5 Composer Notes Listen, Lord, and Answer Me My first encounter of Psalm 130 has remained with me all my life On an ordinary school day found myself at the funeral of a young classmate had ust oined the school after moving from another town The small church was packed, with hardly enough room to breathe But when the psalm began was transfixed Pere Gelineau s setting was new and had never heard the words before irst the haunting refrain place all my trust in you, my God; all my hope is in your saving word Then the verses, Out of the depths cry to you, O Lord was confronted by the despair expressed in the psalm, and pondered the meaning The emotion was unfamiliar to me then, but came to understand it a couple of years later when my brother was killed in a road accident Without realizing, had found a vocabulary in the psalms Walter Brueggemann describes Psalm 130 as a text of disorientation, one that plays a vital role in the development of an informed, honest faith ietrich Bonhoeffer refers to the Psalter as the great school of prayer He writes: the child learns to speak because the parent speaks to the child The child learns the language of the parent So we learn to speak because God has spoken and speaks to us n the language of the ather in heaven, God s children learn to speak with God Repeating God s own words, we begin to pray to God n Life Together, Bonhoeffer writes: A psalm that makes us falter and horrifies us, is a hint to us that someone else is praying, not we; that the One who is here protesting his innocence, who is invoking God s udgment, who has come to such infinite depths of suffering, is none other than esus Christ himself He it is who is praying here, and not only here but in the whole psalter He prayed the Psalter and now it has become his prayer for all time esus Christ prays the Psalter through his congregation 6
