20 who serve you day and night and, gazing upon the glory of your face, glorify you without ceasing. With them we, too, confess your name in exultation, giving voice to every creature under heaven, as we acclaim: The Preface continues with the Sanctus. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER I (THE ROMAN CANON) The Priest begins the Eucharistic Prayer: To you, therefore, most merciful Father, we make humble prayer and petition through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord: that you accept and bless these gifts, these offerings, these holy and unblemished sacrifices, which we offer you firstly for your holy catholic Church. Be pleased to grant her peace, to guard, unite and govern her throughout the whole world, together with your servant N. our Pope and N. our Bishop, and all those who, holding to the truth, hand on the catholic and apostolic faith. Remember, Lord, your servants N. and N. and all gathered here, whose faith and devotion are known to you. For them, we offer you this sacrifice of praise or they offer it for themselves and all who are dear to them: for the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well-being, and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true. In communion with those whose memory we venerate, especially the glorious ever-virgin Mary,

50 ADDITIONAL EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS EUCHARISTIC PRAYER FOR RECONCILIATION I The Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation may be used in Masses in which the mystery of reconciliation is conveyed to the faithful in a special way. Although these Eucharistic Prayers have been provided with a proper Preface, they may also be used with other Prefaces that refer to penance and conversion, as, for example, the Prefaces of Lent. The Priest beings the Eucharistic Prayer. Extending his hands, he says: V/ The Lord be with you. R/ And with your spirit. V/ Lift up your hearts. R/ We lift them up to the Lord. V/ Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. R/ It is right and just. It is truly right and just that we should always give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For you do not cease to spur us on to possess a more abundant life and, being rich in mercy, you constantly offer pardon and call on sinners to trust in your forgiveness alone. Never did you turn away from us, and, though time and again we have broken your covenant, you have bound the human family to yourself through Jesus your Son, our Redeemer, with a new bond of love so tight that it can never be undone. Even now you set before your people a time of grace and reconciliation, and, as they turn back to you in spirit, you grant them hope in Christ Jesus and a desire to be of service to all, while they entrust themselves more fully to the Holy Spirit. And so, filled with wonder, we extol the power of your love, and, proclaiming our joy at the salvation that comes from you, we join in the heavenly hymn of countless hosts,

as without end we acclaim: 51 Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. All kneel. You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and from the world s beginning are ceaselessly at work, so that the human race may become holy, just as you yourself are holy. Look, we pray, upon your people s offerings and pour out on them the power of your Spirit, that they may become the Body and Blood of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, in whom we, too, are your sons and daughters. Indeed, though we once were lost and could not approach you, you loved us with the greatest love: for your Son, who alone is just, handed himself over to death, and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the Cross. But before his arms were outstretched between heaven and earth, to become the lasting sign of your covenant, he desired to celebrate the Passover with his disciples. As he ate with them, he took bread and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to them, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU. In a similar way, when supper was ended, knowing that he was about to reconcile all things in himself through his Blood to be shed on the Cross, he took the chalice, filled with the fruit of the vine, and once more giving you thanks, handed the chalice to his disciples, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME. Then the Priest says: The mystery of faith.

74 Christian Initiation of Adults RITE OF ELECTION OR ENROLLMENT OF NAMES The rite of election or enrollment of names for catechumens who are to be admitted to the sacraments of Christian Initiation at the Easter Vigil should be celebrated by the Bishop (or his delegate) during the Mass of the First Sunday of Lent. INTRODUCTORY RITES ENTRANCE ANTIPHON cf. Psalm 105 (104):3-4 Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice; turn to the Lord and his strength; constantly seek his face. COLLECT O God, who though you are ever the cause of the salvation of the human race now gladden your people with grace in still greater measure, look mercifully, we pray, upon your chosen ones, that your compassionate and protecting help may defend both those yet to be born anew and those already reborn. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. R/ Amen. LITURGY OF THE WORD HOMILY Directing his words to the Scriptures of the Mass, the Bishop (or his delegate) encourages the faithful to give good example and to accompany the catechumens and candidates during the time of the Lenten preparation for celebrating the Easter sacraments. PRESENTATION OF THE CATECHUMENS Following the homily, a representative of the community presents the catechumens to the Bishop (or his delegate), saying: Your Excellency (Reverend Father), Easter is drawing near, and so these catechumens, whom I now present to you, are completing their period of preparation. They have found strength in God s grace and support in our community s prayers and example. The Bishop replies: Those who are to be chosen in Christ, come forward, together with your godparents.

