Rev. Father Christopher Zaferes April 2018 My dear friends, We find ourselves on the cusp of the greatest feast of the year. It is so great a feast that it is not considered among the feasts but is seen as above them all, and as the source of them all: the Pascha of the Lord. The Resurrection of Christ is at once the most basic Christian belief and the most important. St. Paul tells us, "If Christ had not risen then our faith is in vain" (1 Cor ). Put otherwise, belief in Christ's Resurrection is what makes us Christians. Because we believe in Christ's victory over death we trust that we too will pass through death to new life. A life eternal without pain, sorrow, or suffering. In the Orthodox East, we use the word Pascha in regards to the Lord's Resurrection rather than Easter. The word itself is of Hebrew origin and means Passover. Historically, it referred to the "angel of death" passing over the houses of the people of God, protecting them from the seventh plague of Egypt (when all the firstborn children in Egypt were smitten). This event came before the chosen people of God passed through the miraculously parted Red Sea as if on dry land a migration from slavery to freedom. Fulfilling the pattern of these historical events recorded in the Old Testament, the Resurrection of Christ is a Passover from death to life and from slavery to freedom. Hence on the Feast itself we chant, "It is the Day of Resurrection, let us be radiant, O ye people; Pascha, the Lord's Pascha: for from death to life, and from earth to heaven, Christ God hath brought us, as we sing the song of victory." The Resurrection of Christ is our Pascha (Passover), not from bondage in Egypt, but from our bondage to sin, granting us freedom from it. Christ's Resurrection is also death's passover over us (as in Egypt before). As Christians, we do not say that our loved ones are dead, but rather that they are asleep in the Lord. Death no longer has a total victory. It is overcome. We experience separation from our loved ones but that is overcome when we will be resurrected at the end of time. Again, St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians tells us, "But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive" (1 Cor ). May the light of Christ, which illumines all, shine in our hearts this Paschal season, and may we all rush to meet our risen Lord who became one of us that we might be one with Him in his glorious Resurrection! God bless you and keep you! In Christ, Father Christopher Zaferes 4

President s Corner ~ Harry Ruska April 2018 I am excited to serve the Annunciation Parish as the newest President of the Parish Council, effective January Given that this is my first opportunity to address the community in this role I want to outline some of the priorities of the Parish Council for the next few months. In addition to fulfilling our duties as outlined in the Uniform Parish Regulations, our focus will be to align our activities with the Mission and Core Values established a couple of years ago, based on the valuable input received from several focus groups. In this issue, I will focus on three of the six core values for our Parish, namely: We experience a sense of acceptance, joy, peace, belonging and koinonia to all in our community and to all those that walk through our doors as one family. We follow Jesus command to Go Forth by sharing Christ s love beyond our cathedral walls to those in physical and spiritual need. We commit, in thanksgiving, our time, talent and treasure to support our cathedral by safeguarding the ministerial, physical and financial needs to ensure the health of His Church and to further the Gospel message now and in the future. The goals of the Parish Council this year will be to link the activities of the Parish Council to these core values. Specifically, our goals this year are to: 1. Create a Council of Ministries to provide a forum to seek opportunities to combine efforts where common goals exist, share calendars, and help eliminate barriers for progress, 2. Increase communication on the great work being done by the current Ministries in hope of expanding their reach and connecting with those that might want to participate in future initiatives, and 3. Expand the number of ministries where there is an unfulfilled need and an interest for participation by members in the community. To accomplish the above, the following steps have been taken to get the process started: 1. At my request and with their enthusiastic support, John Bizios, Past President of the Parish Council and Helen Rankin, former PC member and Director of our Catechetical School, have agreed to facilitate, with the blessing of the Dean of our Cathedral Fr. Demetrios, the first, of hopefully many, Council of Ministries to be held within the next two months. Our initial attempt will be to hold these quarterly, 2. The Committees of the Parish Council have been aligned with supporting the Ministries by providing a direct liaison between individual ministry leaders and the Parish Council. The Committee chairpersons are charged with providing the ministries with financial and administrative support to achieve their goals. Lastly, the Parish Council extends a huge thank you to all that were involved with hosting the Metropolis GOYA Basketball Tournament at the end of January. Despite the challenges with using outside facilities, the event went smoothly thanks to the efforts of many. The organizing team of parents, coaches and GOYANs were challenged by a short planning window and worked hard to create a memorable weekend that represented our community well. With love in Christ, Harry Ruska 5

