MIDWEST MIDWEEK Brothers of Holy Cross Midwest Province - P.O. Box 460 Notre Dame, Indiana November 4, 2015 Andre House of Hospitality, Arizona Brother Richard Armstrong On Thursday, October 29, the United States Province Provincial, Fr. Tom O Hara attended a board meeting of Andre House in Phoenix. On Friday he joined Bishop Olmstead, Fr. Tom Doyle, Holy Cross religious and friends of Andre House for Mass and dinner celebrating the 30 th Anniversary of Andre House and the 50 th anniversary of Br. Richard Armstrong s religious profession. On Saturday Fr. Bill Wack and Fr. Tom O Hara led participants in a reflection on service to the poor.

Columba Hall Open House Brother Thomas Moser, CSC, superior of the community members at Columba Hall, hosted an Open House on Wednesday, October 28, A brief program opened with a blessing and prayer by Fr. William Blum, CSC. Brother Chester Freel, CSC, welcomed the visitors and shared with them a bit of the history of Columba Hall, reminding the group that it is their generosity which has enabled us to renovate Columba Hall these past few years. Brother Chester concluded his remarks on Columba Hall by thanking the group for their recent support of the province s efforts in the aspirancy and postulancy programs at St. Joseph Hall on the Holy Cross College campus. A special welcome message and an update on recent renovations were given by Brother Thomas Moser. He encouraged the visitors to tour the house and let them know a special treat would be theirs as Brother George Klawitter, CSC, played the organ in chapel for those who toured the third floor. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of awards, plaques to donors who recently joined the Anchors of Hope Society composed of those who have included the Brothers of Holy Cross in their estate plans. Those present at the open house who were recognized were: Mr. Hugh O Donnell, Don and Peg Claeys, and Mrs. Mary J. Maurer, sister of Brother Robert Kelly, CSC. 4 SEHS Holy Family Chapel Stained Glass Windows On Sunday, October 18, 2015, St. Edward High School President Jim Kubacki hosted a Mass of Thanksgiving and brunch for leadership-level donors to the Holy Family Chapel at the School. The occasion marked the official unveiling of the new stained glass windows and donor wall at the Chapel, which was constructed during the tenure of Brother Peter Graham. Celebrated by Fr. Thomas Schubeck, SJ, a St. Edward alumnus from the class of 1954, the Mass commemorated the completion of the final stage of the Chapel project. The windows are original designs developed by a committee at the school and executed by artists at Henninger s Religious Goods. Each window commemorates the Holy Cross foundation of the school. Two windows on side walls near the altar depict Our Lady of Sorrows, Patroness of the Congregation, and St. Joseph, Patron of the Brothers, with a teenage Jesus. The other four windows were designed to honor significant men in the history of the Congregation of Holy Cross and the founding of the school. Those windows depict Fr. Jacques Dujarie, founder of the Brothers of St. Joseph who later became the Brothers of Holy Cross; Blessed Basile Moreau, founder of the Congregation; Saint Brother Andre Bessette, the first Holy Cross religious to be canonized; and Brother John William Donoghue, founding principal of the high school. 6 Holy Family Chapel at Lakewood St. Edward Features New Stained Glass A Perspective by Br. Kenneth Kane, C.S.C. This is a labor of love, I thought, as I stepped inside St. Ed s Holy Family Chapel last week for the first time since the new windows were installed. Softly-filtered hues of green, gold, blue and white from the southern sky stream in through seven new panes. Carefully selected texts by Holy Cross founders and leaders are etched into the glass near each familiar iconic image. The new windows render this sacred space even more attractive and calming than it already was when the chapel first replaced the CSC Brothers residence in 2008 under Brother Peter Graham s direction This window upgrade has been three years in the making, exclaimed Paul Mocho, head of Institutional Advancement at St. Edward High School. We owe thanks to the Brothers, our recent graduating classes, and our sponsoring donors. Both the history of the Holy Cross Congregation and the spirit of St. Edward High School have been beautifully affirmed. Brother James Everett and Brother David Martin were especially helpful, Paul said, in ensuring that the new windows properly render the school s Holy Cross history. Immediately below the window that displays founding Principal, Br. John William Donoghue, the designers chose the emergency exit door located there as an opportune place to affix Father Moreau s quotation, Holy Cross will grow like a mighty tree These words fittingly invite comparison with the image just above

