Concluding Prayers Hail holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. O Holy Spirit, renew your wonders in this our age as in a new Pentecost, and grant that your Church, praying perseveringly and insistently with one heart and mind together with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and guided by blessed Peter, may increase the reign of the Divine Saviour. Amen. (Prayer of Blessed Pope John XXIII to convoke Vatican Council II) V. St. N. (Patron of the place or Saint of the day) R. Pray for us. Latin Chants The four Marian antiphons are normally sung after Night Prayer. Since the Companions do not normally pray that office together, we sing a Marian hymn after Evening Prayer. Alma Redemptoris Mater Advent through February 2 Ave Regina Caelorum Lent through Good Friday Regina Coeli Easter Season Salve Regina Remainder of Liturgical Year Alma Redemptoris Mater V. Lord, protect us from the snares of the enemy. R. St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in this day of battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly hosts, by the Divine power, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. V. O Mary, Mother of Priests and first companion of the Cross, obtain for our Society, and for the whole Church, an increase in vocations. R. Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To thee do we come, before thee we stand sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in thy clemency, hear and answer us. Amen. 6 19

11. The priest returns to kneeling at the front of the altar, removes the veil, and leads the Divine Praises: (usually said or sung together) Blessed be God Blessed be His Holy Name Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man Blessed be the Name of Jesus Blessed be His most Sacred Heart Blessed be His most Precious Blood Blessed be Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete Blessed be the Great mother of God, Mary most holy Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception Blessed be her glorious Assumption Blessed be the name of Mary, virgin and mother Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse Blessed be God in His angels and in His saints May the heart of Jesus in the most Blessed Sacrament be praised, adored and loved with grateful affection, at every moment, in all the tabernacles of the world, until the end of time. Amen. OR O My God, I believe, I adore, I trust, and I love You. I beg pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not trust, and do not love You. (3x) 12. The prayer leader begins the following hymn (or another suitable song): Holy God, we praise Thy name. Lord of all we bow before Thee. All on earth Thy scepter claim. All in heaven above adore Thee. Infinite Thy vast domain, everlasting is Thy reign. (2x) 13. The priest reposes the Blessed Sacrament and returns to the front of the altar to chant the seasonal Marian antiphon before processing out. Note: In the absence of a priest or deacon, and with proper permission, an acolyte or commissioned lay extraordinary minister of Holy Communion may expose and repose the Blessed Sacrament. In such cases, an alb is to be worn, Benediction is omitted and incense is not used. Because the Divine Praises is a devotion used according to local custom (not required by the liturgical rite), it may be led by the presiding priest, by a cantor, or by the choir. It may also be said or sung by all in unison. 18 PRAYER OF THE COMPANIONS OF THE CROSS TO CHRIST CRUCIFIED O Jesus Christ Crucified, reigning now as the Risen Lord of all creation, fill me anew with your Holy Spirit and lead me by your Power and Wisdom. I choose you this day as my Saviour and Lord. I take up my cross and follow you, uniting myself to your Passion and work of redemption. I surrender myself completely to you and give you full permission to do with me as you will. I love you Jesus; use my life to extend the triumph of your Cross. Amen. IMPRIMATUR, +Terrence Prendergast SJ, Archbishop of Ottawa, January 25, 2012 MARIAN ENTRUSTMENT OF THE COMPANIONS OF THE CROSS O Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, model of Christian discipleship, our Queen, we give ourselves completely to Jesus through you. Be our Advocate and strong defence this day. Preserve our unity and fidelity to Holy Church. Guide us in the life of the Spirit. Keep us steadfast in our mission, and ever deepen our love for Christ and His Holy Cross. V. Lead us, O Mother of Priests R. To perfectly glorify Jesus Christ and the Father in the Holy Spirit. Amen. IMPRIMATUR, +Marcel Gervais, Archbishop of Ottawa, April 4,

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION TO JESUS THROUGH MARY O Blessed Virgin Mary / You are the first and perfect companion of the Cross / and so we the Society of the Companions of the Cross / desire to be totally yours. / We consecrate ourselves completely to Jesus through you. / Take all that we have and all that we are / as your possession and property. / Dispose of us entirely according to your good pleasure/ for the greater glory of Christ and His Holy Cross. We accept you as a precious gift from our Saviour Jesus Christ / as He gave His life for us on the Cross. / O Mother of the Lord / with all our love we receive you as our own Mother. / We venerate and honour you as our Queen / and desire to imitate you as our model of Christian discipleship. O maternal Advocate / we entrust to your Immaculate Heart all our needs and intentions. / Graciously present them to your Son. / Be our strong defence against the unclean spirit and all enemies of the Cross. / Keep us under the total Lordship of Jesus Christ / and help us to live