Fasting for the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is nothing by mouth (food, drink, smoking, etc.) at least from the noontime meal until after Communion. Those who are physically able to are encouraged to fast the whole day. Please check the calendar for weekday confession times, also, Wednesdays, 5:00-5:30 p.m. and Saturdays, before and after Vespers. Father also is available by appointment at other times. Please make your Lenten confession before the end of Great Lent, Friday, April 6th. A note about Confession and frequent Communion: For those who are receiving the Eucharist every Sunday and on Feast days, an acceptable rule of thumb is to participate in the Sacrament of Confession at least once during each of the four Lenten seasons during the year. Also, in preparation for receiving the Holy Eucharist, especially at Sunday Divine Liturgy, prayer and fasting is the acceptable practice. Prayer, by attending Vespers the night before, and fasting, from midnight until after Divine Liturgy. When we have a weekday Festal Vesperal Liturgy the rules of fasting are the same as for Presanctified. We also should participate in the Sacrament of Confession if we are absent from Divine Liturgy & the Eucharist for three weeks in a row. CEMETERY CLEAN-UP: A reminder that with the warmer weather we should take the opportunity to remove the Christmas wreaths and winter flowers from the graves of our loves ones before we visit next month. 6 Holy Week LAZARUS SATURDAY With the proclamation of the Holy Gospel on the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent, Jesus announces to the disciples and to us in plain terms His approaching sufferings and at the same time His subsequent victory: Behold we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him to the Gentiles; and they will mock Him, spit upon Him and scourge Him and put Him to death; and on the third day He will rise again (Mark 10:33-35) Almost one week later, with the raising of Lazarus from the dead, the sufferings of Christ are initiated. In some the Resurrection of Lazarus produces faith, but in others it intensifies their enmity and hatred. With the celebration of Lazarus Saturday Great Lent comes to an end and HOLY WEEK BEGINS. It begins with the resurrection of Lazarus, the friend of Jesus. Lazarus symbolizes ALL MEN and his home is a symbol of the world and all mankind. Holy Week begins in triumph as Christ reveals clearly that His GIFT of LIFE EVER- LASTING is meant for EVERYBODY. PALM SUNDAY The news of the Resurrection of Lazarus spread very quickly and the people awaited His arrival in Jerusalem. The people acknowledge Him as King and Messiah and Christ accepts this open glorification. His triumph is commemorated twofold today: His entry into Jerusalem and His voluntary submission to the Cross. Today we carry blessed palms as a sign that we confess Christ to be our King, but a King not of this world but of the Kingdom of Eternity. THE DAYS OF THE BRIDEGROOM With the celebration of Matins on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings we enter into the Days of the Bridegroom. Christ has arrived in Jerusalem where His Passion and Triumph will take place. Christ comes to His people to save them and to love them as a bridegroom comes for his bride and takes her home. Christ is the BRIDEGROOM and we, the Church, are his BRIDE. He now comes to take us home to His Father in the Kingdom of Heaven. On HOLY MONDAY, the Church invites us to consider the Passion of Christ which is represented by the "figure" of Joseph in the Old Testament. Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, slandered for his chastity and thrown into prison! But eventually he was released from prison; attained a high rank; and received honors worthy of kings, becoming the governor of Egypt. Thus he symbolizes for us the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and His consequent great glory. Our attention is also brought to the barren fig tree that was cursed by our Lord, to remind us and to impress upon us that perdition awaits the soul that does not bear good fruit. On HOLY TUESDAY, out attention is directed to the parable of the ten virgins. It teaches us to be ready for our end, not knowing when our hour is coming. As the wise virgins were ready to meet the Bridegroom, we also must be prepared to meet the Heavenly Bridegroom in a sinless, upright and holy life. On HOLY WEDNESDAY, the Church recounts the Anointing of Jesus at Bethany. Judas takes issue over the waste of precious ointment. Jesus rebukes him: Why do you trouble this woman? She has done me a good turn. For in pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it for my burial. (Matt. 26:10-13) GREAT AND HOLY THURSDAY On Holy Thursday, the Church commemorates the LAST Supper - the great Gift of Christ our God to mankind. It was at the Last Supper that Christ gave us His Holy Body and Precious Blood and He promised us that He will be with us at all times and that His love for us would never change. As we listen to the Gospel account, Judas is put before our eyes and our minds are focused on his betrayal. We must ask ourselves: How often do we betray Our Lord, those of us who sat at His table and partook of His Sacred Body and Precious Blood? And then as we witness Our Lord washing the feet of His Apostles, His love for us becomes strikingly evident. At the Matins of Holy Friday the Gospels of Our Lord s Passion will be proclaimed. At the 5 th Gospel, when the passion concerning Christ s journey to Calvary is reached, the Church is darkened and the priest carries the Cross and places it at our