4 Service and Immersion Archbishop Hoban High School Eleven Archbishop Hoban High School students, led by Hoban board member Father Mike Ausperk and Hoban Social Studies teacher Jason Dzik, made a service and immersion experience in Ghana from Aug , While in West Africa, the group helped with landscaping at the new Saint Brother André High School, opening in September to 10th graders. The group also toured Ghanaian cultural sites and experienced local customs. The students were Gracie Bagdon, Michael Davies, Emily Day, Delaney Erks, John Frola, Mary Gutbrod, Elizabeth Hillegas, Claire Penney, Alison Ritenour, Megan Sutterluety and Wendy Weng. 5 BEST OF THE WEEK AUGUST 21 - AUGUST 25, 2017 Every Friday this school year, "Best of the Week" will recognize St. Edward High School's commitment to authentic instruction by highlighting the people and programs that define the St. Ed's experience. LESSON OF THE WEEK WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN EDSMAN? The St. Edward High School mission calls for the "formation of young men in a faith-based tradition that is God-centered and emphasizes the acceptance of each person." These young men at St. Ed's enter a lifelong brotherhood, rooted in educating their minds and hearts to have the competence to see and the courage to act as men of faith. But what does it truly mean to be an Edsman? This summer, faculty members brainstormed and selected the following seven community standards rooted in our Holy Cross mission of faith, excellence, relationships, and servant leadership that define what it means to be an Edsman. At this morning's all-school liturgy, senior class president Charlie Green addressed the student body regarding the standards they are expected to live up to as Edsmen. Grit The relentless determination to keep pursuing a desired goal and never give up. We are men who work through challenges and obstacles set before us. Character The integrity to consistently do the right thing. We act in humility, knowing that our successes are gifts given and deeply intertwined with the help of others. Trust The belief through faith that God is good and has a plan. Thus, we can also trust others in our St. Edward family who are supporting us. Respect The act of holding a person in high regard and giving honor to all. Respect is granted to all our community and to ourselves in the form of self-respect. Self-Sacrifice The capacity to be generous to others and see all as neighbors. This generosity stems from our ability to empathize with those with whom we interact

6 Family The understanding that together we are part of something greater than ourselves. We develop bonds that make us brothers in unity. Accountability Holding ourselves and our brothers to our standards. It involves frank and respectful communication as we hold each other to the truth of our actions. By upholding these standards both within and outside the St. Ed's community, Edsmen not only live out our mission in their daily lives, but also continue to grow in maturation, fostered by the values set forth by the Holy Cross tradition. The above document was created by a team of faculty, staff, and administrators who worked throughout the summer to author the text. The mass was our opening school mass, during which we celebrate our yearly theme. Our theme this year is "With All Your Heart" - words taken from the St. Edward Fight Song. This year's theme is focused on our mission's pillar of excellence, with a focus on excellence being more effort than outcome. KC McKenna '00 Labor Day Picnic 2017 Twenty-three in number joined together at the Coloma cottage to celebrate Labor Day. Joseph Fox again staged a fine picnic meal along with Douglas Roach. The temperature was the best ever. There were no swimmers nor were there boaters on Lake Michigan. The waters were too dangerous with rough waves and undertows. In most areas there was no beach with waters and waves hitting the clifts. Many pictures are shown on pages following
