4 rom Liturgy Documents RESTORATION / RENEWAL O TE LITURY; TE RESPONSORIAL PSALM The responsorial psalm has great liturgical and pastoral significance because it is "an integral part of liturgy of word." As a rule, responsorial psalm should be sung. The singing of psalm, or even of response alone, is a great help toward understanding and meditating on psalmss spiritual meaning. To foster congregations singing, every means available in various cultures is to be employed. The responsorial psalm is sung or recited by psalmist or cantor at lectern. 1 This unique and very important song (The Responsorial Psalm) is response to first lesson. The new lectionary's determination to match content of psalms to me of reading is reflected in its listing of 900 refrains. The liturgy of word comes more fully to life if between first two readings a cantor sings psalm and all sing response. Since most groups cannot learn a new response every week, seasonal refrains are offered in lectionary itself and in Simple radual. Or psalms and refrains may also be used, including psalms arranged in responsorial form and metrical and similar versions of psalms, provided y are used in accordance with principles of Simple radual and are selected in harmony with liturgical season, feast or occasion. The choice of texts which are not from psalter is not extended to chants between readings. To facilitate reflection, re maybe a brief period of silence between first reading and responsorial psalm. 2 In certain parts of world, especially mission lands, people have ir own musical traditions and se play a great part in ir religious and social life. Thus...due importance is to be attached to ir music and a suitable place given to it, not only in forming ir attitude toward religion, but also in adapting worship to ir native genius. In Latin Church pipe organ is to be held in high esteem...but or instruments also may be admitted for use in divine worship...this applies, however, only on condition that instruments are suitable, or can be made suitable, for sacred use, are in accord with dignity of place of worship, and truly contribute to uplifting of faithful. Composers, filled with Christian spirit, should feel that ir vocation is to develop sacred music and to increase its store of treasures. Let m produce compositions having qualities proper to genuine sacred music, not confining mselves to works that can be sung only by large choirs, but providing also for needs of small choirs and for active participation of entire assembly of faithful. The texts intended to be sung must always be consistent with Catholic teaching; indeed y should be drawn chiefly from holy Scripture and from liturgical sources. 3 Just as great liturgical music of past is to be remembered, cherished and used, so also rich diversity of cultural heritage of many peoples of our country today must be recognized, fostered and celebrated. The United States of America is a nation of nations, a country in which people speak many tongues, live ir lives in diverse ways, celebrate events in song and music in folkways of ir cultural, ethnic and racial roots. Liturgical music today must be as diverse and multi-cultural as members of assembly. Pastors and musicians must encourage not only use of traditional music of or languages, but also composition of new liturgical music appropriate to various cultures. Likewise great musical gifts of ispanic, Black and or ethnic communities in Church should enrich whole Church in United States in a dialogue of cultures. 4 The Church in United States continues on its journey of liturgical renewal and spiritual growth. It is hope of Bishops' Committee on Liturgy that this statement (Liturgical Music Today) will be a furr encouragement in our progress along that course. The words of Saint Augustine remind us of our pilgrimage: "You should sing as wayfarers do-sing but continue your journey. Do not be lazy, but sing to make your journey more enjoyable. Sing, but keep going." 5 1. see LMIn see MCW see CSL see LMT see LMT 74 ii
5 ROM TE COMPOSERS DESK All my life, since childhood, I have been spiritually allied to and guided by psalms. These, oldest of worlds musical lyrics, still manage to tug at core of our lives of prayer and manage to convey an incredible array of human emotion into direct expression to Yahweh. Moreover, it is remarkably glorious celebrating same seasonal repertoire of liturgical psalms of our 3 rd century Christian ancestors, and just as enlivening to tackle creation of new settings of psalms not normally familiar to us worshipers. I composed se many arrangements as a prayerful compulsion, as a celebration of oly Spirit moving among all of ods people at prayer. I am guided by spirit of churchs intent to restore liturgy to a prominence in our daily lives. I endeavor, even in my own musical and harmonic vocabulary, to produce a response that is communal and collective; I am convinced that all of us share that same strong need to express, to od directly, and to one anor, those rich and prayerful emotions leaping from psalms lyrics. A word to psalmist; do prepare your presentation, and convey love, warmth, sorrow and joy in your verses. When singing portions where od speaks to his people, let sense of psalm communicate. Permit assembly sing its antiphon (refrain) back to you without singing ir response to or for m; that is, honor antiphonal ideal. A word to accompanist; enjoy intent of accompaniment. If you need, simplify things to suit you. Unlike chant verses, which can be perfunctory and do nothing to illuminate verses, your preparation and confidence can only add to power of living word proclaimed, which is what responsorial psalm really is during liturgy of word; hence its proclamation from ambo (lectern). Be moved yourself, and moving ors can n be possible. iii
