2 St. Michael the Archangel Parish www. indlaystmichael.org ADVENT TRADITIONS As we go deeper into Advent, I wonder Do you have any traditions in your family that help you to celebrate Advent more fully? If so, what are they? If you don t have any Advent traditions, have you thought about starting some this year? In my family we always had an Advent Wreath on the kitchen table. The candles would be lit at mealtimes. We also had the tradition of going to midnight Mass. When we returned home from Mass one of the children would place the baby Jesus in the Nativity Scene. Take a guess who did it most years! If you would like some great ideas for some Advent traditions for your family, please go to Once on this site (Catholic Education Resource Center), type in Advent Traditions in the search tool in the upper right hand corner. It will take you to an article entitled Catholic Traditions for Advent and Christmas by Michaelann Martin. Here you can find some great information on such venerable traditions as the Advent Wreath, the empty manger, the Jesse tree, St. Nicholas Day, the Christ Candle, the Mary Candle, St. Lucy Cakes, the Nativity Scene, Christmas baking, and the blessing of the Christmas tree. I really like the ideas on this site for getting the whole family (especially the children) involved in these traditions in some creative ways. I think the tradition that stands out to me in the above list is that of the empty manger. Here is an explanation from the above site about this tradition. Each child may have his own individual manger, or there may be one manger for the whole family. The idea is that when acts of service, sacrifice, or kindness are done in honor of Baby Jesus as a birthday present, the child receives a piece of straw to put into the manger. Then, on Christmas morning, Baby Jesus is placed in the manger. Encourage your children to make Jesus bed as comfortable as possible through their good deeds. In the process, explain Christ s incomparable self-gift at Christmas and Easter that enables us to be part of God s family. Isn t that a sweet tradition? What a pleasant thought that our kindness and goodness give comfort to Baby Jesus. I know our Lord smiles every time we do a kindness for someone out of love for Him. May God be with you and your family during this Advent Season! And may our family traditions help us to grow in faith and love. In Christ, Fr. Mike The 4th Sunday of Advent & Christmas Day This year the Fourth Sunday of Advent falls on December 24. This has raised the question of whether the participation of the faithful in a Mass celebrated on Christmas Eve (prior to 12 midnight) would satisfy both the Sunday and Holy Day Obligations. Bishop Daniel Thomas, after reviewing information provided by the Committee on Divine Worship and undertaking several discussions on this topic, has advised that the two obligations to participate at Mass are not fulfilled by participation at one Christmas Vigil Mass. Rather, the faithful, to fulfill both obligations, are to attend a Mass celebrated for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, and a Mass celebrated for the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord. FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT MASSES Saturday, December 23 Main Church - 4:30pm Sunday, December 24 Downtown Church - 7:30am and 9:00am Main Church - 10:00am CHRISTMAS EVE MASSES Sunday, December 24 Main Church - 4:00pm and 6:30pm Downtown Church - 10:00pm and Midnight Christmas Day Main Church - 10:00am Priests Retirement Update As of December 4, 2017 we have received over $30,000 for the 2017 Diocesan Priests Retirement collection. This is a tremendous support for all the Diocesan Priests and a great help to our parish as your donation reduces the parish diocesan assessment of $82,000. Your generosity is truly inspiring. Thank you for your support! If you would like to contribute to this appeal, but cannot find your pledge form, please put your donation in an envelope and mark it as Priests Retirement. You can drop it in the collection basket or at the parish office. Thank you, Dow Campbell

Parish Bible Studies - Registration forms for our upcoming studies: Ephesians: Discover your Inheritance and David the King are available on our website. We have all heard the phrase Couples Corner unconditional love or to love unconditionally, but have you ever sat back and tried to understand what that means? In Mathew 22:34-40 we recall Jesus replying to the Pharisees that the greatest commandment of all is to love your God, and the second greatest is to love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus goes one step further at the last super and introduces a new commandment, to love one another as I have loved you. Jesus washed the feet of Judas knowing that Judas was going to turn him over shortly thereafter to be persecuted. That is unconditional love! Think about that the next time you have an argument with your spouse or get mad at your children or neighbor. It s okay to have disagreements, but remember that we are to love one another as Jesus loved us, no conditions attached! 5 December 16-24, :00.. A wonderful Mexican Christmas tradi on, las posadas literally translates in English as "the inns" or "the lodgings." The nine-day celebra on lasts from December 16 to Christmas Eve (Noche Buena or "Holy Night"). Please join us as we celebrate Las Posadas this Advent season.
