12 Coming soon! Canticum Novum Gregorian Chant for Today s Choirs From scholar Anthony Ruff, OSB, associate professor of theology and liturgical music at St. John s University, comes a collection of Gregorian chant for choirs. The book contains 100 hymns and antiphons with psalm verses for every season and occasion perfect for prelude, at the preparation of gifts, or during Communion. These practical compositions range from very easy to moderately difficult and are drawn from the Graduale Simplex (GS), Antiphonale Monasticum (AM), Liber Hymnarius (LH), and Graduale Romanum / Graduale Triplex (GR/GT). A word-by-word English translation of the Latin responses is provided to aid the singers understanding. The psalm verses are in Latin and English on facing pages with easy-to-follow pointing to match the psalm tones. All chant melodies are on both four- and five-lined staves; this provides the perfect way to double-check your reading of the traditional notation, and also presents two notation options from which to choose, according to your preference. The English psalm verses will be from the Revised Grail Psalter (publication date pending final approval from the Holy See). The psalm tones for the English verses are from St. Meinrad s Archabbey. Father Ruff has corrected many of the melodies in accordance with the most significant manuscripts and the latest chant editions. Early neumes of the St. Gall school from Hartker (H) and Einsiedeln (E) are also provided for those who wish to consult the early neumes to aid their interpretation. The introductory material will provide guidance for interpreting and performing this form of notation. Ample explanatory materials will be included: helpful charts with names and explanations of both the early, lineless neumes as well as the fourline, square-note neumes; an explanation of the psalm text pointing; and individual commentaries on each chant that will highlight significant details for interpretation. Lastly, a demonstration recording of twelve chants from Canticum Novum will be available (CD-821). This disc will provide a very helpful model (by St. John s Gregorian Chant Schola) of singing these chants, while also representing the broad range of chants in the complete collection easy to moderately difficult, long and short, some psalm verses in Latin, others in English.
