Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church. Supported by the stewards of the parish. Petra News J u n e / J u l y Pentecost Sunday: The Faithful with Vision Christ s Church is not an institution, it is a new life with Christ and in Christ, directed by the Holy Spirit. - Sergius Bulgakov We have all received the advice of the importance of setting a goal for our life. Without a goal a person will wander around in circles and experience a life with no purpose. God has a vision for each and everyone one of us. God had a definite plan when He sent His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ to earth. God s plan for us is salvation from sin and death. Jesus who willingly suffered on the Cross, and Resurrected from the dead, carried out God s plan for us. Jesus chose His Disciples and empowered them with the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel and make new disciples. We are the new disciples, entrusted with His church, to continue God s work. The church of Sts Peter and Paul has a sacred duty to carry on the Orthodox Christian Faith we received from the Apostles of Jesus Christ on the day of Pentecost. The goal, vision and purpose of the church is to commit our lives to Christ, and become faithful workers of the church. The church will only be as good as the spiritual quality and dedication of their workers. God s plan for us is to dedicate our lives through prayer, piety and witness. When we follow God s plan, the church becomes a place of inspiration, and a home of Christian life. We are entering into the season of summer. Colorado is one of the most beautiful places to live, especially during the summer season. The time of summer can bring on the challenge to spiritually backslide in prayer and Sunday worship. God s plan is not for the faithful stewards of Sts Peter and Paul to take a summer break from church. The summer is a great time to welcome our neighbors and spend time with our friends and family. We have a goal this summer. Pentecost is celebrated on the first Sunday of June, and our Church Patron Saints will be celebrated at the end of June. There are 168 hours in the week. There are plenty of hours to enjoy the sunshine, parks, hikes, gardening and backyard grilling. It is very important for you to enjoy the summer, and break bread with your family and friends, and at the same time enjoy the blessings of Pentecost. There is no excuse to not committing at least 2 hours on every Sunday morning, the day of the Lord s

2 P a g e 2 Pentecost Sunday: The Faithful with Vision Christ s Church is not an institution, it is a new life with Christ and in Christ, directed by the Holy Spirit. Resurrection, and placing God first in our lives. Perhaps you will be traveling this summer. This is a great time to worship in a new city with your extended Orthodox family. The Lord has set our goal and provided us with a beautiful gift on the Feast of Pentecost. God will send His Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday (June 4). God has sent His Holy Spirit at Pentecost so that you will be grafted unto the Life-giving Trinity. The Holy Spirit at Pentecost descended on those whom Jesus had prepared to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and those who were united. You need to be present on the Sunday of Pentecost. We must follow the example of the faithful who on Pentecost were obedient to Christ s command, and waited in the upper room, devoting themselves to prayer. This is the goal of the Sts Peter and Paul Church. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. (Acts 1:14) Pentecost is coming at the right time for all of us. There is the temptation to become complacent in our faith, and forget our goal as Christians. Pentecost is the birth of the Church. The word church is derived from the Greek word ecclesia. Its ancient meaning denotes an assembly or gathering. Our goal as Christians is to be gathered and united with the Lord Jesus. When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (Acts 2:1) On the first Pentecost, the believers were gathered together, united in an assembly, that is the Church. We have received the gift of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. God has given us His grace through the Holy Spirit to do His will and carry out His mission to the world. Through the Holy Sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation, Confession and Holy Communion, the gifts God has given us will become a present reality in our lives. For the Church of Sts Peter and Paul to become a new life in Christ, we must use the God-given gifts, follow Christ, and serve His church. Let us all come together, united as a church family, on the Sunday of Pentecost, and kneel together thanking God for the gift of His Church, and His Divine Breath, the Holy Spirit, which has come to renew our commitment. - Father Jordan Brown P a g e 2

3 Taste of Orthodoxy 2017 Thank you to everyone who volunteered to take on a task or a booth for the festival so far. We only have a few more spots that need help. Please see Joanne Ashmun or Nicole Tsiouvaras if you may want to take one of these on: Loukoumades - Run the loukoumades booth by preparing ahead of the festival, finding people to work in the booth, set-up and clean-up of loukoumades booth Set-Up - This is a critical position that works best if you can be on-site for a few days leading up to the festival. Oversee placement of rental tents, set up smaller tents, set-up electrical, plus other general set-up tasks. Hosting - Looking for a few people to work near the entrance to the festival, greeting people, handing out Ad Books, answering questions. Great job for people who like to chat Parking - Tape off the parking lots to maximize our space. Can be done over several days/ evenings the week before the festival. Must be completed by Thursday night before festival. Volunteer Table - Hand out volunteer t-shirts, name tags, keep schedule of volunteers. Also handles Lost & Found and First Aid Kit. Rental Oversight - Responsible for renting equipment, lights, trash dumpsters, and portable toilets. Responsible for invoices, payments and return of rental equipment. Mostly phone work. Ad Book If you would like to place an ad in this year s festival Ad Book, please get in touch with Robin Glasener, robinglasener@outlook.com P a g e 3

