Page5 The Collect of the Day Let us pray: O God, you have assured the human family of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Deliver us from the death of sin and raise us

Page 6 to new life in him, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen The Proclamation of the Word A Reading from the First Book of Samuel Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, "You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations." But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." Samuel prayed to the Lord, and the Lord said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. Just as they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so also they are doing to you. Now then, listen to their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them." So Samuel reported all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, "These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots. He will take your male and female slaves, and the best of your cattle and donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take one-tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the Lord will not answer you in that day." But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, "No! but we are determined to have a king over us, so that we also may be like other nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles." 1 Samuel 8:4-11, Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. Psalm Refrain The Lord will make good his purpose for me. I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I will sing your praise. I will bow down toward your holy temple and praise your name, because of your love and faithfulness; R For you

Page7 have glorified your name and your word above all things. When I called, you answered me; you increased my strength within me. R All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord, when they have heard the words of your mouth. They will sing of the ways of the Lord, that great is the glory of the Lord. R Though the Lord be high, he cares for the lowly; he perceives the haughty from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe; you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies; your right hand shall save me. The Lord will make good his purpose for me; O Lord, your love endures for ever; do not abandon the works of your hands. The Lord will make good his purpose for me. Psalm 138 A Reading from the Second Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians Just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture - "I believed, and so I spoke" - we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn: #575 Let Streams of Living Justice vv. 1, 2 The Lord be with you And also with you The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ The crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain Jesus, for people were saying, "He has gone out of his mind." And the scribes who

Page 8 came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons." And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin" - for they had said, "He has an unclean spirit." Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you." And he replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother." Mark 3:20-35 The Gospel of Christ Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ Gradual Hymn: #575 Let Streams of Living Justice vv. 3 Sermon The Nicene Creed Let us confess our faith, as we say, We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

Page9 begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Draw your Church together, O Lord, into one great company of disciples, together following our Lord Jesus Christ into every walk of life, together serving him in his mission to the world, and together witnessing to his love on every continent and island. We ask this in his name and for his sake. Amen

Page 10 Confession and Absolution Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites us to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. The Preparation of the Gifts Offertory: #593 O God of Every Nation Prayer over the Gifts Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is glory through Jesus Christ, now and for ever. Amen

Page11 The Great Thanksgiving Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a holy people in Jesus Christ our Lord; you renew that mystery in bread and wine and nourish us, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the holy people who have served you in every age, we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name: Sanctus: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in

Page 12 the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith, and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

Page13 The Lord s Prayer Being made one by the power of the Spirit, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Agnus Dei My brothers and sisters in Christ, these are the gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

Page 14 Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you and his blood which he shed for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Communion ALL may come forward for Communion or a blessing. (If you do not wish to receive from the common cup, you are invited to remain at the rail and acknowledge or touch the cup.) Please cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you wish to receive a blessing only. Communion Hymns: Prayer after Communion #538 Nearer, My God to Thee #540 Just as the Deer Let us pray We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing power of this gift of life. In your mercy, strengthen us through this gift, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen Sunday School Sharing Sending Hymn: #461 Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus Blessing The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and his son Jesus Christ our Lord. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Page15 The Dismissal Let us go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God. Postlude Music In Memoriam The bulletins this June are offered in Memory of Lady Marjorie Murray.

The physical church is a small stone chapel with a large 4-season extension worship space. From their website: The Anglican Church of St Thomas is a unique place of worship. It has a beautiful stone chapel for small services. Next to it is the Tabernacle, which holds larger services. It is built around an old threshing floor (aloni) and has a stone floor and a small wall surrounds it. You will see from the photographs that in the winter the plastic sides are unwound making it cosy. Through the clear plastic we can still see the beautiful White Mountains beyond. In the summer the sides are rolled up and so we hear the cicadas, the birds and the sheep and goats joining us in worship!

Page 18 The Church of St. Thomas was born out of prayer. In 2003 a small group of people began meeting regularly in the home of Tony and Suzanne Lane to pray and worship God. Numbers increased as the local ex-pat community grew Early in 2007, Tony Lane, realising the need for a more suitable worship space, and inspired by the typical Cretan mountain chapels, designed and built the Chapel of St Thomas. In July that year, the ministry of the Church of St Thomas officially commenced with the naming and blessing of this newly built Church by Canon Mike Peters. The Church was officially dedicated by Bishop Geoffrey in At the same service Tony Lane was Licensed as a Reader within the Anglican Church.

Page19 Later that year the covered Tabernacle was erected by Tony, creating an area for over 100 worshippers to be seated in all weathers. In October 2009 he was ordained Deacon, and in July 2010 ordained as Priest. He is now serving as an Assistant (Retired) Priest as part of St Thomas's Ministry Team. John and I visited St. Thomas and worshipped with them in October The Revd Canon Philip Lambert and the whole congregation warmly welcomed us our friends who drove us there did not stay for the service, but were invited to join in fellowship and conversation with everyone, when they returned to collect us. The congregation numbered about 40 locals, though they told us that that drops to about 6 in the winter! Many British people live on Crete for all or part of the year. St. Thomas grew out of a local desire to have Anglican worship. They use the modern liturgy from Common Worship, the English version of our Book of Alternative Services. The Greek people worship at the Greek Orthodox Church. Much like the Roman Catholic faith, the Greek Orthodox faith is integrated into the fabric of their lives. While staying in the village of Azogires, John and I were able to participate in a huge celebration of the Feast of the 99 Fathers at an old monastery in the valley. I ll save that experience for another Share Your Journey. Submitted by Rev d Helen *************************************************************************************** Share your stories Please contribute to our features: Share Your Stories Many of us will be away visiting other places through the summer. We are encouragin people to reflect on their experiences and submit a write-up for the bulletin. It is wonderful to hear of other churches and/or life in other places. It helps us to both appreciate what we have at home and see other possibilities.
