I had a wonderful time visiting with everyone, some 25+ homes. I m hopeful that more faithful will take advantage of this spiritual blessing. Thank you, everyone, for your kindness as I journeyed around central Connecticut. Fr. David FEAST DAY: The Great Feast of the Meeting of our Lord in the Temple (February 2nd) will be celebrated with Festal Vesperal Liturgy & Blessing of Candles on Thursday, February 1st at 6:00 p.m. followed by a festive Pot Luck supper. BLESSING OF VESTMENTS: On Sunday, February 4th we will bless our new purple Altar Server vestments at the end of Divine Liturgy. We thank Elaine & Forrest Hansen who contributed in memory of Olga & Edward Skotnicki, the Sisterhood, the Hromi s and others who gave to the Sisterhood Vestment fund. ORTHODOXY 101: We will be back at it with our classes; Thursday, February 8th at 10:30 a.m. and will continue with the Book of Isaiah. NEWLY ELECTED: The 2017 Parish Council, elected at the annual parish meeting, together with the officers for the Sisterhood and Men s Club will be blessed the end of Divine Liturgy on February 11th, subject to approval of the elections by His Eminence, Archbishop NIKON. All elected members are asked to be present for that service. MEATFARE SUNDAY: Meatfare Sunday (February 11th) is the last day on the Orthodox calendar which allows the consumption of meat and meat products. Our Sisterhood is planning once again to hold the Annual Meatfare Sunday Breakfast that morning following liturgy. Make plans now to join us for the feast before the fast! PARISH COUNCIL: The first meeting of the 2018 Parish Council will be held on Monday evening, February 26th at 7:00 P.M. All council members are reminded of the schedule change and asked to make every effort to attend the meeting. GENERAL CONFESSION: is normally held on the last Saturday of each month (except for lenten periods), following Great Vespers. All regular communicants should make every effort to attend each General. The next General will be held on after Pascha. The February charity collection is for Ancient Faith Radio. Ancient Faith Radio seeks to deepen and enrich the faith of Orthodox Christians around the world with streaming audio programming, live call-ins, and on-demand podcasts. They feature liturgical music from a variety of Orthodox traditions, as well as prayers, readings, lectures, and interviews. Ancient Faith Radio is a division of Ancient Faith Ministries, which also operates Ancient Faith Publishing under the auspices of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America. However, it is a pan-orthodox ministry and thus serves and supports all jurisdictions. They offer two 24 hour internet based Orthodox radio stations and also provide an extensive list of downloadable Orthodox Podcasts. Technology has opened the door for a worldwide radio ministry featuring the teachings and music of the historic Orthodox faith. He also foretold Mary s sufferings because of her son. (Luke 22:34-35) Anna also was present and, giving thanks to God she spoke of Jesus to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. (Luke 2:38) In the service of the feast of the Meeting of the Lord, the fact emphasized is that Christ, the Son and Word of God through whom the world was created, now is held as an infant in Simeon's hands; this same Son of God, the Giver of the Law, now himself fulfills the Law, carried in arms as a human child. Receive him, O Simeon, whom Moses on Mount Sinai beheld in the darkness as the Giver of the Law. Receive him as a babe now obeying the Law. For he it is of whom the Law and the Prophets have spoken, incarnate for our sake and saving mankind. Come1et us adore him! Let the door of heaven open today, for the Eternal Word of the Father, without giving up his divinity, has been incarnate of the Virgin in time. And as a babe of forty days he is voluntarily brought by his mother to the Temple, according to the Law. And the elder Simeon takes him in his arms and cries out: Lord now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, O Lord, who has come to save the human race - glory to Thee! (Vesper Verses of the Feast) FEASTDAY IN FEBRUARY: Meeting of The Lord (February 2): Forty days after Christ was born he was presented to God in the Jerusalem Temple according to the Mosaic Law. At this time as well his mother Mary underwent the ritual purification and offered the sacrifices as prescribed in the Law. Thus, forth days after Christmas, on the second of February, the Church celebrates the feast of the presentation called the Meeting (or Presentation or Reception) of the Lord. The meeting of Christ by the elder Simeon and the prophetess Anna (Luke 2:22-36) is the main event of the feast of Christ s presentation in the Temple. It was revealed to Simeon by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Christ (Luke 2:26) and, inspired by the same Spirit, he came to the Temple where he met the new-born Messiah, took him in his arms and said the words which are now chanted each evening at the end of the Orthodox Vesper service: Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word; for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation which Thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for the revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Thy people Israel. (Luke 2:29-32) The Vespers and Matins of the feast of the Meeting