4 Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We held our Spring Parish Assembly on Sunday May 7, 2017, in our parish hall, and in order to keep everyone in the community as informed as possible, we are providing a summary of the items discussed during the assembly. In order to continue to improve communication with the community, the Parish Council has introduced quarterly town hall meetings, as well as a new communication tool called Flocknote, which has the capability of notifications by , text, and even by phone. There was discussion around potentially moving the play structure to another location on our property or replacing it if necessary, due to structural problems. We still struggle to meet our Total Commitment obligation to the Archdiocese, but we are steadily working toward the goal of fully paying it. We will pay about $10,000 towards our 2016 assessment of $30,000, and we are working on sending regular payments for A committee has been formed to research new mortgage options for our church. We have a plethora of youth activities planned for the summer, including a BBQ at Fr. Jordan s and a family hike (check the Bulletin and Petra News) Work on the dome is ongoing. The contractor (B&M Roofing) is working through the permitting process with Boulder County, as well as getting color samples fabricated. The Parish Council applied for and received a $25,000 grant from the Kulis Foundation to help to fully fund the dome project. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox cathedral in Houston donated 34 pews to our parish, and the delivery of those pews from Houston to our storage in Longmont was also donated (worth several thousand dollars). We are looking for donations to cover the cost of storage and refinishing the pews (estimated $300 per pew to refinish). Philoptochos was planning the Luau fundraiser, and much of the proceeds would go to our church. There are also new additions to the bookstore, including a new lending library. Additionally, community participation money collected in the fundraiser for the Boulder Safehouse was excellent. For our annual festival, Taste of Orthodoxy: a new logo was designed by Rick Leonidas. We still need a chairperson for several booths (see Nicole Tsiouvaras). Stewardship: the 2017 Stewardship participation to date is very positive (same number of stewards as this time last year with increases in overall pledged money, and average and median pledges; (the number of Stewardship cards received to date is down vs. last year, however); it costs $770 per day to operate the church, Stewardship is 60% of our annual budget, and our goal for 2017 is to reach $200,000 in giving (ca. $167,000 pledged to date). We have about 46 families/people who are giving regularly but have not filled out a Stewardship card. The software that we use to track giving (Servant Keeper) has been updated, and the Stewardship Committee will be ing quarterly statements (paper copies can still be obtained). Treasurer s Report: for 2016, expenses were down by about 10% vs and giving was strong; for 2017 year-to-date, spending is within 1% of budget, but Stewardship is not completely funding parish operations. The Denver chapter of AHEPA donated office furniture to us. As you can see, we have a lot of exciting things going on in our community. If you have further questions about any of these items, or anything else, please be sure to see any of the Parish Council members. 5 Parish Council: Update on Church Pews Our New Pews Have Arrived! As discussed at the General Assembly, our new pews have arrived from the Houston Annunciation Cathedral! The pews were generously donated by the Houston Parish to Saints Peter & Paul, as they are undergoing a complete renovation. The transportation from Houston was fully donated, and the pews are now in storage in Longmont awaiting modification and installation. We hope to have them ready for installation by the end of the summer. We will soon have beautiful and uniform pews with kneelers and pads! It is estimated that the cost for new pews would be around $75,000 - $100,000. The pews are an unexpected and incredible gift for Sts. Peter and Paul. The donated pews need to be slightly modified in order to properly fit in the church. The cost to modify one row will be $ Please prayerfully consider donating one row. Please visit with one of our Parish Council Members or Father Jordan with any questions. Thank you! P a g e 5

11 News Sunday & Events School Thank you to all of our wonderful teachers for their dedication and great participation from our families for another wonderful year of Sunday School! K-2nd Grade (Bruce Geerdes) This year we went through the "Blessed is the Kingdom" workbook. We got through the first three parts: "Creation in Paradise and the Fall", "God Sends His Son" and "Christ Resurrects/ Sending the Holy Spirit". 3rd-5th Grade (Cyndi Yost & Nicole Tsiouvaras) This year in the 3rd to 5th grade Sunday school, we focused on service to the church. Our studies and lively discussions included the various ways both ordained and lay-people serve the Orthodox Church, the unifying work of the ecumenical councils, understanding our most basic declaration of faith: the Nicene Creed, and the foundational work of Saint Paul. We truly enjoyed our time with your children and wish them a wonderful summer holiday! 6th-8th Grade (Elias Elias & Lia Peulen) This year, the middle school class focused primarily on Christ s life and other major events in the church. Going beyond simply learning about each event and teaching, we opted for a more discussion based environment, where students were able to compare these teachings to their own lives, and the lives of their peers. Another aspect of the class was learning crucial practices like how the bible is structured and how to look up specific passages. We thoroughly enjoyed teaching this wonderful group of students-enjoy your summer break! P a g e 1 1