out this commitment / in conscious daily submission to Him as Saviour and Lord. O Mother of God and Mother of priests / teach us to humble ourselves / and willingly embrace the Cross as our inspiration and rallying point: O Mother of fraternal love / who stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross with that first community of disciples / stand with us, preserve our unity, and keep us faithful to our common life. O Mother of the Church / strengthen our fidelity to Holy Church / the Bride of your Son / born from His side as He slept the sleep of death on the Cross. O Mother of the Word made flesh, instill in us a profound devotion to the Holy Eucharist, the perpetuation of the sacrifice of the Cross. O Spouse of the Holy Spirit / who lovingly consented to the sacrifice of Jesus / as He gave up His Spirit on the Cross / guide us in the life of the Spirit. / Teach us how to live in total reliance on God s power and God s wisdom. O Star of the New Evangelization / inflame our hearts with zeal to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ / who, lifted high on the Cross, draws all mankind to Himself. Finally, O loving Mother / keep us steadfast in our mission / and ever deepen our love for Christ and His Holy Cross/ the sign and instrument of our salvation. / Renew our determination to take up our cross daily and follow the Lord/ uniting ourselves to His Passion and work of redemption. / Strengthened and nourished by the Cross / may we rejoice in its triumph now and forever! Amen Several minutes before the conclusion of the Holy Hour, the priest kneels before the Blessed Sacrament and may lead an optional litany. 7. Then, all sing the following Benediction hymn (or another suitable song of adoration). Tantum ergo sacramentum, Veneremur cernui. Et antiquum documentum, Novo cedat ritui. Praestet fides supplementum Sensuum defectui. Genitori Genitoque, Laus et jubilatio, Salus, honor, virtus quoque, Sit et benedictio. Procendenti ab utroque, Compar sit laudatio. Amen. Down in adoration falling, Lo! The sacred Host we hail. Lo! O er ancient forms departing, Newer rites of grace prevail. Faith for all defects supplying, Where the feeble senses fail. To the everlasting Father, And the Son who reigns on high, With the Holy Ghost proceeding, Forth from each eternally, Be salvation, honour, blessing, Might and endless majesty. Amen. 8. During the hymn, the priest puts incense in the thurible and incenses the Blessed Sacrament. 9. The priest then leads the following prayer: Priest: You have given them bread from heaven. All: Containing all sweetness within it. Priest: Let us pray. [Collect from Evening Prayer is said.] Or the following may be used without Evening Prayer: O God, who in this wonderful Sacrament have left us a memorial of your Passion, grant us, we pray, so to revere the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood that we may always experience in ourselves the fruits of your redemption. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. 10. The priest receives (puts on) the humeral veil from the altar server, then goes around to the back of the altar facing the people; he genuflects, and then taking the monstrance gives the benediction to the people. As he gives the benediction, the altar server incenses the Blessed Sacrament with the thurible. 17

EXPOSITION & BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT COMBINED WITH EVENING PRAYER 1. The Prayer Leader begins with the following Exposition hymn (or another suitable song of adoration). O salutaris hostia Quae caeli pandis ostium Bella premunt hostilia da robur fer auxilium. Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna gloria. Qui vitam sine termino Nobis donet in patria Amen. O Saving victim, op ning wide the gates of heaven to us below. Our foes press on from every side. Thine aid supply; Thy strength bestow. To Thy great name be endless praise, immortal Godhead, One in Three! O, grant us endless length of days in our true native land with Thee. Amen. 2. During the hymn, the priest (wearing alb and stole) exposes the Blessed Sacrament while everyone else kneels. The priest adds a few beads of incense to the coal, and silently makes the sign of the cross over the incense. 3. At the conclusion of the hymn, all recite the following prayer: We adore You, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ, here and in all Your churches throughout the world and we praise You, because by your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. 4. The celebrant is seated and evening prayer is celebrated up to and including the intercessions, after which everyone is seated. Note: When the liturgy of the hours is celebrated during Eucharistic exposition, the Our Father is omitted, the concluding prayer may be used during Benediction, and the blessing and dismissal are omitted. 