75 One by one, the catechumens are called by name. Accompanied by a godparent, each catechumen comes forward and stands before the Bishop, who then says one of the following: A B My dear friends, these catechumens have asked to be initiated into the sacramental life of the Church this Easter. Those who know them have judged them to be sincere in their desire. During the period of their preparation they have listened to the word of Christ and endeavored to follow his commands; they have shared the company of their Christian brothers and sisters and joined with them in prayer. And so I announce to all of you here that our community has decided to call them to the sacraments. Therefore, I ask their godparents to state their opinion once again, so that all of you may hear. Addressing the godparents, he continues: As God is your witness, do you consider these catechumens worthy to be admitted to the sacraments of Christian initiation? Godparents: We do. When appropriate, the Bishop may then ask the assembly to express its approval: Now I ask you, the members of this community: Are you willing to affirm the testimony expressed about these catechumens and support them in faith, prayer and example as we prepare to celebrate the Easter sacraments? R/ We are. God s holy Church wishes to know whether these candidates are sufficiently prepared to be enrolled among the elect for the coming celebration of Eater. And, so I speak first of all to you, their godparents. The Bishop addresses the godparents: Have they faithfully listened to God s word proclaimed by the Church? Godparents: They have. Bishop: Have they responded to that word and begun to walk in God s presence? Godparents: They have. Bishop: Have they shared the company of their Christian brothers and sisters and joined with them in prayer? Godparents: They have. When appropriate, the Bishop may then ask the assembly to express its approval: And now I speak to you, my brothers and sisters in this assembly: Are you ready to support the testimony expressed about these catechumens and include them in your prayer and affection as we move toward Easter? R/ We are. INVITATION AND ENROLLMENT OF NAMES Addressing the catechumens, the Bishop advises them of their acceptance and asks them to declare their own intention: And now, my dear catechumens, I address you. Your own godparents and teachers (and this entire community) have spoken in your favor. The Church in the name of Christ accepts their judgment and calls you to the Easter sacraments.

106 Christian Initiation of Adults PREPARATION RITES (HOLY SATURDAY) When it is possible to bring the elect together on Holy Saturday, prior to the Easter Vigil, the following rites may be celebrated as a conclusion to a time of reflection and prayer and as a final preparation for the Easter sacraments. When all have gathered, a suitable hymn, antiphon, psalm or song may be sung. GREETING The celebrant greets the elect who are present, in the same manner as in the greeting for the Order of Mass. READING OF THE WORD OF GOD A B You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matthew 16:13-17 To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. John 6:35, HOMILY Directing his words to the proclaimed Word of God, the homilist will exhort the elect in imminent preparation for the Easter sacraments and their new life in Christ. THE EPHPHETHA RITE By the power of its symbolism, the ephphetha rite (opening of the ears and mouth) impresses upon the elect their need of grace in order that they may hear the Word of God and profess it for their salvation. READING OF THE WORD OF GOD AND INSTRUCTION Ephphetha, that is, be opened. Mark 7:31-37 Following the reading, the celebrant gives a brief explanation of the text. EPHPHETHA As a suitable hymn, antiphon, psalm or song is sung, the elect come before the celebrant, who touches the right ear, the left ear, and the closed lips of each of the elect with his thumb and says: Ephphetha: that is, be opened, that you may profess the faith you hear, to the praise and glory of God. RITE OF RECITATION OF THE CREED The Rite of Recitation of the Creed prepares the elect for the profession of faith that

they will make immediately before they are baptized. 107 PRAYER BEFORE THE RECITATION With hands outstretched, the celebrant says: Let us pray. Lord, we pray to you for these elect, who have now accepted for themselves the loving purpose and the mysteries that you revealed in the life of your Son. As they profess their belief with their lips, may they have faith in their hearts and accomplish your will in their lives. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/ Amen. RECITATION OF THE CREED A B Apostles Creed The celebrant begins: I believe in God, the Father almighty, As the elect listen, he continues with the assembly of the faithful: Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, At the words that follow, all bow: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, (end bow) suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Nicene Creed The celebrant begins: I believe in one God, As the elect listen, he continues with the assembly of the faithful: the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

238 Order of Christian Funerals Happy now are the dead who die in the Lord; they shall find rest from their labors. VIGIL FOR THE DECEASED INTRODUCTORY RITES The introductory rites gather the faithful together to form a community and to prepare all to listen to God s word. When the faithful have assembled and as the Priest and Deacon with assisting ministers enter the church, an appropriate psalm, hymn or song may be sung. GREETING A B C D Celebrant: May the God of hope give you the fullness of peace, and may the Lord of life be always with you. R/ And with your spirit. Celebrant: The grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. R/ And with your spirit. Celebrant: The grace and peace of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, be always with you. R/ And with your spirit. Celebrant: May the Father or mercies, the God of all consolation, be with you. R/ And with your spirit. An opening hymn may be sung at this time. INVITATION TO PRAYER Celebrant: My brothers and sisters, we believe that all the ties of friendship and affection, which knit us as one throughout our lives, do not unravel with death. Confident that God always remembers the good we have done and forgives our sins, let us pray, asking God to gather N. to himself: OPENING PRAYER After a brief period of silence,

