HOLY EUCHARIST RITE I THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Entrance (Congregation Stands) Salutation Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Purity Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Summary of the Law BCP p. 324 Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Gloria BCP p. 324 Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen Collect of the Day BCP p. 131 Celebrant: Celebrant: The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that thy people, illumined by thy Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Lesson 1 Samuel 3:1-10 All are seated Lector: A reading from the First Book of Samuel. Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 139:1-5, Domine, probasti LORD, you have searched me out and known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting-places * and are acquainted with all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, * but you, O LORD, know it altogether. You press upon me behind and before * and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; * it is so high that I cannot attain to it. 2

For you yourself created my inmost parts; * you knit me together in my mother's womb. I will thank you because I am marvelously made; * your works are wonderful, and I know it well. My body was not hidden from you, * while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; * they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. How deep I find your thoughts, O God! * how great is the sum of them! If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; * to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 Lector: A reading from Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians. All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything. Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, The two shall be one flesh. But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

The Gospel John 1:43-51 Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael asked him, Where did you get to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.. The Sermon A brief period of silence The Reverend John Bolin Shellito The Nicene Creed BCP p.358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 4

We were very fortunate to have the Arlingtones Barbershop Chorus sing Christmas carols this year, which brought so much joy to our homeless clients. We had plenty of food, McDonald s Gift Cards, and winter gear for all of the clients as well. We could not have done this without your generous support. Thank you! ~Erin McCabe, coordinator. Bible Breakfast. A small band of St. Georgians and friends meets for breakfast and informal Bible study each Tuesday morning between 7-8 AM at the Ballston Deli, on Fairfax drive one block west of the church. We invite you to join us for conversation, coffee, and usually (but not always) some Bible reading together. Drop-ins are welcome, and you can arrive late and leave early if your schedule demands. There s no homework. We just finished reading the additions to the book of Esther found in the Apocrypha and after a December recess will be selecting new book of the Bible to read starting on January 9. Over the course of twenty plus years (starting with a group of men who met before work near Farragut West), we ve hopped and skipped through most of the Old and New Testaments, some books taking months, others weeks. On the first Tuesday of each month we take a break to read from the Psalms. Our study isn t systematic. We read and reflect together and our discussion sometimes goes off on a tangent as we contemplate the relevance of the Bible reading to our Christian lives in today s society.