of the Lord are filled with hymns on this theme. The Divine Liturgy is celebrated with the lines from the canticle of Mary forming the prokeimenon and the words of Simeon being the verses for the Alleluia. The gospel readings tell of the meeting, while the Old Testamental readings at Vespers refer to the Law of the purification in Leviticus, the vision of Isaiah in the Temple of the Thrice-Holy Lord, and the gift of faith to the Egyptians prophesied by Isaiah when the light of the Lord shall be a revelation to the Gentiles. (Luke 2:32) The celebration of the Meeting of the Lord in the Church is not merely a historical commemoration. Inspired by the same Holy Spirit as Simeon, and led of the same Spirit into the Church of the Messiah, the members of the Church also can claim their own meeting with the Lord, and so also can witness that they too can depart in peace since their eyes have seen the salvation of God in the person of his Christ. Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, Full of Grace! From you shone the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, enlightening those who sat in darkness! Rejoice and be glad, O righteous elder; you accepted in your arms the Redeemer of our souls who grants us the resurrection. (Troparion) By Thy nativity, Thou didst sanctify the Virgin s womb. And didst bless Simeon s hands, O Christ our God. Now Thou hast come and saved us 3

6 through love. Grant peace to all Orthodox Christians, O only Lover of man. (Kontakion) It is customary in many churches to bless candles on the feast of the Meeting of the Lord. Protopresbyter Thomas Hopko The Orthodox Faith, Volume II: Worship Forgiveness Sunday In the Orthodox Church, the last Sunday before Great Lent the day on which, at Vespers, Lent is liturgically announced and inaugurated is called Forgiveness Sunday. On the morning of that Sunday, at the Divine Liturgy, we hear the words of Christ: "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses..." (Mark 6:14-15) Then after Vespers after hearing the announcement of Lent in the Great Prokeimenon: "Turn not away Thy face from Thy child for I am afflicted! Hear me speedily! Draw near unto my soul and deliver it!", after making our entrance into Lenten worship, with its special memories, with the prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian, with its prostrations words of reconciliation, the choir intones the Paschal hymns, filling the church with the anticipation of Paschal joy. What is the meaning of this rite? Why is it that the Church wants us to begin Lenten season with forgiveness and reconciliation? These questions are in order because for too many people Lent means primarily, and almost exclusively, a change of diet, the compliance with ecclesiastical regulations concerning fasting. They understand fasting as an end in itself, as a "good deed" required by God and carrying in itself its merit and its reward. But, the Church spares no effort in revealing to us that fasting is but a means, one among many, towards a higher goal: the spiritual renewal of man, his return to God, true repentance and, therefore, true reconciliation. The Church spares no effort in warning us against a hypocritical and pharisaic fasting, against the reduction of religion to mere external obligations. As a Lenten hymn says: In vain do you rejoice in no eating, O soul! For you abstain from food, But from passions you are not purified. If you persevere in sin, you will perform a useless fast. Now, forgiveness stands at the very center of Christian faith and of Christian life because Christianity itself is, above all, the religion of forgiveness. God forgives us, and His forgiveness is in Christ, His Son, Whom He sends to us, so that by sharing in His humanity we may share in His love and be truly reconciled with God. Indeed, Christianity has no other content but love. And it is primarily the renewal of that love, a return to it, a growth in it, that we seek in Great Lent, in fasting and prayer, in the entire spirit and the entire effort of that season. Thus, truly forgiveness is both the beginning of, and the proper condition for the Lenten season. One may ask, however: Why should I perform this rite when I have no "enemies"? Why should I ask forgiveness from people who have done nothing to me, and whom I hardly know? To ask these questions, is to misunderstand the Orthodox teaching concerning forgiveness. It is true, that open enmity, personal hatred, real animosity may be absent from our life, though if we experience them, it may be easier for us to repent, for these feelings openly contradict Divine commandments. But, the Church reveals to us that there are much subtler ways of offending Divine Love. These are indifference, selfishness, lack of interest in other people, of any real concern for them -- in short, that wall which we usually erect around ourselves, thinking that by being "polite" and "friendly" we fulfill God s commandments. The rite of forgiveness is so important precisely because it makes us realize be it only for one minute that our entire relationship to other men is wrong, makes us experience that encounter of one child of God with another, of one person created by God with another, makes us feel that mutual "recognition" which is so terribly lacking in our cold and dehumanized world. On that unique evening, listening to the joyful Paschal hymns