A B Celebrant: Lord our God, the death of our brother (sister), N., recalls our human condition and the brevity of our lives on earth. But for those who believe in your love, death is not the end nor does it destroy the bonds that you forge in our lives. We share the faith of your Son s disciples and the hope of the children of God. Bring the light of Christ s resurrection to this time of testing and pain as we pray for N. and for those who love him (her), through Christ our Lord, R/ Amen. Celebrant: O God, glory of believers and life of the just, by the death and resurrection of your Son, we are redeemed: have mercy on your servant, N., and make him (her) worthy to share the joys of paradise, for he (she) believed in the resurrection of the dead. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/ Amen. LITURGY OF THE WORD 5 Periods of silence should intervene between the readings. First Reading A B We have an everlasting home in heaven. 2 Corinthians 5:1, 6-10 The Lord God will destroy death for ever. Isaiah 25:6a, 7-9 Responsorial Psalm The psalm is sung or said. 22 206 Rite of Marriage Outside Mass ENTRANCE RITE The ministers, followed by the Priest, process to the altar (or to the door of the church), where the Priest greets the bride and the bridegroom. According to local custom, the bride and bridegroom may be escorted by at least their parents and two witnesses. We share in their joy as the entrance antiphon, hymn, psalm or song is sung. The Entrance Rite continues as in the Order of Mass. LITURGY OF THE WORD READINGS There may be these readings, Old Testament, Responsorial Psalm, New Testament, Gospel acclamation (appropriate to the Liturgical season) and the Gospel. HOMILY After the gospel, the Priest or Deacon gives a homily drawn from the sacred texts, directed to the mystery of Christian marriage, the dignity of wedded love, the grace of the sacrament and the responsibilities of the married couple to mirror the selfemptying love of God. RITE OF MARRIAGE DECLARATION OF INTENTIONS All stand and the Priest or Deacon addresses all gathered in these or similar words: My brothers and sisters, you have come together in this church so that the Lord may seal and strengthen your love in the presence of the Church s minister and this community. Christ abundantly blesses this love. He has already consecrated you in baptism and now he enriches and strengthens you by a special sacrament so that you may assume the duties of marriage in mutual and lasting fidelity. And so, in the presence of the Church, I ask you to state your intentions. QUESTIONS Turning to the bride and bridegroom, the Priest or Deacon asks: N. and N., have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage? The bride and bridegroom each answers this question and the following separately. Will you love and honor each other as man and wife for the rest of your lives? The following question may be omitted if, for example, the couple is advanced in years: Will you accept children lovingly from God, and bring them up according to the law of Christ and his church?

CONSENT 207 A B C D The Priest or Deacon invites the couple to declare their consent: Since it is your intention to enter into marriage, join your right hands, and declare your consent before God and his Church. The bridegroom says: I, N., take you, N., to be my wife. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life. The bride says: I, N., take you, N., to be my husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life. Do you promise to be true to her in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love her and honor her all the days of your life? The bridegroom replies: I do. Then, he asks the bride: N., do you take N. to be your husband? 24 126 Rite of Baptism for One Child Outside Mass RECEPTION OF THE CHILD Ideally, baptism should take place on Sunday, the day on which the Church celebrates the fullness of the paschal mystery. At the entrance of the church, the father and mother, accompanied by the godparents, present the child to the Church for baptism. As the celebrant joins those gathered, a suitable psalm or hymn may be sung, after which the celebrant greets all present. Celebrant asks: What name do you give your child? Parents reply: N. Celebrant (to parents of each child or collectively): What do you ask of God s Church for N.? Parents: Baptism. Celebrant: You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so, you are accepting the responsibility of training him (her) in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring him (her) up to keep God s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking? Parents: We do. Addressing godparents, Celebrant asks: Are you ready to help the parents of this child in their duty as Christian mothers and fathers? Godparents: We are. Celebrant continues: N., the Christian community welcomes you with great joy. In its name, I claim you for Christ our Savior by the sign of the cross. I now trace the cross on your forehead, and invite your parents (and godparents) to do the same. In silence, they do so. The celebrant then invites all to participate in the Liturgy of the Word. If there is a procession to a different locale within the church, an appropriate psalm, hymn or song may be sung. (e.g., Psalm 85) LITURGY OF THE WORD Readings Old Testament Reading Responsorial Psalm New Testament Reading Gospel Acclamation Gospel

