4 Ho to Use This Book Welcome to Spirit Psalm, OCP s annual, contemporary psalm and Gospel acclamation resource! Spirit Psalm combines: Contemporary musical settings by many of riters found in OCP s popular contemporary hymnal, Spirit Song Verbatim texts from Lectionary for Mass The same convenient, liturgical organization and ease of use pioneered by OCP s popular Respond Acclaim series Pair it ith Spirit Song, or any or parish music missal or hymnal, to infuse a more contemporary musical sound into Liturgy of Word Responses, Acclamations, Verses Most of refrains in this volume labeled Response or Acclamation, depending on liturgical moment are ritten for cantor/assembly and topart harmony These topart harmonies can usually be performed ith upper voice sung an octave loer (typically by tenors/baritones), and bottom voice sung at pitch (typically by altos) Feel free to experiment ith or voicing options as appropriate for your musicians The responsorial psalm verses and Gospel verse are designed to be proclaimed by a cantor Music Notation Although Spirit Psalm uses mostly conventional music notation, you ill observe that psalm verses are set in a somehat unusual format This notational style is designed for flexibility; verses may be sung in eir a metered style more typical of contemporary psalmody, or y may be freely chanted in much same manner as Respond Acclaim More on that belo, but first, re are also a fe nonstandard markings that you ill encounter Omission Marks As is often case in Lectionary, a single psalm may have one or to verses that contain significantly feer ords than or verses In se situations, cantor part is marked ith ( ), a convention that ill be familiar to Respond Acclaim users Spirit Psalm couples those markings ith large square brackets [ ] around entire musical passage that is to be omitted These omitted segments can be as short as one measure or as long as eight measures, so be sure to scan ahead to see here omitted passage ends In xample 1 on next page taken from Book of Daniel (Daniel 3, p 221) cantor ill skip bracketed measures for second through fifth verses, singing directly from end of first system to beginning of third system Lyric Repeat Marks When a single psalm has one verse ith many more ords than or verses, a segment of music must be repeated Unlike traditional repeat signs, hich indicate that a musical segment is alays repeated on every verse, se lyric repeat marks are meant to sho that music is only repeated for a specific verse Thus, in xample 1 (shon on next page), only first part of fourth verse ill be repeated (indicated by labels a and b ) Additional examples of se nonstandard repeats can be found on pp (Psalm 10) here a segment of third verse is actually repeated tice and p 111 (Psalm 91) and p 303 (Psalm 113) 3

5 Ho To USe THiS Book, cont (2) xample 1 Daniel 3:52, 53, 5, 56 (p 221) VRSS ( \\\\\\\\\\\\\:) 1 Blessed are 2 Blessed are 3 Blessed are a Blessed are b from your 5 Blessed are ( \\\\\\\\\ \\\\:) (Verse 1 only) (Bm7) C m (opt harmony) you, you you you throne you O Lord, in on ho up in (m/d) F (A/C m/ B/D ) God of our temple of your throne of your look into on firmament of fars, holy Kingdom, depths cherubim, heaven, 1 praise orthy and ex alted above all for ever; and blessed is your holy and glorious 25 ( ) (Bm7) C m 1 name, 2 glory, 3 5 praise praise praise praise praise orthy and ex orthy and orthy and ex orthy and ex orthy and (G) A (G) A B alted above all for all glorious above alted above alted above all for all for all for glori ous for B (a tempo) ages ever ever ever ever (a tempo) (m/d) F m/ (m/a) F m/b (A/C B/D ) (:\\\\ \\\\\\\\\ ) (:\\\\ \\\\\\\\\ ) (NC) DC DC

6 Metered Verse Option 5 Ho To USe THiS Book, cont (3) The first ay to perform psalm verses is to sing m metrically The pianist and or instrumentalists continue to play in same meter and pacing as response, playing all notes both fullsize and cuesize The cantor forms ords into a rhythm that fits ith meter being played by instruments In this style, re is not one correct vocal rhythm, but rar many possibilities The goal for cantor is to chant ords in a natural rhythm, and to arrive at next measure along ith instruments It may help to think of next measure as a target or goal rhythm of ords ithin a measure is less significant than is arriving at next measure at same time as instrumentalists Those familiar ith Gelineau psalmody may find this style quite intuitive xample 2 shos one possible realization of first verse of Daniel 3 (compare to xample 1) xample 2 Metered verse interpretation, from Daniel 3 (p 221); this is only one of many rhythmic possibilities VRSS 1 Bless ed are you, O Lord, God of our fa rs, Chanted Verse Option (m/d) (A/C ) F m/ B/D 3 When proclaiming psalm verses in a chanted style, cantor freely intones ords of psalm verse ithout being confined to a meter In this situation, keyboardist plays only fullsize notes (omitting all cuesize notes), holding m beneath cantor in a typical accompaniedchant style Note that fullsize notes usually align ith chord changes ritten for guitarists xample 3 shos ho a chanted performance ould be realized for first system of Daniel 3 (compare to xample 1) xample 3 Chanted verse interpretation, from Daniel 3 (p 221); cue notes omitted from accompaniment VRSS 1 Blessed are you, O Lord, (m/d) (A/C ) F m/ B/D God of our fars, Occasionally, re are passing chords that are intended to be used only hen verses are sung metrically; se are enclosed in square brackets, and may be omitted for chanted verse option (see pp 9, 68, 73, 83, 87 88, 93, 207, 223 2, 257, 271, 285, , and 31) Toard end of chanted verses is directive (a tempo), here instruments resume metered rhythm and pacing, as a ay of leading easily back into metered response (see last to measures of xample 1)

7 Ho To USe THiS Book, cont () Melodic Interpretation The hybrid chant/metrical psalm verses in this resource are kept intentionally simple melodically As cantors become more comfortable ith style, some improvisation around melody is appropriate, particularly as verses progress The recording library offers some examples of this introductions Throughout this book, re are some cases of rittenout introductions to Responsorial Psalms and Gospel Acclamations The maority of settings, hoever, do not have introductions In se cases, you may play entire response (or acclamation) as an instrumental introduction Liturgy Preparation Assistance Recordings To aid parish musicians in learning se ne psalm and gospel settings, a 5disc box set recording is available (edition ) Complete versions of every psalm and Gospel acclamation in entire book have been recorded (all verses!), offering a performance example for cantors to emulate or use as a umpingoff place for ir on interpretation Indexes Scriptural, alphabetical, and ritual indexes are provided beginning on p 352 for easy reference Table of Contents First Sunday of Advent Dec 2 8 Immaculate Conception of Blessed Virgin Mary Dec 8 11 Second Sunday of Advent Dec 9 16 Our Lady of Guadalupe Dec Third Sunday of Advent Dec Fourth Sunday of Advent Dec Nativity of Lord (Christmas): At Vigil Mass Dec 2 3 At Mass during Night Dec 25 0 At Mass at Dan Dec 25 5 At Mass during Day Dec 25 8 The Holy Family of esus, Mary and oseph Dec 30 5 Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mor of God an 1 58 The piphany of Lord an 6 62 The Baptism of Lord an Second Sunday in Ordinary Time an Third Sunday in Ordinary Time an Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Feb 3 82 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Feb Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Feb Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Feb 2 96 ighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mar Ash Wednesday Mar First Sunday of Lent Mar
