2 Welcome to The Riverside Church Interdenominational Interracial International Open Affirming Welcoming Worship is at the center of the life of The Riverside Church. As you prepare yourself for Worship, we invite you to reflect quietly on these words: Jesus comes to Jerusalem, the city nearest you. Kingly, he takes a towel and washes feet. With majesty, he serves bread and wine. With honour, he prays all night. With power, he puts on chains. Jesus, King of all creation, appears in state in the eyes of the prisoner, the AIDS orphan, the crack addict, asking for one cup of cold water, one coat shared with someone who has none, one heart, yours, and a second mile. Jesus comes to Jerusalem, the city nearest you. Can you see him? Carol Penner Healing Prayer is available today. Two of Riverside s ministers will be at the front of the Nave to pray with anyone who desires it. THE LITURGICAL YEAR The Riverside Church follows the liturgical calendar to mark the seasons of our life together. We are currently in the season of Lent, a period of forty days leading to Easter marked by repentance and reflection on everything in our lives that separates us from God. The liturgical color of Lent is purple as signified by the paraments, wall hangings, and clergy stoles (excepting communion Sundays when clergy wear white stoles). 9 About the Front cover Artist: Salvatore Zofrea Zofrea was born in Borgia Italy, on January 1, 1946 and emigrated to Australia in 1956, during the time when Italy was at war. After his emigration and successful settlement in Australia, Zofrea studied at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney, and later privately with Henry V. Justelius. Naturally, having spent so much of his time in Italy at church, he first discovered his talents for art when he would attempt to replicate some of the church s statues using clay he found in nearby fields. He often draws on literary, historical and religious sources to develop intriguing tableaux and has three times been awarded Australia s most prestigious prize for a subject painting, the Sulman - in 1977, 1979 and In 1981 he received the Power Bequest Grant to study in Paris for six months.
