2 The Crusader August 2016 The Saint of the month Saint Helena Empress ( 328) It is generally believed by ecclesiastical historians of England that St. Helena was born in that country, and according to Leland, she was the daughter of Coel, a British king who lived in friendship with the Romans. Constantius, at that time an officer in the Roman army in Britain, married her. Constantine, his eldest son, received his education under her eyes. In 293, Constantius was associated to the Empire with the title of Caesar, obtaining the government of Gaul and Britain. In return for this honour, he was obliged to divorce St. Helena and marry Theodora, the daughter-inlaw of the Emperor Maximian. St. Helena was not at that time a Christian, but after the accession of her son Constantine and his miraculous victory, she embraced the Christian faith and the most heroic practices of Christian perfection. Her dutiful son proclaimed her empress and struck medals in her honour. In spite of this new dignity she assisted with the people at the Divine Office in modest attire, and employed her wealth in charity to the poor and in the building of churches. When the Emperor determined to erect a church on Mount Calvary, St. Helena, although 80 years of age, undertook to see the work executed, and started for Jerusalem hoping to find the Holy Cross. Excavations were made and three crosses were discovered. The title which lay near one of the crosses and perhaps the marks of the nails by which it had been attached seem to indicate which was the Cross of Our Saviour. St. Helena built two magnificent churches, one on Mount Calvary, the other on Mount Olivet. After traveling through the east, where she beautified the city of the Drepanum in honour of St. Lucian, so that Constantine afterwards gave it the name of Helenopolis, she returned to Rome. Her journey had been marked by the most illustrious deeds of virtue and by innumerable charities. And she died in Rome on August, 328 or 326, in the 20 th year of her sons reign. Constantine caused her obsequies to be performed with the utmost magnificence, and erected a statue to her memory. Saint Helena a Feastday is on August 18

August 2016 The Crusader 3 FROM THE CHAPLAIN Dear Crusaders and Friends, Good news Crusaders! We are about to embark on a Crusade. But aren't we are already on a Crusade, Father? Yes, you are Eucharistic Crusaders and you are in a spiritual war to help Jesus win souls from the power of the devil. However, we are about to start a new attack in the form of a Rosary Crusade. Bishop Bernard Fellay is asking everyone to join him in offering 12 million rosaries to Our Lady from August 15, the feast of the Assumption, until August 22 next year, the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. But the rosary is only half of the Crusade. Bishop Fellay is also asking us to offer 50 million sacrifices over the year. 12 million rosaries; 50 million sacrifices! I can t do that in just one year! No, you don t have to do that by yourself, you and everyone else will add up the rosaries and sacrifices and to- gether we can say 12 million rosaries and we can make 50 million sacrifices. As Eucharistic Crusaders, I trust that you will be among the ones who give the most to this crusade. How many rosaries will we add, how many sacrifices? Remember, Our Lady doesn t really care about quick and careless rosaries and sacrifices. She wants good and attentive rosaries. She wants careful and generous sacrifices. Deus vult! God wills it! It will cost us something, but do not forget that God always rewards us with more than we can ever offer Him. One day, Saint Gertrude had a vision of Our Lord counting gold coins. She summoned the courage to ask him what He was doing, and He answered, "I am counting the Hail Marys that you have said; this is the money with which you purchase heaven." In Christo et Maria, Fr. Campbell