which shows the school s first principal as a tree planter. A close inspection reveals the south façade of the high school in the background outside. Viewed from inside the chapel behind the corpus and from the outside along Detroit Avenue, the windows in the sanctuary carried a raindrop theme when the Chapel was first constructed. This theme is now replaced with new glass panels that shield worshipers from being distracted by passing traffic formerly visible from the chapel s interior. Broad, colorful glass striping in the new windows along the east and west walls inside sweep the eye through the chapel and climax behind the McKenna corpus, carved from tree trunks removed during construction on the property. The former raindrop sanctuary windows were moved to the chapel lobby, commented Mocho. In the lobby, a tasteful panel of thank you commendations is portrayed to honor the Fairfield family (chapel major donors) and other donors who helped to fund the more recent window renovations

In Solidarity with Our Syrian Brothers and Sisters In solidarity with our Syrian brothers and sisters, the leaders of the four congregations of Holy Cross sisters, brothers and priests have issued a joint statement on the Syrian refugee crisis, calling for a more rigorous response for the protection and resettlement of international refugees, and a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict. Mary Turgi s text as sent to us by Dana Taylor on October 19, (dtaylor@cscsisters.org ) Dear Friends: In solidarity with our Syrian brothers and sisters, the leaders of the four Congregations of Holy Cross sisters, brothers and priests have issued a joint statement on the Syrian refugee crisis, calling for a more rigorous response for the protection and resettlement of international refugees, and a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict. This declaration, together with a list of the signatories, is available in English, Spanish, and French. The signing of the statement took place at a meeting of the four general councils of Holy Cross, hosted by the Congregation of Holy Cross in Rome, Italy, from October 5-6. To promulgate the declaration, the Holy Cross International Justice Office (HCIJO) will distribute the statement to the United Nations Secretary General, the heads of state in countries where Holy Cross ministers, the International Union of Superiors General (UISG), and the Union of Superiors General (USG). The declaration will also be posted on the HCIJO website and its Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ pages. Each individual congregation will also circulate the statement within its own networks. The statement concludes We stand together in solidarity with persons of good will who are moved by compassion and seek fullness of life for all of God's people a powerful reflection of Pope Francis message, Our openness to others remains the source of our nobility as human persons (Laudato si, para. 119). In solidarity and peace, Mary Turgi CSC Director Holy Cross International Justice Office 403 Bertrand Annex - Saint Mary's Notre Dame, IN (phone) (fax) mturgi@cscsisters.org

Family of Holy Cross Statement on the Syrian Refugee Crisis Énoncé de la Famille Sainte-Croix sur la crise des refugiés syriens Declaración de la Familia de Santa Cruz sobre la crisis de los refugiados sirios We, the leadership of the four Holy Cross congregations, meeting in Rome, Italy, are acutely aware of the plight of our Syrian sisters and brothers. We are shocked and saddened by the violence being perpetrated against innocent men, women, and children, and by the international community s failures to respond effectively to this ongoing tragedy. In anticipation of the Year of Mercy, 2016, we join with Pope Francis in proclaiming that, "The experience of mercy becomes visible in the witness of concrete signs as Jesus himself taught us." We therefore come together in a spirit of unity to call on: A. all parties involved in the conflict to facilitate unhindered access throughout Syria to humanitarian workers and relief supplies; B. all governments to provide aid in the form of funds, personnel and expertise to neighboring countries that are hosting large numbers of refugees; C. countries that have the capacity to accept refugees to increase the number they are accepting, simplify the resettlement process, and provide the full protections of international refugee and asylum law; D. all nations to support the United Nations resolutions that address the violence in Syria and the need for humanitarian aid. While recognizing the complexity of this situation, we do not accept that war is a solution. We call on the United Nations to work toward a peaceful resolution to this conflict and other major conflicts throughout the world. As Holy Cross religious we are inspired by the words and example of our founder, Blessed Basil Moreau, who called on us to "prepare the world for better times than our own." We stand together in solidarity with persons of good will who are moved by compassion and seek fullness of life for all of God's people.
