4 The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two 10:30 am As you enter the nave, you are invited to make your personal offering in preparation for the communal offering that is our worship. Minister and People God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. 4

5 The Absolution A Song of Hosea Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Jack Zimmerman The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6

Look mercifully on this your family, Almighty God, that by your great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore; and the Wisdom of God, the Love of God, and the Grace of God strengthen you to be Christ s hands and heart in this world, in the name of the Holy Trinity. Our next vespers service will be tonight at 7:00 pm. The theme is Prayer. Please join us at the midpoint of your Lenten journey for a short service of quiet beauty sung by the Women of the Redeemer Choir, featuring a new setting of the Lord s Prayer by Ana Hernandez. St. Benedict Work and Pray - March 10 The next St. Benedict work party will be held this coming Saturday, March 10. Join us at 9:00 am for morning prayer, followed by tasks to tidy and improve our church space. We will be continuing work on the bathroom remodel, working in the grounds (weather permitting), and preparing Easter eggs for our annual Easter egg hunt. Other tasks for all mobility levels are always available. We would welcome donations of plastic eggs and candy. Just bring them to the church by Saturday. North Seattle Winter Shelter meals - March 15 and 24 The North Seattle Winter Shelter will be moving to Faith Lutheran in Wedgwood on March 1. Redeemer will be providing meals on Thursday, March 15 and Saturday, March 24. Signups are in the Parish Hall. Details are in the Font Eastside Baby Corner tour - March 15 Members of Helping Hands will be touring Eastside Baby Corner on March 15 at 12:00 noon to present the lovely items we are making for babies and children. Knit, crochet, or sew baby hats, blankets, quilts, bibs, and anything you feel you can contribute to this essential organization. For more information on the work of Eastside Baby Corner, see the notice in the Font. Women s Retreat - March The women of St. John s Episcopal Church in Kirkland invite all women to the Women s Retreat held March at beautiful Camp Houston in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. This Retreat, led by Patricia Wuertzer, will give each one of us a time to let go and let the Spirit fill us with God s peace, calm, and hope. 12 Foot Washing - March 20 The United Way of King County s Annual Community Resource Exchange will be held on Tuesday, March 20 at Century Link Field East Hall. Volunteers are still needed. Donations for Mary s Place and Hopelink As part of our Lenten journey, our parish will be making an additional Lenten in-gathering for Mary s Place and Hopelink. For a specific list of items needed, please see the notice in the Font. Coffee hours in Lent Keeping Lent means changing our routines to be more fully aware of God s presence in our lives. For some people, that means adding a practice. For others, it means giving up a habit that is distracting. This year, Redeemer is going to change how we do coffee hour after the 10:30 service. We are going to give up disposables and use our china cups and plates. Dishwashing help will be welcomed if you are looking for a Lenten practice. You don t need to sign up - just show up in the kitchen around 12:30 pm on Sunday. Lenten Learnings: the Prescient Prophets - Wednesdays during Lent During the season of Lent, we will be meeting for lunch at 1:00 pm on Wednesdays, and looking at the prophets. Soup and simple sandwiches will be available. Donations accepted. March 7: Joel, Micah, Hosea, Amos March 14: Jonah, Habakkuk, Nahum March 21: Zephaniah, Haggai, Malachi Donations for Kenmore Family Place and Mary s Place Kenmore Family Place is in need of feminine hygiene products and queen size sheets. Mary s Place in Kenmore is in need of travel-size toiletries. Donations can be left in the Parish Hall in the appropriately labeled boxes. Fr. Jed away during Easter Season Fr. Jed is having surgery after Easter, and will be recuperating during the season of Easter. The Rev. Catharine Reid will be stepping in while Fr. Jed recovers. Church Directories The first printing of the new Church Directories went fast. Unfortunately, the office repairs will require a delay in printing more. Don t worry! They will come. Don t forget, if any information is incorrect or missing, please let us know so that we can correct the errors/ omissions in the future. 12

18 The Lessons Exodus 20:1-17 (NRSV) Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor s house; you shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 (NRSV) For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. John 2:13-22 (NRSV) The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father s house a marketplace! His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for your house will consume me. The Jews then said to him, What sign can you show us for doing this? Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews then said, This temple has been under construction for fortysix years, and will you raise it up in three days? But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. 18
