HOLY EUCHARIST RITE I THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Entrance (Congregation Stands) Salutation Book of Common Prayer p. 323 : Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Purity (Said by all) Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Summary of the Law BCP p. 324 : Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Gloria BCP p. 324 Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen Collect of the Day BCP p. 194 : The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. : Let us pray. Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that thou hast prepared for those who unfeignedly love thee; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The First Lesson Revelation 7:9-17 All are seated Lector: A reading from the Revelation to John. After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. "For this reason they are before the throne of God,and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.they will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Lector: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 34:1-10,22 BCP p. 627 Benedicam Dominum I will bless the Lord at all times; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. I will glory in the Lord; * let the humble hear and rejoice. Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; * let us exalt his Name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me * and delivered me out of all my terror. Look upon him and be radiant, * and let not your faces be ashamed. 2

I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me * and saved me from all my troubles. The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, * and he will deliver them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; * happy are they who trust in him! Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, * for those who fear him lack nothing. The young lions lack and suffer hunger, * but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good. The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, * and none will be punished who trust in him. The Second Lesson 1 John 3:1-3 Lector: A reading from the First Letter of John. See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Lector: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

The Gospel Matthew 5:1-12 : The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People: Glory be to thee, O Lord. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." : People: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. This is an opportunity for mature middle schoolers and high schoolers to gather, learn, and reflect, so that each student is prepared to make their own decision about whether or not they are ready to be Confirmed. Tentatively, we are looking at having class on Sunday afternoons-- Nov. 26th, Dec. 3rd, Dec. 10th, and January 7th. Please or speak with Rev. John if you or a student you know might be interested: jshellito@saintgeorgeschurch.org-- Christian Veterans: Called to Serve -- November 12th 9:30-10:15am Forum in the Parish Hall 5:30-7pm 20s and 30s Nontrivial Pursuits in the Rhodes Room On Veteran's Day weekend, this is an invitation to reflect on the history and tradition of Christian Veterans. St. Martin of Tours isn't the only one with an inspiring story to tell-- veterans across history have been a crucial backbone of the church. However, is there a particular calling that the church has to serve those who have served? What are some of the challenges of returning to civilian life after military service? What unique gifts do veterans have to offer to the church and the world? What can all Christians learn from those who have served their country? We hope you can join us. The Rev. John B. Shellito November 16th Families of Faith: Patience, Thursday, November 16 th, 6:30 pm, Rhodes Room. Parents and all those acting in a caregiving role for young ones are invited to join for conversation and reflection in the Rhodes Room from 6:30-7:00pm on Thursday November 16th, the third Thursday of the month. We'll share our hopes, ideas, and difficulties as we seek to pass on the virtue of Patience to the next generation. How can we stay grounded and patient 10

ourselves, and how can we help those in our care, as they learn and begin to embody this virtue? Feel free to talk with Rev. John if you have any questions, and we hope you can join us- Talking to Your Teens about the Tough Stuff, Tuesday, November 28th, 7 to 8:30 p.m. St. Mary s Episcopal Church 2609 North Glebe Rd. Arlington, VA Are you facing life with teenagers or pre-teens and need helping talking to them about the challenges and temptations that come with growing up? Do you need help getting past the eye rolling and awkwardness of starting the conversation? Then come to St. Mary s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, November 28th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Our speaker will be Dr. Heather Tedesco, a McLean-based applied psychologist who works directly with parents in her practice to improve family life and to support long-term development of happy, authentically successful children, teens and adults. Dr. Tedesco will share some local statistics on teen drug and alcohol use as well as teen sexual activity. She will help parents examine what gets in the way when it comes to having these important conversations and will offer practical, concrete strategies for how to facilitate talks with your teens about the tough stuff in their lives. St. Mary s Senior Associate Priest, Mother Amy Slater, will offer guidance on how to lean on your faith in times of family stress. Friends, neighbors and family are welcome! Light snacks and beverages will be offered. Questions? With the Christmas season right around the corner, many of us may already be feeling the stress that the season inevitably brings. Shopping, decorating, baking, and traveling all consume more and more of our time and attention during this time of year. What can get lost is the understanding that this time is also one of the most joyful times of the liturgical year, a time we call Advent. Advent is a time when we are called to realign our focus from the cares of our day-to-day lives to the jubilant anticipation of the birth of Jesus. But what does it mean to live a life with focus on both God and the love of Jesus? Join us during Advent for a series of forums that will provide an overview of the contemplative tradition within Christianity. This three-part series will focus on the biblical precedent for the contemplative life, the monastic life and its evolution over the past 2,000 years of Christianity, and what is being called the New Monastic Movement. Forums will be held December 3, 10, and 17 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Questions?