Stewardship Thoughts on Stewardship Our parish is filled with lovely people who love the Lord and love our church. Our hope is that throughout the year we can share with you some of their stories- what inspires them, why they love the Church and what we can learn from them. Enjoy this special contribution from the Baron s! First, we should probably introduce ourselves- we re Michael and Susan Baron and we were recently married in the church. Being involved in the church means a lot to us, whether we re teaching Sunday School, helping with the Holy Thursday retreat, or volunteering at the festival (and not just because that s where we met!), it is a way for us to give back to our community. But, to both of us, there are many more reasons we are glad to be connected to our church and our faith than just a community. One of our favorite things about the Orthodox Church is its timelessness and changelessness. It is rooted in the past and the tradition of the church gives us clarity even in a changing, modern world. Our faith, the faith of the apostles and the early church, is constant and not suspect to new interpretations or the latest fad. Thus, we are part of something larger than just ourselves- we have a connection to the faith of our ancestors, to our families and their culture. Further, it is comforting to know that we not only offer prayers on their behalf, but that they also intercede for us. However, our favorite thing about belonging to the Church is that no matter where we go in the world or where our lives take us, we, and any future children, will always have a home. There is always a place where we can hear the liturgy and participate in a mystery that is both ancient and yet, somehow, immediate. No matter what our future holds, we will always have the church with us to guide us, to help us work out our salvation each and every day of our lives. Thank you to everyone who has made a commitment to support our Cathedral. You are helping sustain more than 35 ministries, groups and activities that serve our parish and make it a dynamic, living example of God in our midst. If you haven't yet completed a stewardship pledge, prayerfully consider what you will return to God and His church in return for all that He has given to you. Please visit to complete a stewardship pledge or complete the form on pages 7 & 8 and return to the church office. Thank you! 9

Greek Language School ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ Greek Language School News Nadia Yokarini-Kotsonis Academic Principal Koullis Peratopoulos - Administrative Principal The 2018 calendar year saw our children spending time with Mrs. Fouras in the kitchen. Our children, with the direction from Mrs Fouras and their teachers, got their hands into some Greek pastries and keftedes! As we do each year, every class had the opportunity to bake something Greek and share it with their families after school. The children always have fun in doing so by wearing their aprons and their mixing gloves. The last several weeks our children have been busy preparing for our Greek Independence Day program. Our program will take place on Sunday, March 25 th together with the Church School children celebrating both The Annunciation and Greek Independence Day. Fun in the Kitchen 12

Greek Language School Fun in the Kitchen Our visit to the Ohio State University and the Modern Greek Program will take place this year on March 24 th. With Easter just around the corner our children will be helping with the Palm Sunday cross making and close out the school year with our annual certificate ceremony and lunch gathering in late May. 13

Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society Dear Philoptochos Members and Annunciation Family, I had the pleasure of attending the Daffodil Luncheon in Pittsburgh. Their charity of choice was Dress for Success. This organization provides not only clothing to women for job interviews, but counsels them for entering the job market, provides child care and transportation. Entering an interview confident in one s appearance is a vital part of the job application process thus helping women achieve financial independence. If you have clothing that you no longer use or need, consider donating it to this worthy cause. MENTORING At our membership drive in February, Dr. Greg Gillum spoke about the mentoring program for high school seniors in Columbus. This program provides support to teens facing personal or academic obstacles to graduation. This is not a tutoring program, but counseling and problem solving, for many of these students face financial or family issues or crises which detract from their studies and place them at risk of not graduating. The mentor is an advocate for these young people. The training for this program was held on March 8 th. If you are interested, please contact Helen Rankin at helenpr@aol.com. If there is enough interest, we could hold a second training session. NATIONAL CLERGY LAITY CONGRESS The biennial clergy laity congress will be held in Boston, July 2-7. At our February meeting, we voted to pay for two delegates to the Congress. This conference is a great way to meet other Philoptochos members and learn from their programs and initiatives. It is a wonderful, inspiring, albeit exhausting, week. National Philoptochos has many programs and initiatives. Their newest program is an anti-bullying campaign, which seeks to educate our youth about the dangers of social media, technology and opioid addiction. Please check their website to learn more about this initiative and others. Wishing you a blessed Lenten season as we prepare and journey towards the Glorious Resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. All the pews and aisles were filled with people, not just any people, YOUNG people. It felt so good. After the service I went to the kitchen and there too there was joy of the members of the Olympic Committee who were preparing in good humor the pancakes and the eggs for those hungry young visitors. The pictures cannot capture the true feelings but they are documentation of the good state of our Cathedral. We are blessed. ~Submitted by Paul Taiganides Outgoing Parish Council President John Bizios passes the gavel to newly elected Parish Council President Harry Ruska. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Columbus, Ohio Permit No. 853 Sigma Initiation 2018 MISSION STATEMENT OF OUR PARISH Our community, united in our Orthodox Christian faith, aspires to live a Christ-centered life as set forth by our Holy Tradition. Strengthened by our Hellenic culture and the actions and sacrifices of our Greek-American founders and predecessors, we live as one, multicultural parish family sharing Christ s love in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. CORE VALUES We renew our faith continually through active participation in worship, sacraments, discipleship and prayer. We experience a sense of acceptance, joy, peace, belonging and koinonia to all in our community and to all those that walk through our doors as one family. We follow Jesus command to Go Forth by sharing Christ s love beyond our cathedral walls to those in physical and spiritual need. We are responsible to inspire and teach future generations on the traditions and values of living our Orthodox faith. We commit, in thanksgiving, our time, talent and treasure to support our cathedral by safeguarding the ministerial, physical and financial needs to ensure the health of His Church and to further the Gospel message now and in the future. We create an environment where we respect our collective cultural identities while celebrating our Hellenic traditions, history, language and heritage. 38