4 The Crusader August 2016 EUCHARISTIC DEVOTION Story of the Blessed Sacrament (Philadelphia, U.S.A 1875) The Reverend Father John P. Dunn who died years ago in Philadelphia, often related the following strange incident of his own experience: It was in the early years of his priesthood that father Dunn was granted the touching proof of the secret workings of the Blessed Sacrament. He was summoned one day to the house of an Episcopalian minister, who was distinguished for his bitter hostilities to everything pertaining to Romanism. Wondering a little at the summons, the good priest instantly went thither, expecting to be taken to the bedside of some faithful servant whose importunity for the rites of the Church had triumphed over the bigotry of her employers. To his amazement, he was shown it once into an elegant chamber, where the minister s only child lay on her deathbed. She was a fair and winning child of nine summers, the idol of the household, intelligent beyond her years. Blessed with perfect health and watched over with tenderest solicitude, she had been fair to blossom into womanhood unmarked by pain or sorrow. Yet the little child had for nearly four years born a secret sorrow which at last had brought her, without disease or accident, to the brink of the grave. There was nothing to grapple with, the doctors said; she was fading away before their eyes with no symptoms of illness, no token of decline only dying. The medical men studied the strange case with interest, friends wondered and wept, the parents grew stern and hardened in their grief. Well they knew what brought this precious little one to this condition. On this day the family physician had caught the first clue for his guidance. It was a bitter exclamation against Popish servant girls which broke from the lips of the mother, as with wild, tearless eyes she gazed upon her fading flower. The doctor demanded an explanation of her words, sternly reminding her that he had a right to know the cause of the child s strange illness. Her reluctance being finally overcome, the mother began by stating that they had once been unhappily persuaded to engage an Irish Catholic girl as the attendant of their little Lena. The girl was far superior to her station, and in fact they treated her almost as one of the family, little thinking they were cherishing a viper. They had strong hopes of her conversion, for she never went to church, had no popish book or emblem of any sort, and was really so indifferent about religion that they were convinced that she had not the slightest recollection of the superstitions of her native country. They had not striven to hasten her conver-

August 2016 The Crusader 5 sion, believing that the attention she gave to their instructions to the child, at which she was generally present, was sowing the seed. One afternoon she took Lena out for her usual walk and, for the first time in years, according to her own statement afterwards, she felt an inclination to go to church. It was a day on which Benediction was given, and from that fatal day dated all their misery. The child was so impressed by the ceremonies that she longed to go again. From the most pious, docile disposition, she became disobedient and stubborn, no longer taking any interest in her prayers or her Bible lessons, and at divine service showing none of her former reference and thoughtful attention. Of course the faithless servant was dismissed without delay and the little victim of her diabolical art surrounded with all good influences. But in vain, the child longed and pined after the popish ceremony, and the terrible infatuation or possession, whichever it might be, was destroying her life. The physician s comment on the story was an instant command that a Catholic priest should be brought to his patient, and he suggested Father Dunn, whom he had often met. Despite the opposition of the mother, the young priest was called in. The child had heard nothing of this. The Protestant doctor imagined the priest would go through some ceremony that would rouse her to animation, and he watched anxiously form the door. To his amazement the child sprang up in bed at the instant the priest entered the room, and with clasped hands and eager gaze awaited his approach. You have brought my Lord! she cried in a voice at once pathetic and exulting. I wouldn t go without Him. Father Dunn s surprise was as great as the doctor s. He tried to soothe and divert her, but she put her little wasted hand on his breast, where the Blessed Sacrament rested, and by her answers to the questions showed that she was as thoroughly familiar as himself with the great Mystery. Gratify her, my dear sir her life is at stake! urged the anxious doctor. The young priest knew better than the aged physician, but he hesitated no longer. The innocent child made her act of contrition and love as he prompted, received her Lord, and with a happy smile sank back into the pillow. As Father Dunn gave the blessing the seraphic soul fled to its Love. Glory be to God on high; and to Thee, oh Jesus, on earth be all honour and adoration in the Blessed Sacrament forevermore! Amen.

12 The Crusader August 2016 The Miraculous Medal Madame Rémond, living in number 70, rue Mouffetard, was holding one of her children, aged twenty-two months, at her chamber window on the second story. Fainting suddenly, she fell back into the room, and the child fell upon the pavement below. Immediate death might naturally have been expected as the inevitable consequence of such a fall; but no, wonderful to relate, the child was not injured. After reading about the Miraculous Medal, the pious parents had hastened to procure one and put in on their child. The Immaculate Mary did not fail to reward their piety. On picking the poor little creature up, and examining it, not even the slightest bruise was discovered. As the mother was a long time recovering from her swoon, it caused great anxiety, and several physicians were called in to see her. They also saw the child, and declared its escape wonderful indeed. But by way of precaution, they applied a few leeches to it, and a poultice to one knee which seemed to be the seat of some light pain. The child had been eating an instant before this terrible fall, which, strange to say, occasioned no vomiting, and immediately after being picked up it took all the little delicacies offered it. Every one declared this occurrence to be a miracle, and the innocent little creature itself seemed to proclaim it, by kissing the medal and pressing it to its lips, especially when the subject was mentioned.