Homily The celebrant leads all present into a clearer and deeper understanding of the Scriptures, as they relate to the gift and responsibility of baptism. Following the homily, an appropriate psalm, hymn or song may be sung. 127 PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL (UNIVERSAL PRAYER) Celebrant: My brothers and sisters, let us ask our Lord Jesus Christ to look lovingly on this child who is to be baptized, on his (her) parents and godparents, and on all the baptized. Assisting Minister: By the mystery of your death and resurrection, bathe this child in light, give him (her) the new life of baptism and welcome him (her) into your holy Church. R/ Lord, hear our prayer. & # œ œ œ œ Lord, hear our prayer. R/ Assisting Minister: Keep his (her) family always in your love. R/ Assisting Minister: Renew the grace of our baptism in each one of us. THE EASTER PROCLAMATION (EXSULTET) With all standing and holding lighted candles in their hands, the Deacon, or in his absence, the Priest, after incensing the book and the candle, proclaims the Easter Proclamation (Exsultet). 45 937 Prayers If we pray, we will believe; if we believe, we will love; if we love, we will serve. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta PRAYERS IN PREPARATION FOR MASS PRAYER OF SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS Almighty and ever-living God, I approach the sacrament of Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I come sick to the Doctor of Life, unclean to the Fountain of Mercy, blind to the Radiance of Eternal Light, and poor and needy to the Lord of Heaven and Earth. Lord, in Your great generosity, heal my sickness, wash away my defilement, enlighten my blindness, enrich my poverty, and clothe my nakedness. May I receive the Bread of Angels, the King of kings and Lord of lords, with humble reverence, with the purity and faith, the repentance and love, and the determined purpose that will help to bring me to salvation. May I receive the sacrament of the Lord s body and blood, and its reality and power. Kind God, may I receive the Body of Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, born from the womb of the Virgin Mary, and so be received into His mystical body and numbered among His members. Loving Father, as on my earthly pilgrimage I now receive Your beloved Son under the veil of a sacrament, may I one day see Him face to face in glory, who lives and reigns with you for ever. Amen. PRAYER BEFORE MASS O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it, the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to Thee, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship Thee in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF SAINT AMBROSE I draw near, loving Lord Jesus Christ, to the table of Your most delightful banquet in fear and trembling, a sinner, presuming not upon my own merits, but trusting rather in your goodness and mercy. I have a heart and body defiled by my many offenses, a mind and tongue over which I have kept no good watch. Therefore, O loving God, O awesome Majesty, I turn in my misery, caught in snares, to You the Fountain of

938 Mercy, hastening to You for healing, flying to You for protection; and while I do not look forward to having You as judge, I long to have You as Savior. To You, O Lord, I display my wounds; to You I uncover my shame. I am aware of my many and great sins, for which I fear, but I hope in Your mercies, which are without number. Look upon me, then, with eyes of mercy, Lord Jesus Christ, eternal King, God and Man, crucified for mankind. Listen to me, as I place my hope in You, have pity on me, full of miseries and sins, You, who will never cease to let the fountain of compassion flow. Hail, O Saving Victim, offered for me and for the whole human race on the wood of the Cross. Hail, O noble and precious Blood, flowing from the wounds of Jesus Christ, my crucified Lord, and washing away the sins of all the world. Remember, Lord, your creature, whom You redeemed by Your Blood. I am repentant of my sins; I desire to put right what I have done. Take from me, therefore, most merciful Father, all my iniquities and sins, so that, purified in mind and body, I may worthily taste the Holy of Holies. And grant that this sacred foretaste of Your Body and Blood which I, though unworthy, intend to receive, may be the remission of my sins, the perfect cleansing of my faults, the banishment of shameful thoughts, and the rebirth of right sentiments; and may it encourage a wholesome and effective performance of deeds pleasing to You and be a most firm defense of body and soul against the snares of my enemies. Amen. PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY O most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of tenderness and mercy, I, a miserable and unworthy sinner, fly to you with all the affection of my heart, and I beseech your motherly love, that, as you stood by your most dear Son, while He hung on the Cross; so, in your kindness, you may be pleased to stand by me, a poor sinner, and all Priests who today are offering the Sacrifice here and throughout the entire holy Church, so that with your gracious help we may offer a worthy and acceptable oblation in the sight of the most high and undivided Trinity. Amen. FORMULA OF INTENT My intention is to celebrate Mass and to consecrate the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the Rite of Holy Roman Church, to the praise of almighty God and all the Church triumphant, for my good and that of all the Church militant, for all who have commended themselves to my prayers in general and in particular, and for the welfare of the Holy Roman Church. Amen. May the almighty and merciful Lord grant us joy with peace, amendment of life, room for true repentance, the grace and consolation of the Holy Spirit and perseverance in good works. Amen.