5. Silent prayer is observed until the end of the hour. THE WAY OF THE CROSS Preparatory Prayer My Lord Jesus Christ, you have made this journey to die for me with love unutterable, and I have so many times unworthily abandoned you; but now I love you with my whole heart, and because I love you, I repent sincerely for ever having offended you. Pardon me, my God, and permit me to accompany you on this journey. You go to die for love of me; I wish also, my beloved Redeemer, to die for love of you. My Jesus, I will live and die always united to you. The First Station: Jesus is Condemned to Death Consider how Jesus, after having been scourged and crowned with thorns, was unjustly condemned by Pilate to die on the Cross. My adorable Jesus, it was not Pilate, no, it was my sins that condemned you to die. I beseech you, by the merits of this sorrowful journey, to assist my soul in its journey towards eternity. I love you, my beloved Jesus; I repent with my whole heart for having offended you. Never permit me to separate myself from you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Second Station: Jesus Carries His Cross Consider how Jesus, in making this journey with the Cross on His shoulders thought of us, and for us offered to His Father the death He was about to undergo. My most beloved Jesus, I embrace all the tribulations you have destined for me until death. I beseech you, by the merits of the pain you did suffer in carrying your Cross, to give me the necessary help to carry mine with perfect patience and resignation. I love you, Jesus my love; I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to separate myself from you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. 16 9

The Third Station: Jesus Falls the First Time Consider this first fall of Jesus under His Cross. His flesh was torn by the scourges, His head crowned with thorns, and He had lost a great quantity of blood. He was so weakened that he could scarcely walk, and yet he had to carry this great load upon His shoulders. The soldiers struck Him rudely, and thus He fell several times in His journey. My beloved Jesus, it is not the weight of the Cross, but my sins, which have made you suffer so much pain. Ah, by the merits of this first fall, deliver me from the misfortune of falling into mortal sin. I love you, O my Jesus, with my whole heart; I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to separate myself from you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Fourth Station: Jesus Meets His Sorrowful Mother Consider the meeting of the Son and the Mother, which took place on this journey. Jesus and Mary looked at each other, and their looks became as so many arrows to wound those hearts which loved each other so tenderly. My most loving Jesus, by the sorrow you did experience in this meeting, grant me the grace of a truly devoted love for your most holy Mother. And you, my Queen, who was overwhelmed with sorrow, obtain for me by your intercession a continual and tender remembrance of the Passion of your Son. I love you, Jesus my love; I repent of ever having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. PRAYERS FOR MASS Prayer of preparation before Mass St. Thomas Aquinas Almighty eternal God, behold I come to the Sacrament of your Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, as one sick to the physician of life, as one unclean to the fountain of mercy, as one blind to the light of eternal brightness, as one poor and needy to the Lord of heaven and earth. I ask, therefore, for the abundance of your immense generosity, that you may graciously cure my sickness, wash away my defilement, give light to my blindness, enrich my poverty, and clothe my nakedness, so that I may receive the bread of Angels, the King of kings and Lord of lords, with such reverence and humility, such contrition and devotion, such purity and faith, such purpose and intention as are conducive to the salvation of my soul. Grant, I pray, that I may receive not only the Sacrament of the Lord s Body and Blood, but also the reality and power of that Sacrament. O most gentle God, grant that I may so receive the Body of your Only Begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ, which He took from the Virgin Mary, that I may be made worthy to be incorporated into his Mystical Body and to be counted among its members. O most loving Father, grant that I may at last gaze forever upon the unveiled face of your beloved Son, whom I, a wayfarer, propose to receive now veiled under these species: Who lives and reigns with you for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer of thanksgiving after Mass St. Thomas Aquinas I give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, who have been pleased to nourish me, a sinner and you unworthy servant, with the precious Body and Blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ: this through no merits of mine, but due solely to the graciousness of your mercy. And I pray that this Holy Communion may not be for me an offense to be punished, but a saving plea for forgiveness. May it be for me the armour of faith, and the shield of good will. May it cancel my faults, destroy concupiscence and carnal passion, increase charity and patience, humility and obedience and all the virtues, may it be a firm defense against the snares of all my enemies, both visible and invisible, the complete calming of my impulses, both of the flesh and of the spirit, a firm adherence to you, the one true God, and the joyful completion of my life s course. And I beseech you to lead me, a sinner, to that banquet beyond all telling, where with your Son and the Holy Spirit, you are the true light of your Saints, fullness of satisfied desire, eternal gladness, consummate delight and perfect happiness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