we are called to make a spiritual discovery: to taste of another mode of life and relationship with people, of life whose essence is love. We can discover that always and everywhere Christ, the Divine Love Himself, stands in the midst of us, transforming our mutual alienation into brotherhood. As l advance towards the other, as the other comes to me we begin to realize that it is Christ Who brings us together by His love for both of us. And because we make this discovery and because this discovery is that of the Kingdom of God itself: the Kingdom of Peace and Love, of reconciliation with God and, in Him, with all that exists we hear the hymns of that Feast, which once a year, "opens to us the doors of Paradise." We know why we shall fast and pray, what we shall seek during the long Lenten pilgrimage. Forgiveness Sunday: the day on which we acquire the power to make our fasting true fasting; our effort true effort; our reconciliation with God true reconciliation. Father Alexander Schmemann Introduction to the DRE/OCA Forgiveness Sunday Vespers St. Nikolai Velimirovich On Forgiveness If your heart has been softened either by repentance before God or by learning the boundless love of God towards you, do not be proud with those whose hearts are still hard. Remember how long your heart was hard and incorrigible. Seven brothers were ill in one hospital. One recovered from his illness and got up and rushed to serve his other brothers with brotherly love, to speed their recovery. Be like this brother. Consider all men to be your brothers, and sick brothers at that. And if you come to feel that God has given you better health than others, know that it is given through mercy, so in health you may serve your frailer brothers. (Prologue, 31 March) 4

7 ON FASTING Fr. Thomas Hopko CLEAN WEEK Monday, Tuesday & Thursday, Feb. 19, 20 & 22; The Canon of St. Andrew of Crete - The canon is a dialog between St. Andrew and his soul. The ongoing theme is an urgent exhortation to change one s life. St Andrew always mentions his own sinfulness placed in juxtaposition to God s mercy, and uses literally hundreds of references to good and bad examples from the OT and NT to convince himself to repent. Wednesday, February 21; Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts - Great Lent is a season of repentance, fasting, and intensified prayer, and the Orthodox Church regards more frequent reception of communion as especially desirable at that time. However, the full Divine Liturgy has a joyful character not in keeping with the somberness of the season of repentance (Eucharist literally means "thanksgiving"). The Presanctified Liturgy is therefore celebrated instead. Orthodox Christians believe that their spiritual lives start with their stomachs. They believe that when peoples' eating is right their spirits can be more open to God and more attentive to all that is good, true, and beautiful in life. When, on the contrary, peoples' eating is wrong, their minds are disordered; their emotions are rebellious; and their flesh rules their being and behavior in harmful ways. Right eating means to eat the right foods in the right amounts at the right times in the right ways for the right reasons. People who eat properly prepare and partake of their meals with discipline and dignity, free from emotional drives and carnal desires. They do this to serve God, their fellow creatures, and their own well-being more effectively, fruitfully, and joyfully. The Church provides guidelines for healthy eating and sane fasting. The Lord Jesus Christ is the first and final Teacher on the subject, as He is on all others. Christ and His apostles feasted and fasted. They affirmed that God gives all foods to be enjoyed with thanksgiving (Act 10:10-15; Rom 14:6). They also warned that eating can become idolatrous. St. Paul, for example, speaks of "persons (who) do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own belly" (Rom 16:18). "Their end," he says, "is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things" (Phil 3:19). The Scriptures and the Saints teach that in eating and fasting, moderation is the rule for it leads to freedom from the carnal passions: lust, greed, anger, sadness, sloth, and despondency. While excesses of any kind are harmful and destructive, leading to either to gluttony and drunkenness, or to pride, vainglory, ungodly zeal, condemnation of others, and spiritual delusion. Parish Council Meeting Members in Attendance: Fr. David Koles, Chris Dresko, Chris Adams, Daniel Belonick, Julia Boisvert Bress, Nadine Cabrera, Sarah Clark, Rosemary Delaney, Al Hromi, and Ellen Santoro. Diana Lloyd and George Ludko were also in attendance. Meeting Called to Order at 7:04 p.m. and began with O Heavenly King. Chris Adams and Sarah Clark led the Council in the Daily Scripture Reading. Pastor s Report: Father provided a summary of the various events happening in the next month for Holy Trinity: December 12 will be a festal Vesperal Liturgy for St. Herman and Panikhida for Fr. Alexander Schmemann December 10 (Sunday) we will have the annual St. Nicholas celebration with the church school children Warden s Report: Chris Dresko noted that this is the last meeting before 2018 and there would be some changes to fine tune the annual meeting. The 2018 Parish Council will see the following changes: Dan Belonick as Warden, Chris Dresko as Vice Warden, Diana