2 1 Rite of Dedication Rite of Dedication 2 Prelude The Rite of Dedication Celebrating the Eucharist is the central act of the dedication of a church, preceded by a baptism and a chrismation. How does a church building become Catholic? The same way people do, by receiving the sacraments of initiation: baptism, confirmation, and holy communion. Who does the initiating and dedicating? The entire Christian community, the universal priesthood and the ministerial priesthood the assembly, ministers of hospitality, musicians, readers, servers, deacons, priests, and bishop. As the rite tells us, a church is its people, its building is the place where the church meets to worship. 5 7 Rite of Dedication Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. Prayer of Dedication and the Anointings In accordance with the tradition of the Church in both East and West, a special prayer of dedication is said. This prayer is a sign of our intention to give our church over entirely and perpetually to God, for worship and for ministry. The rites of depositing of relics, anointing, incensing, covering and lighting the altar express in visible signs several aspects of the invisible work that the Lord accomplishes through the Church in its celebration of the divine mysteries, especially the eucharist. 6 9 Rite of Dedication Anointing of the Altar and the Walls of the Church The rock was Christ (1 Cor. 10:4) and Christ means Anointed. Just as the patriarch Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head, set it up as a memorial stone, and poured oil on top of it (Genesis 28:18), so the Church pours chrism (pure olive oil infused with rich fragrance and consecrated at the annual Chrism Mass) first on the altar and then on the walls. The walls, anointed in four places, are an allusion to the four walls of the holy city, the New Jerusalem, mentioned in the book of Revelation. The following hymn of praise has been sung by the friars of this province for over one hundred years for special occasions. TE DEUM laudamus: te Dominum confitemur. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free you did not spurn the Virgin s womb. You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God s right hand in glory. We believe that you will come, and be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. V. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance. R. Govern and uphold them, now and always. V. Day by day we bless you. R. We praise your name forever. V. Keep us today, Lord, from all sin. R. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. V. Lord, show us your love and mercy; for we put our trust in you. R. In you, Lord, is our hope: and we shall never hope in vain. Incensation of the Altar and the Church The fragrance acceptable to the Father is that which comes from Christ s Easter sacrifice, as we read in St. Paul: Follow the way of love, even as Christ loved you. He gave himself for us as an offering to God, a gift of pleasing fragrance (Eph. 5:2). The book of Revelation (5:8; 8:3-4) says that incense is also a symbol of prayer that rises to God. In addition to the altar, we incense the assembled faithful, as well as the edifice. This ritual suggests that the temple of God where we are to offer spiritual worship (Romans 12:1) is the individual baptized Christian and, at the same time, the entire assembly. 7 11 Rite of Dedication Rite of Dedication 12 Lighting of the Altar and the Church The altar has been honored with incense. Now other signs follow so that it might efficaciously express its original function as a table of the Lord (1 Cor. 10:21), around which happily sit the sons and daughters who share the table with Christ. The time has come, therefore, to cover the table with a white cloth, to decorate with flowers, to light lights and sing hymns of glory. Christ is the light of the world (John 8:12), a revealing light to the Gentiles (Luke 2:32), the only true light of the church. That light prefigures the last condition of the human race, proper to the heavenly Jerusalem (see rev. 21:10, 22-23). The lighting of the altar and church teaches us that Christ is a light to enlighten the nations, whose brightness shines out in the Church, and through it, upon the whole human family. Liturgy of the Eucharist In front of the holy place was something that looked like a wooden altar, three cubits in height, two cubits long, and two cubits wide. It had corners, and its base and sides were of wood. He said to me, This is the table which is before the Lord. (Ezekiel 41:21b-22) Our mutual love and our concern for those in need will be the criterion by which the authenticity of our Eucharistic celebration is judged. These words by St. John Paul II inspire us to explore the relationship between our celebration of the Eucharist and the call to care for those in need. The celebration of the eucharistic sacrifice achieves the end for which the church was built and the altar erected and now expressed by particularly clear signs.
