Why Corner Can we move God's heart? Can we intercede for someone for God's grace? How about for forgiveness? How about for special intentions? Let me begin with this true story about Elizabeth Lesseur and Fr. Felix. She was born in Paris in 1866, and in 1889 she married a medical doctor named Felix Leseur. Felix had been raised a Catholic, but in medical school he lost his faith, and eventually declared himself to be an atheist. And he was not just an ordinary atheist. He was a very loud, militant atheist (like Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins today) so much so, that for a time, he was the editor of an anti-clerical, atheistic newspaper in Paris in which he constantly attacked the Church and people of faith. Interestingly enough, as time passed and Felix became more and more anti-god in his outlook, his wife Elisabeth became more and more devout. As you might imagine, Felix wasn t too happy about this, and tried a number of times to enlighten his wife and undermine her ever-growing faith, but thankfully he never succeeded. In 1904 Elisabeth became seriously ill. She suffered terribly for 10 years and eventually died of cancer. A couple of years before her death she made a very bold prediction to her husband: she told him that he would someday have a conversion of heart and return to the practice of his faith. She said it with incredible confidence. Then she went one step further. She said, Felix, I know you. I am absolutely certain that when you return to God, you will not stop on the way because you never do things by halves.... You will some day be Father Leseur." He probably thought she was hallucinating! He responded, Elisabeth, you know [how I feel]. I ve sworn hatred of God. I shall live in that hatred and die in it. Elisabeth passed away in Not long after her death, Felix was reading through her personal journal and there he found a note that was written by his wife to him. She knew that someday he would find it. The note read: In 1904 I asked Almighty God to send me sufficient sufferings to purchase your soul. On the day that I die you will have been bought and paid for. Greater love than this no woman has. By the following year, Dr. Felix Leseur was a practicing Catholic again. And several years later, in 1923, at the age of 62, he was ordained a priest for the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans. He was married to Elisabeth for 25 years, and believe it or not, he served the Lord as a priest for 27 years, dying in First, Mark wrote, "when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, 'Child your sins are forgiven.'" It was the faith of the paralytic's friends that saved him. Knowing that there was no room in the house, the four friends climbed up the roof of the house and used their hands to removed the hard bricks and stuccoes to let (continued on next page)
3 Why Corner Continued their friend down in front of Jesus. Their hands must have been aching, sore and bleeding under the hot sun, but they did not care because they loved their friend enough to do this for him. What an act of extraordinary love and devotion of true friendship by taking care of each other and bringing him to Jesus, who was the only hope left for him. Jesus knew this and He was moved and touched by the paralytic's friends heroic act and cured him without any reservation. In Batman Begins, whenever Bruce asked his butler Alfred if he ever gave up on him, Alfred always responded, "never, Sir!" even when Batman was down or experienced his worst days or challenges. We need good friends who will never give up on us; who will be faithful to us; who will do good and moral things for us, even when we don't want them too. This paralytic man was fortunate to have good friends. So too in our lives, we need good friends who are willing to do everything to bring us to Christ. Do you have good, moral and faithful friends in your circle? Do your friends know Jesus? Second, Mark wrote, "Jesus said to the paralytic, 'I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.'" The paralytic's friends can only do so much. It is now up to him and how he wanted to respond to Jesus. He had been silent throughout the whole account. Jesus issued three hard challenges for him. After years or maybe his entire life being paralyzed, Jesus said "rise" and he did. His friends faith became his own faith. He believed in the power of Jesus and Jesus' command. Next, Jesus said "pick up your mat and go home" and he did because he believed and did everything Jesus told him to do. Not only was his life restored but all his sins are forgiven. All this took place because he had good friends. Do you have good friends who love Jesus? We can intercede for one another. Don't ever give up. St. Monica cried, prayed, suffered, and did works of penance for St. Augustine for 30 years, and like Elizabeth, for her husband Felix for 25 years. Never give up on each other and what we can become because God will never give up on us. Keep on smiling! Fr Young Nguyen Update on Fr. Michael I spoke to Fr. Michael on Wednesday. He s in good spirits. He is going to have surgery on his liver on Tuesday, February 21st at 7:30 a.m. at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. The doctors gave him a good prognosis. He appreciates all the prayers being said for him. I assured him we would continue to pray for his recovery. 5 Lenten Fish Fry The Knights of Columbus will be holding a Fish Fry on the Friday s of Lent, beginning on February 24th through March 30th. They will be serving from 5:30 7:30 p.m. The cost is $21/family, $7/Adult, $6/Senior and $4/child. This year there will be bigger portions and the price includes your drink and dessert. Buy your tickets early as the price will be higher if you purchase tickets at the door. Advance tickets go on sale this weekend after all masses. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, in the streets of Rio and New Orleans and in the canals of Venice, Carnival reaches its height. We stand on the brink of Lenten discipline and order, of sacrifice and prayer, and like a diver for pearls, we take a deep breath of life s abundance before immersing ourselves. Literally Good-bye to the Flesh, these once were days for clearing out the barnyard and having one last good roast before turning to fish, to eggs and cheese and porridges. In some places, masks and disguises are worn as a reminder that all falsehood must be stripped away in Lent and our true identity as the baptized must prosper. In others, the green, purple, and gold beads tossed in playful salute have their origins not only in the gifts of the magi, but also entwine the liturgical colors of Ordinary Time, Lent, and Easter. The message, sadly missed by many, is: embrace the Lenten journey, and find your life transformed. Dedicate the next few days to savoring life s wonders, to the abundance of tables laden with great food and surrounded by the laughter of dear friends. Then, as you step forward to receive ashes on your brow, you will have already acquired a yearning for the renewing splash of Easter s waters. A man can no more diminish God s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word darkness on the walls of his cell. Lenten Mission C.S. Lewis Our Lenten Mission will begin on February 27th at 7:00 p.m. and end on February 29th with a Penance Service at 7:30 p.m. Our presenter will be Mark T. Reeves and the topic will be Experiencing God s Love in Everyday Life. Hope to see everyone there. Ginny and Rem will be honored at the Recognition Day Mass on Saturday, March 3rd at 9:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta. All are welcome to attend the Recognition Day Mass and the reception to follow. CONGRATULATIONS Michael Martino In winning three Junior Varsity State titles in swimming and setting two new records in the 50 yard freestyle and butterfly.