Golgotha, in the center of the Church. Now there is silence and this silence that pervades Great and Holy Friday captures and stills our hearts and minds. GREAT AND HOLY FRIDAY This is a day unlike any other day. There is NO Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion is not received on this day. In the morning the Royal Hours are read before the Cross of Our Crucified Lord on Golgotha as we keep the silence and the fast of the day. In the afternoon the VESPERS of Holy Saturday commemorating the death and burial of Christ is served. During the Holy Gospel of the Vespers we hear of the Body of Christ being taken down from the cross and buried. During the Apostikha the Icon of the Crucified Lord is removed. With the singing of The Noble Joseph the Plastchanitza (Epitaphion), the icon of the buried Lord, is brought from the altar and is 4

7 carried to the grave for burial. As we knelt during the entrance of the gifts during the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts we kneel as the Plastchanitza is placed on the grave and the entire church becomes the Tomb of Christ. The Matins of Holy Saturday commemorates Christ s descent into hell. During the Matins our minds are directed to the entombed Christ and the prayers of the Church stress His redemptive work during the time that His Body lay in the tomb. The moment Christ died on the Cross, He rose from the dead, but His Resurrection was not made known to us until the third day. Before He made known His Resurrection to us, He descended into hell to proclaim His VICTORY over Satan and to release Adam and Eve and the Old Testament Saints from their captivity. Towards the end of the Service, the Plastchanitza will be carried in procession around the Church. It is this procession that symbolizes for us Christ s descent into hell. Our candles are lit as we walk with Christ and we are reminded that we have been freed and forgiven and through our Baptism we have been buried with Christ to rise with Him into the newness of life. GREAT AND HOLY SATURDAY Holy Saturday, The Blessed Sabbath, is the day in which sorrow is transformed onto joy. In the understanding of the church, sorrow is not replaced by joy but it is TRANSFORMED into joy. This distinction is important because it tells us that as Christ lies in death, it is an active death which brings about triumph. We can better understand it from the following explanation: Christ's repose in the tomb is an "active" repose. He comes in search of his fallen friend, Adam, who represents ALL MEN. Not finding him on earth, He descends to the realm of death, known as Hades in the Old Testament. There He finds him and brings him life once again. This is the victory: the dead are given life. The tomb is no longer a forsaken, life- less place. By His death Christ tramples death. On Saturday, the Vespers with the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great will be celebrated. The Vespers of Holy Saturday begins our Pascha celebration. After the Epistle is read, during the singing of Arise O God judge the Earth, the priest removes the dark vestments of Lent and puts on the bright vestments of Pascha, so that when the priest appears with the Gospel the light of the Resurrection is truly made known to us and our sorrow is transformed into joy. The Liturgy continues in this white and joyful light, revealing the tomb of Christ as the Life-giving tomb. This Liturgy is one of anticipation as we wait to here the proclamation at midnight that Christ is Risen. On Holy Saturday night at 11:30 PM the Nocturnes are served. At the approaching hour of midnight all things are made ready and we stand in anticipation and then the Royal Doors are opened and the priest carrying the Light of Pascha invites all present to take light from the True Light, Christ Who rises from the dead. The Procession now finds its way outside the Church that has served as the tomb of Christ over these past days. We carry our lit candles - reminding us of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Christ - and like the Myrrh-bearing women we come to the doors of the Church to Christ s tomb and find it empty. The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark 16:1-8 is proclaimed and we hear the angel ask the myrrh-bearing women: what is it that you seek? They are told that Christ is not here HE IS RISEN! The doors of the Church are opened, the bells are ringing, the Temple is filled with light, the Holy Table of the altar is seen by all since all the doors are opened and the Plastchanitza is resting upon it. The Holy Table always has two covers on it: the under cover is white and symbolizes the linen shroud that Christ was covered with in the tomb and the outer cover is always of fine and ornate material symbolizing the glory of the Risen Christ. The RESURRECTION MATINS is celebrated. The melodies are sung quickly with the joy and the excitement of the women and the apostles running to spread the Good News that Christ is Risen! The DIVINE LITURGY immediately follows the Resurrection Matins. The Sermon of St. John Chrysostom at the end of the Matins invites us to re-affirm our Baptism in the Death and Resurrection of Christ by coming into deep union with Him by receiving Holy Communion: "No one is to go away hungry for the altar table is fully laden with the divine food of the Body and Blood of Christ. From this point on, our celebration of PASCHA - THE FEAST OF FEASTS - continues for forty days and then for the entire year as we live in the Presence of our Lord in light, in life and in joy. THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up: this charge I have received from my Father. The Resurrection of Christ stands at the center of the Christian Faith. It is the supreme confirmation of His Messiah-ship. It verifies all that had gone before: His miraculous birth, the Divine revelations which accompanied Him, the truth of His moral teachings, His wondrous works, and His complete 5