death is my hope. Ah, by the merits of your death, give me grace to die, embracing your feet, and burning with love for you. I yield my soul into your hands. I love you with my whole heart; I repent of ever having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Thirteenth Station: Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross Consider how, after the death of our Lord, two of His disciples, Joseph and Nicodemus, took Him down from the Cross, and placed Him in the arms of His afflicted Mother, who received Him with unutterable tenderness, and pressed Him to her bosom. O Mother of sorrow, for the love of this Son, accept me for your servant, and pray to Him for me. And you, my Redeemer, since you have died for me, permit me to love you; for I wish but you, and nothing more. I love you, my Jesus, and I repent of ever having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Fourteenth Station: Jesus is Laid in the Sepulchre Consider how the disciples carried the body of Jesus to bury it, accompanied by His holy Mother, who arranged it in the sepulchre with her own hands. They then closed the tomb, and all withdrew. Oh, my buried Jesus, I kiss the stone that encloses you. But you did rise again the third day. I beseech you, by your resurrection, make me rise glorious with you at the last day, to be always united with you in heaven, to praise you and love you forever. I love you, and I repent of ever having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. 14 The Fifth Station: Simon Helps Jesus to Carry the Cross Consider how the Jews, seeing that at each step Jesus from weakness was on the point of expiring, and fearing that He would die on the way, when they wished Him to die the ignominious death of the Cross, constrained Simon the Cyrenian to carry the Cross behind our Lord. My most sweet Jesus, I will not refuse the Cross, as the Cyrenian did; I accept it; I embrace it. I accept in particular the death you have destined for me; with all the pains that may accompany it; I unite it to your death, I offer it to you. You have died for love of me; I will die for love of you, and to please you. Help me by your grace. I love you, Jesus my love; I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Sixth Station: Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus Consider how the holy woman named Veronica, seeing Jesus so afflicted, and His face bathed in sweat and blood, presented Him with a towel, with which He wiped His adorable face, leaving on it the impression of His holy countenance. My most beloved Jesus, your face was beautiful before, but in this journey it has lost all its beauty, and wounds and blood have disfigured it. Alas, my soul also was once beautiful, when it received your grace in Baptism; but I have disfigured it since by my sins; you alone, my Redeemer, can restore it to its former beauty. Do this by your Passion, O Jesus. I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Seventh Station: Jesus Falls the Second Time Consider the second fall of Jesus under the Cross -- a fall which renews the pain of all the wounds of the head and members of our afflicted Lord. 11

My most gentle Jesus, how many times you have pardoned me, and how many times have I fallen again, and begun again to offend you! Oh, by the merits of this new fall, give me the necessary help to persevere in your grace until death. Grant that in all temptations which assail me I may always commend myself to you. I love you, Jesus my love; I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Eighth Station: The Women of Jerusalem Weep over Jesus Consider how those women wept with compassion at seeing Jesus in such a pitiable state, streaming with blood, as He walked along. But Jesus said to them: Weep not for Me, but for your children. My Jesus, laden with sorrows, I weep for the offences I have committed against you, because of the pains they have deserved, and still more because of the displeasure they have caused you, who have loved me so much. It is your love, more than the fear of hell, which causes me to weep for my sins. My Jesus, I love you more than myself; I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Ninth Station: Jesus Falls the Third Time Consider the third fall of Jesus Christ. His weakness was extreme, and the cruelty of His executioners was excessive, who tried to hasten His steps when He had scarcely strength to move. Ah, my outraged Jesus, by the merits of the weakness you didst suffer in going to Calvary, give me strength sufficient to conquer all human respect, and all my wicked passions, which have led me to despise your friendship. I love you, Jesus my love, with my whole heart; I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. 12 The Tenth Station: Jesus is Stripped of His Garments Consider the violence with which the executioners stripped Jesus. His inner garments adhered to His torn flesh, and they dragged them off so roughly that the skin came with them. Compassionate your Saviour thus cruelly treated, and say to Him: My innocent Jesus, by the merits of the torment you have felt, help me to strip myself of all affection to things of earth, in order that I may place all my love in you, who art so worthy of my love. I love you, O Jesus, with my whole heart; I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Eleventh Station: Jesus is Nailed to the Cross Consider how Jesus, after being thrown on the Cross extended His hands, and offered to His Eternal Father the sacrifice of His death for our salvation. These barbarians fastened Him with nails, and then, raising the Cross, allowed Him to die with anguish on this infamous gibbet. My Jesus! loaded with contempt, nail my heart to your feet, that it may ever remain there, to love you, and never quit you again. I love you more than myself; I repent of having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always; and then do with me what you will. The Twelfth Station: Jesus is Raised upon the Cross, and Dies Consider how your Jesus, after three hours' Agony on the Cross, consumed at length with anguish, abandons Himself to the weight of His body, bows His head, and dies. O my dying Jesus, I kiss devoutly the Cross on which you didst die for love of me. I have merited by my sins to die a miserable death; but your 13
