1 HE RĀRANGI PAPA KUPU KATORIKA A CATHOLIC WORD LIST Prepared by Deacon Danny Karatea-Goddard This Papa Kupu resource comprises words and phrases specific to their use in the Catholic Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. Māori speakers will recognise many of the words differ from those translations in other Māori English dictionaries. This is because many of the original Māori words used by our Catholic tūpuna were originally derived from the Latin language, not English. An example Latin te reo Māori English Te reo Māori Stephanus Tewano Steven Tīpene Christus Kerito Christ Karaiti This is a living document so please or contact me if you have alternative words that are used in your locality and I will gladly include these. There are dialectical differences in te reo Māori throughout Aotearoa New Zealand that adds to the beauty and richness of our language. Please feel free to contact me for a kupu word, question a kupu or to add a kupu. I will update this Papa Kupu as time allows. dkarateagoddard@gmail.com or dkaratea-goddard@pndiocese.org.nz I would like to acknowledge Te Rōpū Whakamāori, a working party that convenes under the National Liturgy Office, an agency of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference. Many of the phrases and words have come from the revised translation of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. Hēoi anō ki a koutou, kei ōku pakeke e Pā Henare Tate koutou ko Pā Mikaere Ryan, ko Pā Tony Brown, ko Pā Trevor Murray, ko Robert Newson, ko Pateriki Butler, ko Hūhana (Sue) Pirini, ko Judy Tuilomu, ka nui te mihi, ka nui te aroha. E te iwi whakapono, pānuitia, kōrerotia to tātou reo rangatira, to tātou reo Māori. Ngā whakapainga. Deacon Danny Karatea-Goddard Kākāriki, Feilding 1