8 identification with God. It lends unshakable confidence to all that lies ahead: the coming of the Holy Spirit according to His promise, the inaugura-tion of the Church and the final end of the ages. Only as the Son of God, having life in Himself, could He lay down His life volun-tarily, and then take it up again. At the time of His death and burial, the Disciples of Christ were a broken and thoroughly discouraged band. In their still limited view, all their hopes in Christ had been in vain. They locked themselves behind closed doors out of fear that their lives, too, were at stake. They went nowhere and preached nothing about anyone. There would be no Christianity today had not some tremendous event taken place to move them. Stories which attempt to falsify the Resurrection of Christ therefore lack credibility. It seems incredible that the disciples could have spread the Christian Faith in the way they did - based on a falsification. Only the Resurrection and subsequent descent of the Holy Spirit made the disciples apostles: people sent into the world with the knowledge, courage and power to carryon the work of Christ. In the doctrine of the Apostles, the Resurrection of Christ was everything. Their first sermons (Acts 2-4) speak almost exclusively of this event. The apostles considered bearing witness to the Resurrection as their primary function. At the time of the election of Matthias to replace the fallen Judas in the original twelve, Peter said:... one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection (Acts 1:22). As St. Paul so clearly states: If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain (1 Cor. 15:14) Did not out hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures? Then they told... how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. (Luke 24:32-35) The Resurrection of Christ was therefore not a biological rejuvenation of His physical body. The angel rolled away the stone from the sepulcher not to let Christ walk out, but to reveal that He was no longer there; He is not here: for he has risen, as he said. (Matthew 28:6) The Universal Resurrection In His Resurrection Christ is the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Cor. 15:20). He is the first fulfillment of the prophets of the Old Testament concerning the resurrection of all (Ezekiel 37), and the assurance of the future resurrection of all who live in Him. I believe in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. (Nicene Creed) The Feast of Feasts In the Church Pascha is in a class by itself. It is called the Feast of Feasts. About one third of the liturgical year is devoted to it, either in preparation or celebration. It was the first Christian feast and to this day remains the unchallenged center at the Church's liturgical life. Near midnight of Holy Saturday, all the faithful gather in the church. The priest, vested fully in white, the color of the baptismal robe, removes the Holy Shroud from the tomb and carries it to the Altar Table, where it remains until the feast of Ascension. The lights and candles of the church are extinguished. The faithful take candles as in Baptism and, lighting them from the one held by the priest, form a great procession out of the church. Choir, priest, people and servers, in the company of hoisted banners and peeling bells, circle the church. The baptismal procession, going to meet the risen Lord, once again becomes a reality. After His Resurrection, Christ appeared to His disciples in a new glorious form. He appeared suddenly, often through closed doors. He blessed and breathed upon them. He admonished them for not believing that He would rise. At the same time He ate and drank with them and allowed them to touch Him to see that He was not a ghost:... for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have. (Luke 24:39) After the Resurrection, the disciples often did not recognize Christ. Physical means of recognition, however important, were no longer enough. So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable it is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. (1Cor. 15:42-44) Christ was recognized by His disciples when He spoke their name (John 20:16), when He issued them commands and conversed with them (John 21:4-14); when He broke the bread and gave it to them (Luke 24:35). On these occasions the disciples said such things as this. The Feast of Baptism Pascha is the feast of our baptism. At Pascha we renew our own Baptism and committal to Christ: As many as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ. (Baptismal Hymn sung at the Paschal Liturgy) The procession pauses in front of the doors of the church and, after the priest, everyone sings the troparion of Pascha: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life. The Paschal greeting is exchanged even before entering the church: Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen! The doors of the church are opened and everyone re-enters. Immediate-ly after the celebration of the glorious Paschal Matins, the baptismal procession of Pascha reaches its conclusion. The Divine Liturgy is celebrated. As we commune, we meet and know the risen Lord in the same manner that the disciples met and knew Him after the Resurrection: in the breaking of the bread. 6