Lloyd will replace Al Hromi, and we are looking for someone to swap in for Rebecca Karabin-Ahern as auditor. Secretary s Report: The report needs to be ed out to be voted on. In the future, Sarah Clark will send the draft out to the entire council for review and vote. Chris Dresko reminded everyone to please reply all with their vote. Financial Report: Al Hromi presented the budget figures from September and October. The figures have been audited, and any discrepancies noted. Total September income - $ 10, Total September expenses - $ 10, Income over Expenses - $ Dan Belonick motioned to accept the September figures as presented, Chris Adams seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Total October income - $ 10, Total October expenses - $ 14, Expenses over Income - ($ 3,462.57) Chris Adams motioned to accept the October figures as presented, Dan Belonick seconded. Motion carried unanimously. 5

8 Financial Committee: Chris Adams shared that the committee met with our financial advisor, Kevin. A few changes were made to the church s investments. Year to date, the parish is up 10 percent net of fees, and the committee looked at reallocating funds and changing portfolio types for higher yields and a more conservative market. The former standings projected a $24 thousand yield over the next 12 months, but that should be even higher with the changes made. Diana Lloyd suggested looking into Real Estate Investment Funds and Chris Adams will talk with Kevin about it prior to the next committee meeting. The next meeting will be on December 21. Also, the committee reviewed the budget and the Council was provided with the current draft. The highlights are: Asking at the annual meeting if any parishioner wants to sponsor the All American Council trip Cost of living increases are included Property maintenance is getting a higher allocation There will be no more storage unit costs Council recommends that all parish newsletters be delivered via unless specifically requested or those homebound Dan Belonick suggested that the church can reassess the property maintenance costs and see what could be covered by the Bissland Fund. He also noted that the church needed to become more creative with fundraising. Currently for 2018, we have 44% of the expected pledges bringing us to $64,458. The move to Farmington Bank is complete. Building and Grounds: The church recently paid $1,700 to have the trees removed and will pay $500 for stump grinding Father David will follow up on lift repairs. Chris Dresko, Dan Belonick and Timothy Clark will look into adjusting the compression mechanism on the doors. Parish Life: The committee will announce a bowling night in January. Other upcoming events to include a movie night, and Rachel Santoro s suggestion of getting group tickets to sporting events at Central CT State University. All regular monthly activities are continuing. Cemetery Committee: George Ludko reported that he is collecting bids for combined landscaping and plowing services for the church and the cemetery. George also noted that the cemetery committee will be creating a brochure to market the newly broadened policy on who may purchase plots in the cemetery. Old Business: December 17 will be the pre-christmas cleaning after liturgy. The wax on the floors will be handled beforehand. Vestments for the young Altar Servers are ordered and predicted to be here before Lent. Elaine & Forrest Hanson, who contributed in memory of Ed & Olga Skotnicki, would like to be informed of the first service when the robes will be used. The American Flag will be placed following the meeting. Next Saturday, December 2, will be the next meeting of the intercessory prayer group. The group will take about 25 minutes after vespers to pray, reflect, have some quiet time. This meeting is open to all. New Business: St. Tikhon s Mission choir will be at Holy Trinity on Sunday, December 10. Father will confirm that parishioners are not needed to host the choir members. January 8 will be the next meeting and Chris Dresko asked that committee reports for the upcoming Annual Meeting be submitted in writing in advance. At the Annual Meeting, the budget report to the parish in person will highlight the specific changes and have a vote. Larger topics to be discussed at the Annual Meeting: Opening up the Bissland fund to cover property maintenance costs What do we want our parish to look like next year? What are our goals? Moving the choir downstairs/moving pews - this topic has been avoided while Chris Dresko has also served as warden while continuing to serve as choir director. If the topic comes up in January 2018, he will serve as an impartial chair of the meeting. Community garden - funding and planning Possible creation of fundraising committee Energy efficiency - the Parish Council can address in the new year. Chris Dresko asked that any other topics be communicated to him. January Charity - Dan Belonick motioned to support Warm the Children for the January Charity and Ancient Faith Radio for the February Charity. Ellen Santoro seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The Council brainstormed upcoming events for 2018 to fundraise and possibly involve the community (Orthodox and neighborhood) - Galas, auctions, pig roasts, etc. The poinsettias and wreaths will be delivered to the church on Sunday December 17 in time for the cleaning.
