HOLY EUCHARIST RITE I THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Entrance (Congregation Stands) Salutation Celebrant: People: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Purity Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Summary of the Law BCP p. 324 Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Kyrie BCP p. 324 Celebrant: Lord, have mercy upon us. People: Christ, have mercy upon us Celebrant: Lord, have mercy upon us. Collect of the Day BCP p. 159 Celebrant: People: Celebrant: The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Merciful God, who sent thy messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Lesson Isaiah 40:1-11 All are seated Lector: A reading from the Prophet Isaiah. Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. A voice says, Cry out! And I said, What shall I cry? All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, Here is your God! See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 2

He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Lector: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13 BCP p. 708 Benedixisti, Domine You have been gracious to your land, O Lord, * you have restored the good fortune of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquity of your people * and blotted out all their sins. I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, * for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him. Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, * that his glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth have met together; * righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring up from the earth, * and righteousness shall look down from heaven. The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, * and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go before him, * and peace shall be a pathway for his feet. The Second Lesson Lector: A reading from the Second Letter of Peter. 2 Peter 3:8-15a Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 3

Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. Lector: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Gospel Mark 1:1-8 Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Celebrant: People: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. The Sermon A brief period of silence Katherine Ferguson, Deacon Intern The Nicene Creed BCP p.358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the 4

Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People (Form IV) BCP P.388 Deacon or other leader Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. Silence Lord, in your mercy 5

Hear our prayer. Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit, especially ; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. We commend to your mercy all who have died, especially, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Prayers for the Social Order: In Times of Conflict BCP p.824 O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Celebrant adds a concluding collect: Hasten, O Father, the coming of your kingdom; and grant that we your servants, who now live by faith, may with joy behold your Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. Confession Celebrant: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. A brief period of silence. Celebrant and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen. The Peace Celebrant: People: 6 The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit.

Two Ideas to help St. George s and Possibly Reduce Your Taxes As we approach the end of the year, St. George s will be grateful for all donations we receive up until the very end of the year. As you consider your end-of-year giving plans, here are two ideas that can benefit St. George s AND may help reduce the taxes you owe: 1) Charitable giving can potentially be a great way to lower taxes, while also contributing to St. George s. But for your contribution to have a meaningful effect on your taxes, make sure your itemized deductions exceed the standard deduction. For 2017, the standard deduction the amount you can deduct if you decide not to itemize is $6,350 for a single taxpayer, $9,350 for a head of household, and $12,700 for a married couple filing jointly or a surviving spouse. This may mean moving the Capital Campaign donation you had planned to finish up in 2018 into 2017 that would help St. George s pay off our outstanding construction loan and increase your tax deduction for In the current bull market, donating appreciated securities (including stocks and mutual funds) instead of cash, may enable greater tax benefits as well as a larger contribution to St. George s. Contributing appreciated securities you have held for at least a year entitles you to a tax deduction and also helps you eliminate the capital gains tax. Contributing appreciated assets to St. George s is particularly easy through a donor-advised fund (DAF) your brokerage house can help you, or the Diocese of Virginia has DAF s available, too. With a DAF, you can contribute your appreciated securities (or cash), be eligible for a tax deduction for this year for the full fair market value of the appreciated stock, select how the proceeds are invested for potential additional tax-free growth, and use the funds for future grants to St. George s. 2) Take advantage of a qualified charitable distribution If you want to donate to St. George s and you're 70½ or older, you may want to look into a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). It's a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian and payable to a qualified charity, which counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution for the year, up to $100,000. It's not included in your gross income and does not count against the limits on deductions for charitable contributions. These can be significant advantages for certain individuals, but the rules are complex be sure to consult your tax advisor. If you d like more information on either of these topics, please contact Bob Clarke on the Finance Committee. Mark your calendars for Shrine Mont 2018: April 20-22, 2018! Our annual Shrine Mont retreat is a great chance to take a break form your busy life and relax and get to know other members of our Saint George's community. More details on the retreat to come, but be sure and mark the date!! Elena Keydel, Shrine Mont Retreat Chair, keydelena@gmail.com. Do you want to help make our Shrine Mont retreat a success? Want to help advertise for our Shrine Mont retreat? Or manage registration for the retreat? Help plan music, or activities for the weekend? Rather then having 2 or 3 people in charge of the whole retreat, we're seeking "subchairs"-with specific and time limited tasks-to help plan our Shrine Mont parish retreat. Many of these jobs are before the weekend (so you don't have to do anything the weekend of the retreat!) Interested in helping? For details of the various subchair roles, see the Shrine Mont page on the website. Questions? Speak to Elena Keydel, Shrine Mont Retreat Chair, keydelena@gmail.com. 12
