONS All Baptisms must be scheduled no less than two months in advance. At least one of the godparents must be a member of the Armenian Church, i.e. baptized in the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox faith. Baptisms are NOT celebrated during the season of Great Lent according to Armenian Church Canon Law. REGULATION OF SACRAMENTAL SERVICES In accordance with Diocesan discipline mandated by the Primate, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, all sacraments, e.g. funerals, weddings, baptisms and rites of Christian burial may only be administered in the church sanctuary, which has been consecrated for the celebration of these sacred rites. In this capacity, she will be championing the Armenian cause through various avenues, including teaching. To honor her humanitarian efforts for Armenia and Karabagh, Oakland University will establish a Chair of Global Studies and will sponsor a number of programs related to her ministry for Research and Education Advocacy for Children s Health (REACH). These programs will ultimately benefit Armenia and Karabagh. The following programs will take place, which are open to the general public. The local Armenian community are invited to take part. 5 TODAY S GOSPEL: John 1:1-17 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him, and cried, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'" And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. These were days that blessed us all and the DVD has been prepared for you to recapture the joy Vehapar brought to us. Copies are available in the bookstore for $20.00 each. ST. NERSESS SUMMER CONFERENCES 2009 Thoughts of warmer weather bring thoughts of the St. Nersess Summer Conferences held in New Rochelle, NY at the St. Nersess Seminary. Applications are now available. You can pick up your copy in the church lobby or go to the St. Nersess website and download a copy. Again this year, the St. Nersess Scholarship Fund sponsored by St. John s parishioners will pay for the students tuition. Remember do not send tuition in with application. This will last all afternoon from 12:30 pm until all the crosses have been placed. 8 EASTERTIDE: The Sacred Period that follows Easter The 50-day period from Easter Sunday to the Sunday of Pentecost (May 31) is called Eastertide (or Quinquagesima). The first 40 days of Eastertide culminate with the Feast of the Ascension celebrated on May 21. During this 40-day period, the Easter greeting in the Armenian Church outside the Divine Liturgy is: KRISDOS HARYAV EE MERELOTZ! ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍ ՅԱՐԵԱՒ Ի ՄԵՌԵԼՈՑ CHRIST IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD! Men of St. John s: Introducing Christ Renews His Parish You are invited to a spiritual weekend! This is your chance to be part of the first men s Christ Renews His Parish weekend. This is an incredible opportunity to renew your faith in Christ, reflect on what Christ has done in your life, and share this time with other men from our parish who are on a similar journey. Come prepared to have a good time and renew your heart with times of prayer, reflection, presentations, discussions, laughter, great food and fellowship. The dates of the weekend are May 16-17, 2009 and it will be hosted by St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Fenton, Michigan. Special Blessing Tables The sanctuary is need of three special wooden tables for conducting special blessing services and the distribution of Holy Communion. The design of tables will be similar to the beautiful candle table which graces our lobby area. In fact the same fabricator will be used to design these new tables with traditional Armenian motifs and designs. If you are interested in contributing toward this project please approach the pastor or call the office to speak with him.