August 2016 The Crusader 13 Liturgy this month The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sundays after Pentecost In the long succession of Sundays after the feast of Pentecost until Advent, 6 months, our Holy Mother the Church teaches us through the parables and miracles of Our Lord the Christian Virtues we must practice. Sunday after Sunday, we will be amazed to know all the things Jesus did for us and how much He wants us to realise that we were created to go to Heaven. It is important to listen to the sermons of the priests at Sunday Mass in order to learn and be encouraged to do good. August 6th: Transfiguration of Our Lord The Transfiguration of Our Lord celebrates the revelation of Christ s divine glory and provides us with a glimpse of The Mysteries of the Rosary - 12 our life in the world to come. August 15th: ASSUMP- TION Our Lady is taken up to Heaven body and soul to be there the Queen of the universe. August 22nd: Immaculate Heart of Mary Let us remember how much Our Lady suffered for our Redemption from the Birth to the Death of Her Son, out of love for us! The Ascension

14 The Crusader August 2016 KINDNESS: the Bloom of CHarity By this rubric giving thoughts on Fraternal Charity, the Crusaders ought to find help in the practice of their motto: Pray Make sacrifices Receive Holy Communion Be an Apostle. Indeed, these four practices are simply four ways of practising the great virtue of Charity, which is the link of perfection. These thoughts can be used, as well, as source of meditation for knights and handmaids. BENIGNITY I n dealing with persons, we must recognise that we are dealing with souls for which Christ died. In the poor, we can hardly choose but see Himself, Who came as a poor man and a servant. On our equals, or those with whom we come in daily contact, we should behold those who require, quite as much as the poor, our compassion, our help and our prayers remembering that what we do unto them, we do to Him. In superiors, we should recognise that authority which is of God, and to which therefore we bow, not with outward respect only, but with interior homage, as to Our Lord Himself. * * * Before all things. Have a consatant mutual charity among yourselves: for charity covereth a multitude of sins. * * * Bear ye one another s burdens, and so you shall fulfil the law of Christ. * * * I Peter 4:8 Galatians 6:2 Let us resolve to be cheerful and amiable at all times and under all circumstances. By keeping this resolution we shall glorify God, and gain much merits for ourselves. Cheerfulness will lighten our daily burden of duty, and render us strong for every struggle. It will be a blessing to ourselves and to all with whom we come in contact.

August 2016 The Crusader 15 HOLY souls corner T he Sacred Heart of Jesus is symbolic of His Sacred Humanity and especially of His great love for mankind. During his agony in the garden His heart was afflicted by his exact knowledge of all of the sins of the world in all of their horror and malice, and of the Passion he faced, which would be necessary to redeem us. In this he was perfectly obedient to the will of His Father which required that He should undergo what was necessary to reverse the sin of Adam. The agony that afflicted Our Lord s Heart, He chose to manifest to His disciples by sweating over his whole body great drops of blood which bedewed the ground in the garden. It is on this that we meditate in the first sorrowful mystery of the Rosary. For such a meditation to bear fruit it is necessary to feel intense gratitude to Our Lord for the spilling of His Blood for our sakes, and which cost Him so much. Too often the Rosary is said rapidly with little thought except that of getting it over as quickly as possible. If this is the case, you might as well not say it. Stop and think deeply for a moment on what you owe to the love of your saviour. The precious blood dominated every aspect of His Passion until ultimately the soldier s lance pierced His Sacred Heart and resulted in the final effusion of His Blood. The Blood of Christ was sufficient to pay for all of the sins committed by Man through all ages. His Blood opened heaven. But the condition attached for our admission to heaven is that we correspond to the Love of Our Lord with our own love for Him. The Holy Souls know this quite well and they are dominated by their love for God, and their willingness to suffer for as long as is necessary to pay the debts remaining from their sins. For them the Blood of Our Lord has been fruitful. If we knew what they now know it is certain that we would amend our lives. Let us not arrive in Purgatory with regrets that we did too little to avoid a very lengthy period in that place of suffering. Let us use the Sacred Blood of Our Lord to ensure this while we have time. Let us respond now to Our Lord s great love for us, so poignantly proved by his Blood being spilt for us, lest, worse still, we miss out on Purgatory and go to the place of complete horror and regret. Grant me the grace henceforth dear Jesus, for the love of Thee, to hate sin; and out of a just esteem of Thee, to despise all worldly vanities (The Jesus Psalter.)
