2 TODAY S GOSPEL READING Այսօրվա Ավետարանը Matthew 22:34-23:39 34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? 37 He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: 42 What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he? They said to him, The son of David. 43 He said to them, How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, 44 The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet? 45 If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son? 46 No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. 23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses seat; 3 therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. 4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. 5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. 6 They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, 7 and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. 8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. 9 And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father the one in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. 13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. 16 Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath. 3 Holy Communion In the Armenian Church Holy Communion is distributed in the following manner. The communicant stands before the priest, makes the sign of the cross and says: Megha Asdoodzo, "I have sinned against God." The priest then places a small particle of our Lord's Body and Blood -- the bread having been dipped into the wine -- directly into the mouth of the communicant. The communicant again makes the sign of the Cross and steps aside for others to approach the blessed sacrament. After all have received Holy Communion, using the chalice to imprint the sign of the Cross over the communicants, the priest imparts the blessing of Psalm 28:9 : "Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance; shepherd them and lift them up from henceforth until eternity". Distribution of mas in the armenian ChurCh taking mas The Person giving Should say; Մաս եւ բաժին եղիցի քեզ ի Սուրբ Պատարագիս Mas yev pajin yeghitzi kez ee Sourp Badarakis May this be to you a share and a portion from the Divine Liturgy. The Person receiving should say; Բաժին իմ Աստուած յաւիտեան Pajin im Asdvadz Havidian God is my portion for ever 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath. 19 How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; 21 and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it; 22 and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. 28 So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, 30 and you say, If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets. 31 Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors. 33 You snakes, you brood of vipers! How can you escape being sentenced to hell? 34 Therefore I send you prophets, sages, and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, 35 so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation. 37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 38 See, your house is left to you, desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

As citizens of the Kingdom of God, we the Church find ourselves in between two advents of Jesus Christ. The first coming of Christ was one of humility, the King of Kings born as an infant in a cave. The second advent of Christ is one of power and glory. Christianity, then, is learning to live in between these two advents now, to participate in the life of the Kingdom of God that is present and is still to come. It is the present life that Jesus addresses before His last line, For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' In Sunday s Gospel, we read at length a dialogue between Jesus and two different sects or factions of Jews in firstcentury Palestine, the Pharisees and Sadducees. With love, Jesus sternly exposes and denounces those who teach a different path to greatness than the path He teaches, one that leads to Himself. He goes on to challenge their poor leadership as evangelists, their oath making, stewardship and giving, and overall integrity. He calls them out for going though the motions, obeying traditions for the sake of preservation, meanwhile, blocking others from entering the Kingdom of God and maturing in their faith. Just as Jesus calls out the hypocrisy of living as a whitewashed tomb, appearing holy on the outside but unclean on the inside, St. John Chrysostom gives us a
5 profound warning of how to live, how to examine ourselves before the coming of Christ: The members of the body of Christ have become a tomb of uncleanness? Remember your sonship and how you were born. Consider of what things you have been counted worthy. Recall what sort of garment you received in baptism. You were intended to be a temple without fault, beautiful, not adorned with gold or pearls but with the spirit that is more precious than these. You are hardly ready to appear in the city above if you remain a sepulcher below. Christ s commandments are how to live now in between His two advents. And when He returns He will ask of the Church the same questions with which He left us. Do the actions of the Pharisees and Sadducees reflect our own lives, our parish life, or do we gloss over them as if He is speaking to someone else? Is it thinkable that Jesus laments over the Armenian Church? What in the church is more important than integrity, being a witness, and discipling others? Perhaps we allow finances, politics, culture, or other sacred cows to compete with the true path to greatness. Have we become complacent, playing it safe, insisting on doing business as usual? Do our lives reflect the Body of Christ ready and awaiting the coming and appearance of our Lord? Be ready always, living each moment as if Jesus Christ is coming, as if He is already here! By Dn. Eric Vozzy 2018 STEWARDSHIP The Joy of the Generosity is on the way to reaching its $50,000 goal. You do not need to be a dues paying member of the Church to be a steward. 6 Sunday of Advent FAR Supports Syrian-Armenian Business Owner The Sixth Sunday of Great Lent is called the Sunday of Advent. This Sunday teaches us about the first Advent of Christ His Incarnation: His Holy Birth when God became Man. This proved the Truth found in the Scriptures that by the coming of the Savior, a second chance was given to mankind to be guided on the path leading towards salvation. This Sunday also symbolizes the Second Advent. In the Gospels and Apostolic Letters there are many references dedicated to the Second Advent, where our Lord warns us about His return. In the Gospel of St. Matthew, Christ says, Watch out and do not let anyone fool you. Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, I am the Messiah! and they will fool many people. You are going to hear the noise of battles close by and the news of battles far away Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. There will be famines and earthquakes everywhere And you will be hated by all nations for my Name s sake Many false prophets will appear and fool many people. Such will be the spread of evil that many people s love will grow cold. But whoever holds out to the end will be saved (Mt 24:4-13). The message of this Sunday is a call for endurance, piety and modesty. Through these we can patiently wait for the Glorious Resurrection of Christ, the purification of our souls and the triumph of the True Faith. All Christian Churches celebrate the feast of the Sunday of Advent. Lousig, 35, was born and raised in Syria. Six years ago, she took a 10-day vacation to Armenia with her husband Arman, and their daughter, Alik. They decided to stay forever, beginning their new life by searching for jobs, a kindergarten, and a place to live. Lousig had always wanted to cook professionally. In Armenia, she attended different culinary courses and eventually opened up Moon Bakery nine months ago. Just a few days later, she received a grant and a zero-interest loan from Fund for Armenian Relief s Small Business Assistance Program, which supports Syrian-Armenian business owners, and ultimately helps to lay a foundation for their economic integration in Armenia. She used the financial support to purchase a refrigerator, an oven, a mixer, and various containers and cake decorating equipment. Applications for Diocesan scholarships are now available online. The application deadline for the academic year is May 20, Each year the Diocese awards scholarships to promising youth who are headed to college. The Diocese seeks students who are active in their local parishes and have assumed leadership roles in their communities. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in four-year undergraduate programs. For information, contact Maria Barsoumian at (212)
7 Commemoration of St. Gregory the Illuminator s torments and commitment to the pit This feast is the first one among the three commemoration days dedicated to the memory of St. Gregory the Illuminator, the first Catholicos of All Armenians. According to the Armenian Church Calendar, it is celebrated on the eve of the Fifth Sunday during the period of Great Lent. The feast is dedicated to the torments which St. Gregory suffered during his imprisonment. According to historical sources, St. Gregory the Illuminator was the son of Anak Partev, a knight and nobleman, who killed the Armenian King Khosrov Arshakouni. In retaliation, Anak is executed by the Armenians. His son, Gregory, lived and studied in Caesarea, and was brought up as a pious Christian. Gregory returns to Armenia as an adult and becomes a member of the royal court. King Tiridates (Trdat), the son of King Khosrov and heir to the throne, appoints Gregory as the Chancellor of the Armenian Kingdom. Tiridates, learning that Gregory is a Christian and the son of Anak, subjects him to severe tortures and commits Gregory to death, by imprisoning him in a deep underground pit. In 301 A.D., after spending 13 years in the pit, St. Gregory the Illuminator is freed from the dungeon and emerges to spread the Light of Christ in Armenia. He thus becomes the first pontiff of the Armenian Church, baptizes the royal family, and evangelizes the whole of the Armenian Nation. Armenia becomes the first nation in the world to officially proclaim Christianity as her state religion. St. Gregory the Illuminator is recognized by all of Christendom as a Saint, and he is commemorated in all traditional Christian Churches.
